Introducing internship courses and the facilities

On the first day, our instructor (Mr. Nguyen Phat Tai) introduced us some basic
safety principle as well as the four sections in our program, what we will learn and what
we can achieve after finishing the course.
Industrial safety
The importance of industrial safety is the ‘’first thing first’’. Before using
machinery or other equipment, every employee must get training in order to prevent
mishaps for both ourselves and our coworkers. Every employee must adopt a "safety
first" mentality when they join the job; this is a crucial need.
The objectives of industrial safety:
 Examine all the possible chances of accidents for preventing loss or disability of
man, damage to machine and material, and other infrastructure facilities available.
 Eliminate work efficiency decline.
 Reduce hazards to a minimum.
 Increase production and living standards.
Causes of accidents:
 Human Causes: Working on unsafe or dangerous, moving equipment,
machinery, or improper tools. Operating machines without knowledge, without authority,
without safety precautions. Working with unwell mental or physical health like would
likely to case troubles.
 Environmental Causes: Poor working area, improper temperature or illumination,
and bad plant layout may cause accidents.
 Mechanical Causes: Old, poorly maintained, or unsafe equipment or building
structure may lead to accidents. Lack of safety devices sand such as helmet and
goggles, also is the problem.
Safety regulations
 Dress in appropriate protection gear.
 When using the equipment, take caution and exercise responsibility.
 Carefully read the workshop rules and always abide by them to prevent mishaps
that might harm you or others around you.
 Never use the equipment without the instructors' knowledge and approval.
 Be familiar with first aid procedures for emergencies.
 Before doing maintenance or cleaning, turn off the machinery.
 Pay attention to where the emergence buttons, fire extinguisher, and escape are
located on the devices.
 Take off your bracelets, rings, and other jewelry. Make a tidy hair tie.
 Only one person using the machine at once.
 Never clean with pressurized air.
 Keep the shop neat and orderly.

3
Internship report

 If you're fatigued, stressed out, or experiencing any health issues, stop using the
machine, ask for help, and take a break.
Measurement tools and techniques
There are many kinds of tools that have been introduced to us, such as Vernier,
Micrometer, Ruler, and etc.
Using the Vernier caliper:
1. Turn the locking screw counterclockwise if it’s locked
2. Close and clamp the jaws around the outside of the object for external
measurement.
Or extend the jaws inside of the object to get an internal measurement.
Push the extension rod into the object for depth measurement.
3. Record the measurement going from the largest to the smallest number.
Lathe machine
A lathe machine is a machine tool that rotates a work piece about an axis to cut,
sand, knurl, and etc. to create an object with symmetry about that axis. It can operate in
low or high speed depending on your work.
Milling machine
A milling machine is a machine tool that removes metal as the work is fed against
a rotating cutter. The milling cutter rotates at high or low speed and it removes metal at
a very fast rate with the help of multiple cutting edges. A milling machine is used for
machining flat surfaces, contoured surfaces, surfaces of revolution, etc.
CNC machine (Computer Numerically Controlled machine)
CNC machine is an automated control of machining tools by a computer. We
program the computer with code so that it can operate directly without manual
controlling. Human instruction includes two parts, CAD- designing and CAM-
manufacturing. There is a part where manual work is necessary- when placing the
‘billet’ for reference location.

Weekly report
Introduction
In the next two weeks, group 1 counting me worked with the Lathe section, this takes
place in the MEN laboratory, where I tried to master the lathe machine (week 1, 2) and
milling machine (week 3, 4).
For the week from 16.04.2022 till 10.05.2022

Introducing Lathe knife and assembly

In the theory section last week, I have been introduced to the Lathe knife, now
that I have a chance to see it in reality and its component and how to assemble it.
Safety rules
During the lab time, there are some additional safety rules that we must obey:
 Remember the locations of emergency buttons and hitting them when
something’s gone wrong
 Tighten everything but not overtighten, remember to remove the Lathe key and
other keys before turning on the machine.
 Only one person operates a machine at a time, others must not interfere.
Getting used to the machine
First activity, we run the machine without a billet, and we practice what we’ve
learnt, getting used to the levers, the buttons. Also, we practice working with a team. It’s
a new experience for me.

Calculate the cutting speed based on the following equation:

Where: D: Diameter of the work piece (mm)
n: Main Axis Spindle Speed
C: Cutting speed (depend on the lathe tool that we
use; in our case, C ≈ 35-45 m/min)

Exercise 1

 Step 1: Attach the piece to the chuck, make sure the billet is held right and the
spare is long enough to work with.
 Step 2: Set cutting speed at 400 RPM, feet rate 0.02-1 mm
 Step 3: Facing.
 Step 4: Determine the origin of Ox and Oy.
 Step 5: Start straight turning the first part till Ø20x80 mm.
The step can go from 0.2 to 2 mm depend on if this is rough turning or finish
turning. Mostly we will go with 0.5mm.
 Step 6: Chamfer the head.
 Step 7: Turn over the work piece.
 Step 8: Set the origin again and start straight turning, facing, shoulder turn, and
chamfer.
 Step 9: Check the dimensions and finish.

8
Internship report

=> In this excise, I have learned how to do basics like straight turning, facing, shoulder
turn and chamfer. Since it’s the first exercise so it takes quite some time to finish.
Exercise 2
In this exercise, we perform the same procedure as Exercise 1 but we add a few more
steps.

Knife changing, face milling

First, we secure the work piece tight since we don’t want it to fly around. Then we set
Ox and Oy axis:

Setting up origins for Ox & Oy axis

For x-axis:

1. Cut the billet shallowly on x-axis, about 2/3 the area of the knife

2. Set x on the screen to 0

3. Run the knife to smooth out the whole surface

For y-axis:

1. Cut small chip on y-axis, about 2/3 the area of the knife

13
Internship report

2. Run the knife to smooth the whole surface

3. Set y on the screen to 0

For z-axis

1. Lower the knife to any position of upper surface (preferably on the edge since it will
cut away)

2. Keep lowering slowly until see metal chips flying

3. Set x on screen to 0
