OBJECTIVES Differentiate verbal from non-verbal communication


Identify the varied types of non-verbal communication
Demonstrate their understanding by using proper verbal and non-verbal cues in a
short skit.
CONCEPTS VERBAL COMMUNICATION- means sharing things by means of words, whether
spoken or written.
Types of Verbal
a) intrapersonal communication
b) Interpersonal communication
c) face to face conversation
d) written communication
NONVERBAL COMMUNICATION- is communication without words, only visual
cues.
Types of Non-Verbal
a) Facial expressions- The principal source of feedback.
b) Eye contact -The most expressive element in face-to-face communication.
c) Body movements & posture- The way you stand and hold your body also
sends messages.
d) Gestures- The movement that you make with a part of your body, especially
your hands.
e) Haptics- also known as “touching”.
f) Proxemics - refers to the amount of space that individuals naturally
maintain between each other which communicates meanings.
g) Chronemics - it deals with the issues of time in communication.
h) colors – it is a form of non-verbal communication. It has the ability to awaken
thoughts of memories, stimulate the senses and represent abstract ideas.
i) Paralanguage – it refers to various acoustic properties of speech such as
tone, pitch and accent, collectively known as prosody, can all give
off nonverbal cues.
QUESTIONS/ACTIVITY Let’s Play a Game (CHARADES)
The teacher will start the discussion through introducing a game called
Charades. The class will be divided into two (2) groups.
The teacher will provide pieces of paper and all of them contain titles of a
movie
The representative of each group will pick a piece of paper and he/she will
act whatever he/she picked.
The other members of the group will guess the act.
Each correct answer is equivalent to1 point. The group who will have the
highest number of scores will be the winner.

Guide Questions
The teacher will inform the class that the activity that they do a while ago is an
example of verbal and non-verbal communication and she will now start asking
the following questions:
1. What is Verbal communication?
2. How about the Non-verbal communication?
3. What are the situations where we use to apply verbal communication?
4. How about in non-verbal, what are the examples of it?
5. What are the benefits of using verbal and non-verbal communication?
(the answers of the students may vary based on their opinion)
ASSESSMENT/ INDIVIDUAL ACTIVITY (Quiz)
APPLICATION Direction: Identify the words being described in each of the following sentences.
Write your answers on the space provided.
NON-VERBAL 1. This type of communication is wordless.
VERBAL 2. This type of communication can be oral or written.

as what is said.

especially your hands.
HAPTICS 9. This includes a weak handshake, a timid tap on the
shoulder or a warm bear hug.
CHRONEMICS 10. It deals with the issues of time in communication.

NEXT ACTIVITY
The class will be divided into four groups. Each group will be required to
have a short scenario to be performed in front. Of course, before coming
up with the performance, there must be a script. The script should contain
verbal and nonverbal cues. For
example: “Girl: Hi! (waving)”
It is up to the group leaders how they will divide the tasks. As long as all
of the members will participate, a script will be produced, and a short role
play will be performed. The rubrics will be given by the teacher.
