NATURAL GRASS
VS SYNTHETIC FIELDS
NATURAL FIELDS VS
SYNTHETIC FIELDS +/- 143,000 ft²
Playing Surface and Drainage System Cost:
Natural cost range is $286,000-$1,144,000 ($2-$8 ft²)

*Some variables for natural playing fields:

Grass type and quality
Clay type and composition (engineered vs native)
Drainage system (existing conditions-engineered sand and pipe system)
Synthetic cost range is $1,114,000-$1,573,000 ($8-$11 ft²)

*Some variables for synthetic playing fields:

Turf type and weight
Infill type (rubber, coated sand, virgin polymers i.e.: TPE and
EPDM, and organic)Shock pad
Cooling agents
NATURAL FIELDS VS
SYNTHETIC FIELDS +/- 143,000 ft²
Maintenance Cost per Year (Not inclusive of Equipment Costs):
Natural cost range is $18,000-$45,000
*Some variables for natural playing fields:
Consumable materials cost (topdressing, clay, field conditioner, herbicide, fertilizer, seed.
Labor (in house/outsourced, rate, and hours spent)
Irrigation costs (water, power, and repair/upkeep)
Striping frequency (batter’s boxes and foul lines)
**As a note, the field will need to be re-sodded periodically based on use and other factors

Synthetic cost range is $3,000-$10,000

*Some variables for synthetic playing fields:
Labor (in house/outsourced, rate, and hours spent)
Usage
Repairs
Infill replacement as needed
**As a note, the synthetic turf will need to be replaced periodically. This will typically happen between
years 10 and 13. The average cost to replace the turf is 60% of the new installation price.
NATURAL FIELDS VS
SYNTHETIC FIELDS +/- 143,000 ft²
Utilization Model:
Natural fields are available to be used no more than 700-800
hours per year.
This is an average for a mid-level competitive field and
accounts for weather, rest, winter season, and other
occurrences

Synthetic fields are available to be used as many hours

as possible based on conditions.
Average usage for a well programmed field is
2800 hours per year
BELMONT REPORT HIGHLIGHTS
Category Findings:
Health Concerns:
“There are abundant peer-reviewed studies concluding that there is no health concern with
the use of crumb rubber.”
“The evidence does not support a finding that the heat concern should be a deterrent…”
“The evidence does not support a finding that the injury concern should be a deterrent…”
Cost Concerns:
“Cost should always be a factor in any decision…but never a factor in any determination
in which health and/or safety of our children is in peril.”
Environmental Concerns:
“The evidence does not support a finding that environmental concerns should be a
deterrent…”
Infill Alternatives to Crumb Rubber:
“Some of the alternative infill materials may be superior to crumb rubber.
Ironically, all of the peer-reviewed scientific studies of crumb rubber provide
overwhelming assurance that there are no health concerns with crumb rubber,
but to elect one of the alternative materials, Belmont would be an “early
adopter” and it is unknown what future studies may reveal.“
