I. TRUE OR FALSE. Write TRUE if the statement is correct and FALSE if incorrect. (50
points)

1. Moment of inertia is directly proportional to mass.

2. Moment of inertia is inversely proportional to the distance of the mass from the axis.
3. An object’s moment of inertia may vary depending on the axis of rotation.
4. Moment of inertia and center of mass are equivalent.
5. Moment of inertia is a scalar quantity.
6. The moment of inertia of a rigid body is constant for any axis of rotation.
7. The SI unit of moment of inertia is kg⋅m2.
8. The sum of the moment of inertia of each particle in a system is equal to the moment of inertia of
the system.
9. No two objects have the same moment of inertia.
10. The shape of a uniform rigid body affects its moment of inertia.
11. Gravity is an attractive force.
12. Gravitational force is directly proportional to the distance between two-point masses.
13. The weight of a person on earth is different on the moon.
14. The gravitational acceleration is weaker at higher altitude
15. Gravitational forces between two bodies are equal in magnitude but have opposite directions.
16. The magnitude of the net charge enclosed in a given region is inversely proportional to the net
electric flux going outward the surface.
17. Electric flux refers to the “rate of the flow of the electric field.”
18. In the electric flux general equation, signifies the angle of orientation of the surface relative to
the lines of force.
19. There is no electric flux present when the electric field is perpendicular to the surface.
20. Electric field lines always emerge from a negative charge and end at a positive charge.
21. When the electric field approaches the surface area at a perpendicular angle, the maximum
number of lines are obstructed by the surface.
22. The larger the surface area, the smaller the electric flux will be.
23. Field lines are considered positive when they are directed into a closed surface.
24. When the electric field E is parallel to the surface area A, the angle between them is considered
to be 180 degrees.
25. A region containing a zero net charge will have no resulting electric flux.

II. ESSAY. Answer the questions briefly (3-5 sentences) and underline your main sentence. (50
points)

1. Is it possible for a point mass to have a zero moment of inertia? Explain.

2. Suppose we have two identical disks A and B. If we drill a large hole through the center of disk A,
which disk has the greater moment of inertia about the axis through the center and perpendicular
to the disk? Explain.
3. Is the moment of inertia of the center of mass of a system of discrete particles the same as the
moment of inertia of the system? Why or why not?
4. Can the gravitational force between two particles with nonzero mass be zero?
5. A ball thrown upward will go back down due to the earth’s gravity. Why is the earth stationary
even though the ball exerts an equal gravitational pull on the earth?
6. Is one newton of cheese on the earth’s surface the same amount as one newton of cheese on the
moon’s surface? Why or why not?
7. Can a stationary body have zero weight? Explain.
8. How will gravity change if the value of the gravitational constant is 1 N⋅m²/kg²?
9. Suppose a region contains two positive and four negative charges. What will be the direction of
the electric flux as it passes through the surface?
10. Sketch a graph of the gravitational acceleration vs. altitude (g vs. h) for an object on Earth.
