2. Read the following text to identify the function of the adverbs, they are all in italics.

“Last Saturday Ben went shopping with Grandma Scott. They took the car to the shopping centre.
There was a lot of traffic on the road. That’s why his grandma had to drive slowly. “Have you got
the shopping list, Ben?” Grandma Scott wanted to know. “No, I haven’t.” Ben answered quickly.
“But I told you to take it,” Mrs Scott said angrily. “Sorry Granny, but I forgot all about it,” Ben said.
“Well, then you have to write a list now.” “Now?” Ben asked worriedly, “but you know that I can’t
read or write in the car. It always makes me feel sick”. “Oh Ben, you’re terrible,” his grandmother
said, “then I have to write the list. Where’s my handbag?” “I can’t see it anywhere, Grandma.” Ben
answered helpfully. “Oh no, I left it on the kitchen table”, said Mrs Scott nervously. “What are we
going to do about it?” “I know,” Ben suggested happily. “We drive back and fetch your handbag
and the shopping list.” “Good idea”, his grandma said. She turned right at the next traffic lights and
returned home to Ashton...”

3. Write down the adverbs you found in the text and the verb to which they are related. e.g.

4. Ommit the suffix to get an adjective. e.g slowly slow etc

e. Change these adjectives into adverbs of manner by adding the suffix -ly:

You have to tell them that they also have something more in common. And you lead them to area of word
derivation, they all come from or are derived from adjectives by adding suffix -ly
ADVERBS GAME.

Instructions:

1. Students divide the course into two groups.


2. The teacher has many adverbs of manner that they will have to guess.
3. Teacher gives each group 5 definitions of different adjectives. They will have to guess the
word and to change it into an adverb.
4. Once they have got the word, they are going to write it down on the board to check them
at the end of the activity.
5. The group having the highest number of right answers is the winner.

Data: Each group will have the same definitions.

Definitions:
1. SLOW: moving or proceeding with little or less than usual speed or velocity.
2. HAPPY: the opposite of sad.
3. QUICK: with speed, rapid.
4. ANGRY: feeling or showing anger or strong resentment.
5. HELP: to give or provide what is necessary to accomplish a task or satisfy a need.
