General Observations

a. Production Process / Description

Nutribaked Foods Inc. - A maker of freshly-made bread, Gardenia in

Cebu relies on automated process way of baking producing 2000 loaves of
bread per hour, that’s why it is called 2k plant as what the Gardenia tour
guide told us. The mixing process is done without any human contact. It is
then delivered to the oven for automated baking, but this time, it was
delivered with human interaction. It is then conveyed to its destination for
slicing, packaging and sealing. The sealing used assigns a particular color
to a certain day’s production, allowing consumers to easily know the
bread’s freshness. After that, the finished product is then delivered for
selling.

Profood International Corp. – A producer of dried fruits and juices such

as mango, pineapple, guava etc., Profoods boasts on clean and efficient
way of producing their products. They buy lots of fruits from all over the
country which makes the production continuous even when the season
changes. The mangoes are then sliced to its desired shape manually
which according to the plant tour guide is in a minimum of eight mangoes
per minute. Their salary is dependent on how many mangoes they can
slice. The mangoes are then stored in an open tank. The tour guide then
directed us to the production of mango nectar. She showed us the
conveying process of the already canned mango juices. While conveying,
a worker is inspecting if there are glitches in production and rejects
products that are not desirable. We are then guided to the final steps of
production which is the packaging of the finished product. The inspection
of the mangoes this time is automated and those that are blackish in color
are sent back to be refined again manually.

Wellmade Motors - A large machine shop which offers services in

maintenance and fabrication of machine components. They rely on its
human and capital resources. Their machines ranges from small to big
lathe machines, vertical or horizontal or the combination of both. They
have milling machines which makes large gears. Basically, what they do is
fix or make machine components.

Cemex - A cement manufacturer that boasts on safe and efficient

production of cement. The process starts with quarrying wherein they
collect and extract raw materials for the production. The collected
materials are then sent for crushing then drying. It is then delivered for raw
milling and is then sent to the kiln for burning. The burned elements are
then cooled and then later packed, ready for delivery.

Talisay Ice Plant – a producer of ice in large quantity and in large size
that uses ammonia as the working fluid. Low pressure and low
temperature ammonia coming out from the throttle valve is vaporized by
taking the latent heat from the brine. The brine gets cooled which is
circulated in the brine circuit to freeze the water and forming ice from
water. This cooled brine further absorbs the heat from the water and
converts water to ice. Vaporized ammonia is condensed by water
circulated in cooling water circuit having a cooling tower. The condenser
then condenses the ammonia by water coming from cooling tower.

b. Company Policies / Practices

Nutribaked Foods Inc. – Upon plant visit, the company was strict on the
dress code. Short pants were not allowed, and hairnets were mandatory.
The company also let us watch the process practiced in Laguna Branch
first before going to the production area. The group did not have a close
encounter with the machines and the process was only seen from the
above floor.

Profoods International Corp. – Before entering the company, we were

asked to give an amount of 100 php to have the privilege to tour around
the company’s premises. Proper attire was also observed. No slippers and
no short pants allowed. The group is mandated to have a tour guide and is
not free to roam around the premises that is not part of the tour plan.
Wellmade Motors – The group was first introduced to the company by
letting us watch a video about its company profile. In the video, they
emphasized that they accept PWD workers. After the introduction, we
were brought to their machine shop. It was also observed that there was
no security guard. The company explained that even with security
personnel, theft is still present. They opt for no security guard because
there are also people staying inside the compound.

Cemex – The strictest company the group visited. Complete Personal

Protective Equipment (PPE) was required. Those who are not wearing
their PPE are not allowed to enter the production area. They are only
allowed inside the control room. The group did not have any PPE so the
process on how to produce cement was explained inside the control room.

Talisay Ice Plant – The group was divided into two groups. The first group
started on the first stage of the production. The second group started on
the later part of the production --- where ice is already formed. Then, the
second group proceeded to the first stage and the first group then
progressed to the last stage of production of ice.

All those aforementioned company, the common policy they had was the
“No Taking Pictures”.

c. Positive / Negative Impressions

Nutribaked Foods Inc. – On actual, the company’s production zone was

rather simple and hot. I cannot imagine how the workers can stand the
heat of the area. But, I was gladly impressed of their G-lock system, where
you would know how fresh the product is by simply looking at its lock color.

Profoods International Corp. – I was somewhat dissatisfied that we did

not see any other variety of their products. The group only witnessed a
rather small portion of their production process. On contrast with the
Nutribaked Foods Inc., the company was large. And their theatre as well
as their documentary video was impressive and informative.

Wellmade Motors – At first glance, the company seemed to be

unorganized and untidy. But when the tour began, I observed that the
company had so much to offer especially in terms of their services.

Cemex – I have to say it was the largest industry we have visited. There
were plenty things to be seen and to be toured around, sadly, as what I
have mentioned earlier, we only got to experience their control room. But
to be fair, we have visited their diesel power plant and it was still very
informative. It was also noted that there was no recorded accident inside
the company for a long time already. I can also say that they are very
careful and very responsible with their jobs.

Talisay Ice Plant – It was a welcoming and accommodating plant. I can

say that the owner of the company was very wise and resourceful. He was
also generous with his knowledge. He first handedly toured us around his
company.

C. Overall Plant Tour Assessment

a. Positive Points

Overall, it was an upgrade to my student experience. It was my first

time seeing different productive companies. I saw a glimpse of what I
will be doing for the next years. It was nice that I can interact with the
engineers and production head personally, and I can say that it was
pleasant to talk and to ask them freely. The tour was informative and
useful for my future career ahead.

b. Unmet Expectations

Desolately, it was not really the tour I was imagining myself with. It was
good, but it could be better. I was not able to see the whole and raw
process of each company. For me, it was like a sugar-coated truth. But
I think I will only be able to see the raw process when I get the chance
to work with them in the next years. And though those companies were
not the planned areas to be visited, it still turned out fine in the end.

c. Recommendations / Suggestions

Choose wisely your travel agency: the agency who would want you to
experience your dream plant tour, not just visit the companies which
are favorable to them. Also, for Cemex and for all concerned compnies,
they could have had spare PPEs for us to use because it is not
economical and inconvenient to bring PPEs from Iligan City to Cebu
City.
