Digital Citizenship Lesson Plan

GRADE LEVEL: 6th Grade


COURSE: Technology Education

TOPIC: 9 Elements of Digital Citizenship – Element #9 – Security (Personal Information


Protection)
STANDARDS:
Standard 9 - Identify common methods of securing data (correlates to CTSA standard 2-NI-05
and 2-NI-06)
Standard 11 - Demonstrate positive, safe, legal, and ethical habits when creating and sharing
digital content and identify the consequences of failing to act responsibly
Standard 12 - Discuss the impact of data permanence on digital identity including best practices
to protect personal digital footprint.(correlates with CTSA standard 2-IC-23)
Standard 25- List common methods of system cybersecurity (correlates with CTSA standard
1B-NI-05)
MATERIALS: Chromebook, Schoology, access to Google Slides
HIGHER ORDER THINKING SKILLS: DOK 4 Question: Hypothesize what would happen if people
made unsafe choices when online

OBJECTIVE/SWBAT: identify safe and unsafe practices when interacting with others online
VOCABULARY: Personal Information, Block, Report, Suspicious

BEFORE:

• Students will sign into their chromebook, log onto Schoology, and answer their daily
discussion post (Is it easy to pretend to be someone else online? Have you ever done it to
someone else or has someone done it to you before?)
• Students will have 2-3 minutes to answer their discussion question, then whole class
review

DURING:

• Students will open the Google Slides assignment titled “Internet Safety Scenarios”
located in Schoology
• The teacher will go over slide 1 in detail (directions for the assignment, content to know
before beginning the activity). The teacher will emphasize the importance of protecting
your information online when communicating with others and red flags users often give
when trying to get you to reveal personal information and compromise your safety.

Slide 1

• Students will then go to Slide 2 (Students may buddy up or work alone on slide 2-3)
• The teacher will go over how to work through Slide 2 by reading the slide aloud and
demonstrating #1 (how to highlight and identify the sentence that was a positive action)
• The teacher will then let students do number #2 with their buddy and then review as a class
• The teacher will go over question #3, allow students to raise their hands and answer, and have
them write appropriate responses next to #3

Slide 2

• The teacher will set a 5 minute timer and allow students to work on slide 3 alone or with their
buddy to highlight 4 things Laura did right (#1), 2 things she did wrong (#2), and what she should
have done next (#3)
• The teacher will review the answers aloud with the class via a class discussion after the timer is
up and students look to be done answering the questions

AFTER: Following the activity & review of slide 3, students will complete two exit slip questions
(posted on slide 4 of the Google Slides assignment) to assess what they’ve learned
