Definition
What is Dredging?
The excavation of material from the bed of a water body followed by it’s
transport and deposition.

Water body

◼ Sea
◼ Estuary
◼ River
◼ Lake

Transport

◼ Hopper
◼ Pipeline
◼ Barge
◼ Currents

Deposition
◼ Hopper doors (dredger or barge)
◼ Rainbowing / side-casting
◼ Delivery by pipe then settling in reclamation
or re-charge area
◼ Reduced current / gravity
◼ Dry discharge
◼ Mechanical from barge

How big is the Dredging Market?

◼ ~€9 Billion per annum

◼ China is the biggest market ~25% (closed market)

◼ Africa ~10%
◼ Europe ~15%
◼ Middle East ~15%
◼ Latin America ~10%
◼ Asia & Australia ~15%

Contractors

Five recognised major global dredging contractors:

◼ Van Oord
◼ Jan De Nul
◼ Boskalis
◼ DEME
◼ CHEC

Also many smaller more local / regional dredging

contractors including some ports with their own plant

Classification

How is Dredging classified?

In a range of different ways but often as:

◼ Capital dredging
◼ Maintenance dredging
◼ Mineral extraction

Classification
Capital Dredging
◼ Can be thought of as dredging a space which has not been dredged
before (or not dredged for a long time), for the purposes of
constructing something new e.g. a new navigation channel or
deepening a navigation channel.

Classification

Maintenance Dredging
◼ Removal of accumulated sediment from a space previously dredged in
order to keep it clear e.g. removal of accumulated sediment from the bed
of a navigation channel in order to return it to its design depth.

Classification

Mineral extraction
◼ Removal of minerals from the
bed of a water body to use the
materials as a resource e.g. C
O
R
NE
L
IA
extraction of sand and gravel for Material Unwanted
construction, sand winning for moving material
reclamation or coastal defence up pipe Current
and deep sea mining.

Unwanted material Deposition

deposited on the
seabed
