Find the Greatest Common Factor

By Prime Factorization #2
The greatest common factor (GCF) of two numbers is the greatest whole number that divides both
numbers evenly. One way to find the GCF is by finding the prime factorization of each number. This
method is especially useful for finding the GCF of two large numbers.

Let’s try an example. Find the GCF of 40 and 96.

First, find the prime factorization of both numbers.

Then, identify the prime factors that the two
40 96 numbers have in common, and multiply those
shared prime factors to find the GCF.

4 10 8 12 Here, the prime factors that 40 and 96 have

in common are 2, 2, and 2.

2 2 2 5 2 4 3 4 Multiply the shared prime factors to find the

GCF: 2 • 2 • 2 = 8

2 2 2 2 So, the GCF of 40 and 96 is 8!

Note: If there is only one prime factor that the two numbers share, that number is the GCF!

Try it out! Find the greatest common factor by prime factorization for each pair of numbers below.

Practice Finding Mean

The mean is the average of the numbers in a data set. To find the mean of a data set, add all of the
numbers together and then divide by the number of values in the data set.

Try it! Liz wants to buy a car that gets good gas mileage. At the dealership, she notes the miles per
gallon (mpg) for each new car she looks at. Find the mean of this data set:

43 mpg 45 mpg 38 mpg 36 mpg 42 mpg 38 mpg 40 mpg 46 mpg

There are 8 numbers in the data set. Add the numbers together, and then divide by 8.

Convert Between Customary and Metric Units

Just as you can convert measurements within the same system, you can
convert between customary and metric units. The tables below show
the relationships between some common customary and metric units of
measurement. Note that most of these conversion factors are approximate.

Length Weight / Mass Capacity

1 in. = 2.54 cm 1 oz. ≈ 28.35 g 1 qt. ≈ 0.95 L
1 ft. ≈ 0.3 m 1 lb. ≈ 0.45 kg 1 gal. ≈ 3.79 L
1 cm ≈ 0.39 in. 1 g ≈ 0.04 oz. 1 L ≈ 1.06 qt.
1 m ≈ 3.28 ft. 1 kg ≈ 2.2 lb. 1 L ≈ 0.26 gal.

Convert the measurements using the relationships provided in the tables. If needed,
round your answer to the nearest tenth.

1. 8 in. ≈ ______ cm 2. 5 lb. ≈ ______ kg 3. 16 qt. ≈ ______ L

4. 3 m ≈ ______ ft. 5. 4 kg ≈ ______ lb. 6. 20 L ≈ ______ gal.

The range of a data set is the difference between the largest value and
the smallest value. The range tells how spread out the data values are.

Let’s try an example!

Practice Finding Median

The median of a data set is the middle number of the ordered values. To calculate the median of a
data set, order the values from least to greatest. Then, find the middle number.

Try it! In Eli’s math class, his teacher measured and recorded the heights of some students.
60 in. 54 in. 66 in. 57 in. 69 in. 56 in.

First, arrange the numbers from least to greatest. Then, find the middle number.
54, 56, 57, 60, 66, 69

When you have two middle numbers, like you do in this example, you need to find their
average. Add the two middle numbers together and then divide by 2.
57 + 60
= 58.5 Median = 58.5 in.

how you know.

2. Which measure of center, mean or median, will better describe this data? Explain why.

3. Find the measure of center you chose above. Then describe what this measure of center
means in terms of Mariah’s data.

4. Which measure of variability, mean absolute deviation or interquartile range, will better
describe this data? Explain why.
