Year 5 Learning and Spelling

Term 1 Week 10
Date: 26th October 2020
LITERACY
Next week, we will listen to and read aloud the freedom poem titled, ‘I Know Why The Caged Bird
Sings’ by Maya Angelou. Next, by referring to the profile of the poet, we will discuss the poem’s
origins, symbolism and meaning. Also, we will read and analyse poems about future careers titled,
‘When I’m Older’ by Lemn Sissay and ‘The You Can Be ABC’ by Roger Stevens. We will continue
to use the thesaurus to find exciting verbs which will be used to plan and write a new poem. Here,
we will use vivid adjectives, alliterations, metaphors and similes to enhance our poems. After that,
we will discuss and explain our understanding in what we have read by working on poetry
comprehension. We are to provide reasoned justifications for our views. As for grammar, we will
identify, create and use metaphors in writings.

faced by the community on an island and identify the reasons for their evacuation. We will plan
and draft our own their own imaginary island for a community to be relocated to. Then, we will
listen to one island song ‘Kawaipunahak’ and share our viewpoints on it. Inspired by the island
song, we will compose our own island song using virtual instruments on our devices. In addition to
all this, we will explore an island, Singapore, and find out how it developed into such a significant
global island over time.
SCIENCE
Next week, we will learn about animal life cycles. We will identify the meaning of a term which

Spelling Lists of the Week
Date: 26rd October 2020
Year Group: 5
Dear Parents/Guardians,

Every Friday, differentiated spelling lists are uploaded onto the Parent Portal. Your child will know
which spelling group he/she belongs to and which words they need to practise and find the
meanings of. Spelling words are given in advance so that they can practise not only how to spell the
words, but how to use the words in their literacy work during the week. There will also be an end of
week spelling test.

Thank you.
