Tenses

Past Simple
 A finished event or action in the past (specific time)

Subject + verb ED

Present Perfect simple


 The P.P.S is used to describe an action or situation that started in the past and continuous in the
present
 Something which happened at unspecific time in the past (we don´t say when)
 Past events whit present consequences

Subject + have/has + PP

Present Perfect Continuous


 A repetitive recent action/event
 A temporary recent activity

Subject + Has/ have been + ING

Past continuous
 We use P.C to describe the background events in a narrative
 We also use to describe an action that was in progress when a completed action happened
 We often use ´when´ and ´while´ to connect past events

Subject + was/were + verb ING

Past Perfect
 We use the P.P to describe an action than happened before another action in the past

Subject + had + verb PP

Present simple

 Things that always or usually happen


- I live in the city center
- she doesn´t smoke
 Routines
- he gets up at 9.00 am every day

Subject + do/does + verb

Present continuous
 Things that happening now or around now
- he´s looking for a new job

 Things that we have arranged for the future. We usually specify when or where the event will take
place
- I´m meeting Sarah at the cinema at 8.30 pm

 We usually use the present continuous to ask people about their plans
- Are you doing anything tomorrow afternoon?

Subject + to be + verb ING

Be Going To

 We use ´be going to´ to talk about future plans and intentions
- I´m going to phone my mother tonight.
- when are you going to buy a new car?

The ´present continuous´ an ´be going to´ have a similar meaning, but the present continuous emphasizes
that you have made the arrangements and be going to emphasizes that you have made a decision

- we´re going to New York next summer! = we´ve bought our tickets. It´s organized (P.C)

- we´re going to go New York next summer! = we´ve made the decision, but we might not have the tickets yet. It
might not be organized (be going to)

Subject + to be + going to + verb INF


Tenses

Will

 we use will when we make an offer, promise or instant decision


- we´ll take you to the airport, if you like
- I will do the washing up before I go out, I promise!
- it´s really hot here. I´ll open the window

Subject + will/won´t + verb INF

Shall

 We use shall as a question with/or we to make offers and suggestions


- shall I take you to the airport?
- shall we go to that new restaurant by the beach?

Shall + subject + verb INF
