SOLID OF REVOLUTION
A solid of revolution is a solid (volume) obtained by
revolving a region (or area) in a plane about a line.
VOLUME OF SOLIDS OF REVOLUTION
There are three methods for finding the volume bounded by
curves in rectangular coordinates:

Find the volume of the solid obtained formed by rotating 𝑦 = −𝑥 − 2 about the
𝑥 − axis from 𝑥 = 0 to 𝑥 = 2.

Find the volume of the solid formed by revolving the region of the curve of 𝑦 =
27𝑥 3 about the 𝑦 − axis from 𝑦 = 0 to 𝑦 = 4.
Since we are revolving the curve over the 𝑦 − axis,

Determine the volume of the solid formed by rotating the region bounded by
𝑦 = 𝑥 − 3 3 and 𝑦 = 𝑥 + 9 about the 𝑥 − axis.
Equate the two functions,
𝑥−3 2 =𝑥+9
𝑥 2 − 6𝑥 + 9 = 𝑥 + 9
