prejudice for or against a person, object, or idea. Much of what you
read and hear expresses a bias.

Three types of bias can be distinguished:

1. Information bias- is any systematic difference from the truth that
arises in the collection, recall, recording and handling of
information in a study, including how missing data is dealt with.
 Examples: Incomplete medical records. Recording errors in
records. Misinterpretation of records.

2. Selection bias- is the bias introduced by the selection of

individuals, groups or data for analysis in such a way that proper
randomization is not achieved, thereby ensuring that the sample
obtained is not representative of the population intended to be
analyzed.
 Examples: you want to study the effects of working nights on
the incidence of a certain health problem. ... So your finding
may not be related to night work at all, but a reflection of the
influence of socioeconomic status. Selection bias also occurs
when people volunteer for a study.
3. Confounding- A systematic distortion in the measure of
association between exposure and the health outcome caused by
mixing the effect of the exposure of primary interest with
extraneous risk factors.
 Examples: if all of the women in the study were middle-aged,
and all of the men were aged 16, age would have a direct
effect on weight gain. That makes age a confounding variable.
