Key concept: Related concept(s): Global context: Globalization and sustainability (Human
Change Form, Transformation impact on the environment)

Statement of Inquiry: Science enables us to change the form of matter into useful materials that can
make the world a better place.
ATL: Creative thinking skills: Use brainstorming to generate new ideas and inquiries.
Time Time Date:
assigned: 35 Taken:
minutes

original work and must not be plagiarised (copied from some other source) or peer
plagiarized.
Task 1: Use the following words to write an appropriate scientific response for the command
terms highlighted in the questions: burn, corrosive, explosive, flammable, care, death,
caution, bone, toxic, blistered, ill, attack.
One example has been done for you.
Example:

State what does the above symbol mean.

This symbol means caution.
Outline what do chemicals with this symbol can cause.
Chemicals with this symbol can cause red or blistered skin or rashes.
State what do the following symbols mean. Outline what do chemicals with these symbols
can cause.
Task 2: When conducting experiments, it is important that we operate in a clean and tidy
environment. It is also important to consider the effect of our actions on the environment-
both inside the laboratory and outside. We should consider the way we dispose of waste
materials, especially if we are using chemicals or other ‘special’ materials- remembering
though that in a laboratory, everything we use is scientific apparatus even if it is something
we might consider quite usual at home.
Brainstorm as many ways as possible that a scientific experiment might affect the
environment- both in the laboratory and outside it. You may use the following thinking
routine to help structure an appropriate response.

Discuss what action you take to minimize the impact of each of the environmental impact
factors you have identified.
