MLB - EFL PROGRAM

May - Aug 2023

Teachers assigned: Bryan Pierres, Marbel Castillo

1- Methodology used

For this program we worked with a communicative-based methodology. The main purpose was for the
students to learn English and develop their confidence. We often had them act out role-plays in which
they practiced and developed language functions, as well as a careful use of grammar and
pronunciation focused activities.

We planned communicative grammar lessons where they were given the opportunity to practice the
target grammar through specific communicative tasks and activities (grammar in context). We’d
choose conversation topics that were relevant to the students. The more they could relate to them, the
easier it was to engage them. They learned English vocabulary and expressions through visuals
(flashcards, posters and interactive videos), dynamic exercises, chants, songs, games and group
projects. They worked in pairs and groups most of the time, each activity required negotiation and
cooperation between them.

While planning our lesson, we chose clear context for our activities and language as well as
communicative goals. Each role was meant to be precisely defined, and all participants needed to
know what to do. We made sure to practice both formal and informal interactions to prepare our
students for real-life situations. We personalized tasks and roles according to the student’s language
abilities and provided a supportive and playful atmosphere.

We Kept the teacher talking to a minimum. We explained as much as possible by demonstrating the
process, explaining in different ways (pictures, mimics, examples), and repeating. We Moved on when
the majority of the learners got the idea, and then we circulated and helped as needed.
