1 Introduction

Introduction
The Integrated Digital Interface (IDI) is an intelligent interface for exporting patient studies
taken on a SONOS ultrasound machine. When configured for DICOM, the IDI works with
DICOM standard network servers to automatically transfer patient studies over a Local Area
Network for permanent storage by the server, or for printing acquired images on a remote
printer. The IDI can also work with an EnConcert network using DSR-TIFF protocol. Image
storage and transfer is completely digital. The IDI hardware consists of a processor unit and a
hard drive unit. The IDI shares the SONOS system’s optical drive.
The IDI is easily installed and configured; its software is pre-installed on the IDI hard drive
before shipment. A personal computer (PC) running pcAnywhere® is used to configure and
test the IDI.
The IDI hardware is repaired by replacing either the processor unit or the hard drive. No
internal components can be replaced or repaired in the field, and the IDI cases are sealed to
prevent unauthorized access.
Four methods of troubleshooting are available:
• Network Utility screen on SONOS
• Network connection using a PC and pcAnywhere
• Serial connection using a PC and pcAnywhere
• Connecting a keyboard, monitor, and mouse (KMM) directly to the IDI
Software for the IDI consists of the Windows NT® operating system and the IDI application
program. Software updates use the Symantec Ghost™ disk-image procedure. In most
applications, the IDI software’s revision level must match the SONOS system software’s
revision level. See “Software Compatibility” on page 81.
The RST (Resident Self Test) Registry Backup/Restore utility preserves and restores Customer
IDI configuration and most TCP/IP network settings.
Revision C of the IDI software includes a new set of server options, the Advanced DICOM
(DM) set. The following three server options comprise the set:
• Modality Worklist (MW)
• Storage Commitment (SC)
• Modality Perform Procedure Step (MPPS)

Introduction
IDI Network Icons

IDI Network Icons

When studies are transferred to the network storage server, an icon appears displaying the
transfer status. What icon appears depends on the network settings and the network activity.
The possible icons are shown in the following table.

Icon Network Activity

When storing loops to disk, the icon indicates the percent

progress of the transfer. When several loops are queued, the
percentage indicates the storage progress. If a single frame
is being transferred, the percent complete value is not
99%
displayed.

With Network Autosend on, the icon indicates that the

network was available when SONOS last checked IDI.

With Network Autosend on, the icon indicates that the

network was unavailable when SONOS last checked IDI.

With Network Autosend off, the icon is blank.

Using SONOS Network Utility Help

You can use Help to view additional information about the SONOS commands and their
syntax.
To access Help:
1 In the Network Utility screen, do one of the following:
• Type HELP and press Enter .
This displays a list of the available commands.
or
• Type HELP or H in the command line followed by a command (or first unique letters of a
command), and press ↵ .
This displays the command and the correct syntax for the command.

Introduction
Conventions Used in this Manual

Conventions Used in this Manual

• When referring to text on a computer display or touch screen as a complete name (for a
display feature such as a field or button), this manual uses a screen display font, which is
different from the rest of the text in the manual.
Example:
Click Connection.
• When referring to onscreen text as a part of a display feature name, this manual uses the
same font as the rest of the manual.
Example:
Click the Connection tab.
• When quoting an onscreen text message, the message is between quotes and in the screen
display font.
Example:
“Welcome to the Domain...” appears.
• When an unspecified variable name is part of onscreen text, the variable name is in
parenthesis in the normal font, and the rest is in the screen display font.
Example:
“The domain: (server name) has been added”

• References to keys on the SONOS system or PC keyboard show the name of the key in a
box.
Example:
Press Return .
• The word “press,” as in the above example, refers to keys on a keyboard.
• The words “click” and “select” refer to onscreen controls using the mouse or trackball.
• The word “tap” refers to touch screen controls.

3 Configuration

Overview
Both the IDI and SONOS system must be configured for the customer’s use. All configuration
procedures require information from the Network Installation Worksheet.

IDI configuration
Preparing the IDI for operation involves three tasks:
• Logging on to the IDI from a PC. (page 10)
• Configuring the IDI for network communication. (page 14)
• configuring the IDI for one of two types of output:
• DICOM (page 31)
• EnConcert (page 62)
If a registry backup already exists for the customer, the IDI configuration data can be restored
using the RST Registry backup/restore utility. See “Backing Up the IDI Configuration” on
page 73.
Configuration requires information supplied by the site Network Administrator. This
information must be entered on the Network Installation Worksheet.

NOTE The procedures in this manual cover both Rev B.x and Rev. C, but are primarily directed to
Rev. C. Screen displays for Rev. B.x may differ from those shown in the manual.

Configuring the system using SONOS commands

Each IDI installation requires configuring the ultrasound system and the IDI, using SONOS
system commands entered with the system keyboard. System commands are explained in
Chapter 6, "SONOS System Commands". Configuration also uses information from the
Network Installation Worksheet.

NOTE The NI option must be enabled in the RST Options menu before IDI can be used. For DICOM,
the appropriate options (DP, DS, DM) must also be enabled in the RST Options menu.

NOTE In Rev. C, all SONOS DICOM options must be disabled for IDI to send DSR-TIFF format
images to EnConcert.

Configure the SONOS system for output to:

• EnConcert (see page 60)
or
• DICOM, any or all of the following:
• DICOM Storage (see page 39)

9
Configuration

• Advanced DICOM, which includes the following:

• DICOM SC (see page 45)
• DICOM MWL (see page 48)
• DICOM MPPS (see page 52)
• DICOM Print (see page 55

Logging On to the IDI

To log on to the IDI, it must be connected to input devices and a monitor, either directly, or
through a separate PC.
• Logging on using a separate PC requires a null-modem serial cable, a crossover cable, or a
LAN cable, and the use of the pcAnywhere program.
• Logging on using a keyboard, monitor and mouse directly connected to the IDI does not
require a separate PC or the pcAnywhere program.

Logging on using a keyboard, monitor, and mouse

You can log on to the IDI by connecting a keyboard, a monitor, and a mouse (KMM) to it. This
method does not require pcAnywhere.

Logging on using a separate PC

Connect the IDI and PC
When using a PC to log on to the IDI, the PC and IDI must be connected by a serial cable, a
LAN cable, or a crossover cable.

Preferred method: Connect using a serial cable

1 Connect a 9-pin NULL Modem cable or a File Transfer serial cable to the serial port on the
PC.
2 Connect the other end of the cable to the Serial A port on the IDI (a male 9 pin connector
on the back of the CPU).
IDI’s Serial A port may have a protective gender-changing connector that must be
removed.

Optional method: Connect using a LAN cable

1 Connect a LAN cable to the PC’s network connector.
2 Connect the other end of the cable to an available hub on the customer’s LAN network.
The IDI should already be connected to the LAN network.

4 Software Installation and Upgrade

Overview
This chapter contains procedures for backing up, restoring, and installing software and
configurations. The procedures are:
• Backing Up the IDI Configuration (page 73)
• Restoring the IDI Configuration from a File (page 76)
• Installing or Upgrading the IDI Software (page 81)
• Configuring pcAnywhere V. 9.2 on the IDI (page 83)
• Configuring pcAnywhere V. 10.5 on the IDI (page 86)
• Installing Disk Repair Tools on Rev. B.x (page 91)
• Using the Disk Repair Tools (Rev. B.x) (page 92)
• Initializing the IDI Hard Disk (page 93)

Backing Up the IDI Configuration

The RST Registry Backup/Restore utility stores a backup copy of the IDI configuration on a
disk, and can restore the IDI’s settings to that configuration. (See “Restoring the IDI
Configuration from a File” on page 76.)
To preserve the customer's IDI configuration data:
1 On the SONOS system keyboard, press Test .
The Test menu appears on the system imaging screen.
2 On the menu, select Other Tests & Utilities, then Network Utility.
The Network Utility Summary screen appears.

NOTE You can abbreviate the Registry command keyword to R. The default directory is C:\Registry.

NOTE If an obsolete version of the backup file name already exists, you cannot overwrite that file.
You must first delete the obsolete file before using the name again.
Example: REGISTRY DELETE Mercy_Hospital-12

73
Software Installation and Upgrade
Backing Up the IDI Configuration

3 Send the Registry backup command.

Example: REGISTRY BACKUP Mercy_Hospital-12
Spaces are not allowed in the name.
A message indicates success or failure of the backup operation, and displays the line count
of the backup.
In the example, the file is stored into:
C:\Registry\Mercy_Hospital-12.reg

NOTE Rev. C creates an additional backup file. In the example, it is:

C:\Registry\Mercy_Hospital-12.mit

You can route the backup to another directory by giving a full path name to the desired
location. The forward slash (/) on the SONOS keyboard substitutes for the backslash (\) for
directory paths.
To store the files to the IDI floppy disk drive, enter “REGISTRY BACKUP A:/
(filename)”. To save them to a MOD, enter “REGISTRY BACKUP E:/ (filename)”.
4 Use the Registry preview command to verify the integrity of the backup files.
Example: REGISTRY PREVIEW Mercy_Hospital-12
The line count at the bottom of the preview should match that of the backup. Some of the
configuration settings display on the screen.
Example:
--------------------------------------------------
REGISTRY PREVIEW C:\Registry\Mercy_Hospital-12.reg
Backed-up on: Sun Jan 31 15:58:27 2000
C Name: IDI
AE Title: IDI_MH-12
DICOM Server: MERCY
Domain Name: ML
IDI S/W Version: IDI B.02.00
CurrentVersion: B.2
Service Name: E100B2
Number of lines: 105
The operation completed successfully.
-------------------------------------------------------

NOTE If the backup file was created using an earlier version of the IDI software, a warning message
appears above Number of Lines.

5 Copy the backup files to a floppy or magneto optical disk.

CAUTION In Rev. B.x systems, the 77471A IDI does not have an “A:” drive. Attempting to
access an A: drive on those systems freezes the pcAnywhere connection and
requires a reboot.

74
Software Installation and Upgrade
Backing Up the IDI Configuration

6 Store the registry backup archive media in a safe place.

Use this archive disk if is necessary to reconfigure the IDI. For example, if the IDI C drive
is replaced, you must reconfigure the IDI.
You can store the registry backup to the removable Magneto-Optical Disk (MOD) using the
root directory of the E drive.

Installing or Upgrading the IDI Software

Installing or Upgrading the IDI Software

Software for the IDI consists of the Windows NT® operating system and the IDI application
program. Software updates use the Symantec Ghost™ disk-image procedure. See Table 3 for a
list of software compatibility.

Compatibility
Table 3 describes the compatibility of the various SONOS software revisions with IDI
software revisions. The IDI software revision usually must match the SONOS system software
revision. Make sure the IDI version you install is compatible with the SONOS software.

SONOS System Commands

Enter the SONOS system commands from the SONOS Network Utility Summary screen.
To open the Network Utility Summary screen:
1 Press Test .
2 Select Other Tests & Utilities, and press Enter .
3 Select Network Utility, and press Enter .

Command Syntax
You can abbreviate the command to the length of the shortest unique string. Elements of the
commands are separated by spaces.
The commands are displayed in this section as follows:
COMMAND variables [optional] [choice-of-value-A|or-value-B]

Available Commands
The available commands are listed here in alphabetical order:
ADDSERVER [Label Name Port# AETitle ResponseTimeout]

This command adds a server to the list of available servers. It is used only for DICOM servers.
Add EnConcert servers with the SERVER command. Eight servers can be added on SONOS.
• Label is a unique label for the server, obtained from the Network Installation Worksheet.
The label cannot contain embedded spaces. If the server label is already on the list, the
ADDSERVER command displays an error.
• Name is the network name of the server, and can be an IP address.
• Port# is required for DICOM and is usually 104.
• AETitle is the DICOM Application Entity that provides service. AETitle cannot contain
embedded spaces, is case sensitive, and is limited to 16 characters.
• ResponseTimeout is an optional parameter that specifies the storage command response
timeout value in seconds for this server.
The default value for ResponseTimeout is 1800 (seconds, or 30 minutes).
Example: ADDSERVER MERCY 192.168.10.40 104 MERCY_AE 120
To modify attributes of an existing server definition, you must delete the definition with the
DELSERVER command and add the new definition using the ADDSERVER command. If
you modify the currently selected server, you must set the server with the SERVER
command before the changes take effect.

97
SONOS System Commands
SONOS System Commands

AETITLE [title]

This command sets the DICOM Application Entity Title (AETitle) of this IDI. If the variable
title is omitted, or when “AETitle” appears in the summary screen, the current AETitle is
displayed.
If this command is not entered, the system defaults to “IDI__xxxxxxxx” where xxxxxxxx is the
last 8 characters of the PC name.
Example: AETITLE IDI_IDI_9403
AUTODELETE [OFF |IMMEDIATE|DEFERRED [level [level]]

AUTODELETE disables or enables and configures the Autodelete function. The default
settings are used in typical configurations, and changes are not usually required.
When Autodelete is disabled, the user must manually delete files to manage hard disk free
space.
When it is enabled, Autodelete automatically deletes studies from the IDI hard disk after a
successful network transfer. This is done in either the Immediate or the Deferred mode. Studies
that have not been successfully transferred remain on the IDI hard disk, and are not eligible for
autodeletion.
• Immediate mode deletes studies at the completion of the network transfer.
• Deferred mode deletes studies as required, to maintain a minimum amount of free hard
disk space. The amount of free disk space is defined as being equivalent to a number of
adult cardiac studies, with each study assumed to use 50 MB of space. The AUTODELETE
command sets a Start level and a Stop level, which are values representing free study
spaces. When the number of free study spaces falls to the Start level, enough studies are
deleted to bring the free space number up to the Stop level.
• Start and Stop level values must be between 0 and the number of study spaces equiva-
lent to the total size of the disk.
• When two levels are set, the smaller value is the Start level, and the larger is the Stop
level.
• If only one level is set, it functions as both Start and Stop levels.
• Studies are deleted in chronological order, with the oldest study deleted first.
The AUTODELETE default setting is:
DEFERRED 10 20
This indicates that Autodelete is in Deferred mode, and that the Start level is 10 and the
Stop level is 20.
When the free disk space falls to 500 MB, Autodelete deletes studies until the free space is
greater than 1000 MB, or until all studies are deleted.
Example: AUTODELETE DEFERRED 10 20
BEEPS [ON|OFF]

This command enables or disables the beeps that IDI emits to indicate various conditions of
operation. The default BEEPS setting is ON.

98
SONOS System Commands
SONOS System Commands

COMPRESSION [STILL | LOOP] [JPEG [qq] | RLE | NONE]

This command selects the order in which compression types are offered to the server. If no
parameters are specified, the current compression settings are displayed. More than one
compression setting can be specified. The most desirable compression setting is listed first in
the command string, and the least desirable is listed last. The DICOM standard requires that
uncompressed (NONE) is always presented as an option to the Server. If NONE is specified, it
must be last.
STILL or LOOP, if provided, apply the settings to only that type of image. If both STILL and
LOOP are omitted from the command, the settings apply to both.
If either STILL or LOOP is specified and no compression parameter is specified, the current
compression settings for that server are displayed.
When compression settings are specified, only one is provided. If compression setting of an
image transferred is not supported, the image is reconverted and sent as NONE, and the server
is marked as MISCONFIGURED.
Two compression types can be set with this command: JPEG and RLE.
For JPEG, qq is a value between 50 and 100. 50 represents the lowest quality with greatest
compression, and 100 represents the highest quality with least compression.
The STILL default is:
NONE
The LOOP default is:
JPEG 80
Example: COMPRESSION LOOP JPEG 75
DELSERVER [label]

This command removes a server from the list of available DICOM servers. Deleting the server
that is currently in use has no effect until rebooting or attempting to set the server again using
the SERVER command.
Example: DELSERVER MERCY
FLUSHQUEUE

Flushes the IDI_DICOM job queue. Use FLUSHQUEUE to clear the SONOS Network Status
box.
HELP [command_name]

The HELP command, with no variable, displays a menu indicating what commands are
available. When a command_name is specified, detailed help about that command is displayed.
Example: HELP AUTODELETE

99
SONOS System Commands
SONOS System Commands

INSTITUTION [institution name]

This command is only available in Rev. B.x (Rev. C uses the values defined with SONOS
Setup.) It sets the institution name included in DICOM images. If the institution_name is
omitted, the current institution name is displayed. Embedded spaces are allowed.
Example: INSTITUTION MERCY HOSPITAL

NOTE In Rev. B.x, the institution name must be entered twice:

1. Using the RST Institution command
2. Using the Setup, System and Institution on the SONOS system
Rev. C uses the SONOS System screen to set the institution name.

LISTSERVERS

This command produces an alphabetically ordered list of DICOM servers entered with
ADDSERVER. The command is not supported if NETWORK is set to DSR.
Each server line contains:
ServerLabel ServerHostName PortNum AETitle
The command lists only what fits on the screen, to a maximum of eight servers.
LOG [parameters]

The LOG command sets the logging used on IDI. Logging writes text messages to a file that
can be reviewed and analyzed for troubleshooting. The IDI software logs when and if a
problem occurs in the application. The system truncates to log files when they reach the
parameters set in LOG SIZE, LOG DAYS, or LOG MAX.
DICOM LOG parameters are different from DSR LOG parameters. See “DICOM LOG
parameters” below, and “DSR LOG parameters” on page 102.

DICOM LOG parameters

The available DICOM LOG parameter combinations are:
• LOG SYSTEM [ERROR | AUDIT | INFO | DEBUG]
• LOG DICOM [ON|OFF]
• LOG SIZE <X> (maximum size of dicom001.log in MB)
• LOG DAYS <Y> (number of days to preserve logs)
• LOG MAX <Z> (maximum log file disk storage usage MB)
• LOG (display current log settings)
When LOG is issued without parameters, the default settings are displayed:
System log level: ERROR
DICOM Logging: OFF
Service Logging: OFF
Maximum log file size: 5 MB
Maximum log space usage: 50 MB
Preserve log files for: 8 days

100
SONOS System Commands
SONOS System Commands

There are three types of DICOM logging:

• System log (with logging levels of Error, Audit, Info, and Debug)—runs at all times (See
Table 5 on page 101.)
• DICOM log—can be enabled and disabled (See “DICOM Logging” on page 101.)
• Service log—can be enabled and disabled (See “Service Logging” on page 101.)

DSR LOG parameters

DSR logging is called “Activiyt Logging in the Troubleshooting section and in training. The
available DSR LOG parameter combinations are:
• LOG SYSTEM [ON | OFF]
The DSR default settings are:
System log level: OFF
Service Logging: ON
There are two types of DSR logging:
• System log — can be enabled and disabled (See Table 5 on page 101.)
• Service log— runs at all times (See “Service Logging” on page 101.)
MISCELLANEOUS [ACCESSION | NONE]

(For Rev. B.x only; Rev C uses the accession number from SONOS Setup.)
This command allows you to map the MISC. field in the Patient ID screen to an accession
number attribute in DICOM images.
MONOCHROME [OFF | BW | ALL]

MONOCHROME is used with DICOM Storage, and controls how monochrome is applied to
images sent to the DICOM Storage server.
• If OFF (default) is selected, monochrome output is not used.
• BW applies monochrome only to black-and-white images.
• ALL applies monochrome to all sent images.
Example: MONOCHROME OFF

REGISTRY BACKUP|DELETE|LIST|PREVIEW|RESTORE [drive:][path][filename[.reg]]

The REGISTRY command backs up the IDI and network configuration to two files, and
restores the configurations from those files. The functions BACKUP, DELETE, LIST, and
PREVIEW are described below.
The default directory path is C:\Registry. You can also use the optical drive (E).
Example: REGISTRY BACKUP C:\REGISTRY\MERCY.REG

NOTE The SONOS keyboard does not have a backslash (\) key. Use the forward slash (/) key instead
for filename paths. Only files having a .reg or .mit suffix can be handled by the Registry utility.
If the suffix is not explicitly entered, the software appends the ".reg" suffix to the file name.
The path names and file names are similar to UNC file names, but embedded spaces are not
allowed.

• REGISTRY BACKUP [drive:][path]filename[.reg]

Reads the IDI and network configuration from the Windows/NT registry and SQL databases
and stores the data to two files. The syntax of the stored files is the same as that produced by
the REGEDIT.EXE Windows NT operating system.
Example: REGISTRY BACKUP C:\REGISTRY\MERCY
• REGISTRY DELETE [drive:][path]filename[.reg]
Removes one backup file from the drive. Wildcards are not allowed.
Example: REGISTRY DELETE C:\REGISTRY\MERCY
• REGISTRY LIST [[drive:][path]]
Lists all files with a .reg or .mit suffix on a given drive or path. The display screen size limits
the number of files displayed. A line count at the bottom of the screen indicates the total
number of files in the list. If more files are listed than fit the display, then “...etc.” is displayed
at the bottom. If the REGISTRY LIST command is used without parameters, the default lists
C:\Registry.
Example: REGISTRY LIST C:\REGISTRY
• REGISTRY PREVIEW [drive:][path]filename[.reg]
Displays the summary contents of a previously stored backup file, but does not alter the
registry database. This command can be used to verify that the correct backup file is used.
Example: REGISTRY PREVIEW C:\REGISTRY\MERCY.REG
• REGISTRY RESTORE [drive:][path]filename[.reg]
Reads a backup file and merges the information into the Windows/NT registry and SQL
databases. No registry values are deleted, but existing ones are overwritten. Unwanted DICOM
servers should be deleted using the DELSERVER command.
Example: REGISTRY RESTORE C:\REGISTRY MERCY.REG

NOTE Security encryption prevents automatically restoring the Workgroup or Domain names. You
must manually restore these names.

SONOS System Commands
SONOS System Commands

SCSERVER [serverlabel | NONE]

Sets the server for the Storage Commitment function.

SERVER [serverlabel |NONE]

NOTE DSR uses a host name instead of a server label.

This command selects a storage server, which is required for IDI DICOM storage. The selected
server is the target for receiving studies from IDI. This information is passed from the SONOS
system to the IDI.
When the SERVER command is invoked, it may take several minutes for the server to respond.
If a study is being transferred when the SERVER is changed, the change takes effect at the next
study. Meanwhile, the system indicates that the server change is pending. To force the change
to occur immediately, restart the system.
If the parameter is set to NONE, no storage server is selected. Use this setting if there is a
DICOM printer configured but no DICOM storage server. This command gives an indication
of the status of the new connection after waiting a few seconds.
When Server is shown in the Summary screen, the server label and the status of the connection
to the server are displayed. The status is AVAILABLE if the server has responded;
UNAVAILABLE if it has not. AVAILABLE status does not mean that the server is ready to
accept studies or images.

NOTE To change the server when using DSR, the queue must be empty.

The default is the display of the current server status.

Example: SERVER ACM
SQUAREPIXELS [ON|OFF]

Converts the SONOS rectangular pixels to square pixels for the DICOM Storage server.
The default is OFF, which exports data without interpretation.

107
SONOS System Commands
SONOS System Commands

STUDYSTATUS [n]

Displays the status of DICOM studies transferred for a particular date. n (0-7) specifies the
number of days before today. The default is zero, which equals today.
Example: Summary screen:

STUDIES PERFORMED ON 20020302 TOTAL 3

Study # Sta MRN Name Time

======= === ======= ======== ======

1 + ID0001 patient1 144439

2 - ID0002 patient2 150530

3 ID0003 patient3 160243

where, in the Sta (status) column:

• A plus sign (+) indicates all DICOM services successfully completed.
• A minus sign (-) indicates at least one DICOM service failed.
• Nothing indicates at least one DICOM service has not yet completed.
To display more detail about a specific study, type SELECT [study number from list].
To display additional studies for the last day requested, type NEXT.
SUMMARY

This command displays information about the IDI. The information displayed depends on
whether the network protocol is set to DICOM (see “DICOM summary information” below) or
