Urbanization and Industrialization has made waste management difficult, directly

affecting the environment and health of the society. Smart Dust-Bin is an attempt to
Problem Statement:  make waste monitoring convenient and waste management easier. Aim of this
project is to build a Smart Waste Management System focusing on real time
monitoring and detection of garbage level and moisture.

1) To design a solution to meet desired features using Raspberry Pi and Arduino

2) To create a schematic for the project and list the components needed
3) To implement final hardware on Raspberry-Pi and Arduino based systems.
OBJECTIVES:  4) To ensure seamless hardware-software interaction using component based
online applications.
5) To improve reliability of hardware by fault finding .
6) To successfully demonstrate the working of Smart Dust-Bin
In order to create a working prototype of Smart Dust-Bin, group members A,B,C
and D intend to divide into 2 groups:
1) A,B - Raspberry-Pi Implementation
2) C,D - Arduino Implementation
Each group will have tasks as follows:
SPECIFIC:   1) Identification and Finalizing of components: A,B,C,D
2) Procuring required components; A, C
3) Configuration of Raspberry-Pi with other sensors: A,B
4) Implementing final design on Arduino: C,D
5) Integrating the project with Online applications: B, D
6) Fault-Finding and Correction: A,B,C,D
Testing and continuous improvements will be made to the design as we work on the
hardware and at the end of our project we will put together a working Smart
MEASURABLE:
Dust-Bin to measure garbage level and moisture along with a software application to
track the data.
We have watched basic online videos on features of Raspberry and Arduino. The
plan is to procure the required hardware and take some more courses trying out
ACHIEVABLE:
programs on actual hardware. Based on current progress we are confident to achieve
the desired goal.
This Prototype will help build a concept device to integrate hardware resources with
software which will improve sanitation for a step closer to building a Smart City. In
the longer run, Smart Dust-Bin aims to make waste management easier and
RELEVANT:
introduce convenient waste collection schedules to reduce consumption of Fuel
required for Garbage collection trucks and reduce human resources required for the
same.
Objective 1 : Schematic Creation - March 2021
Objective 2 : Component Procurement - April 2021
TIME-BOUND:  Objective 3 : Assembly and testing - April2021
Objective 4 : Debugging and fixing issues - April 2021
Objective 5 : Working prototype and demonstration with Final Report - May 2021

S.M.A.R.T. Goal:  To be written after 1st review.

Introduction:
1. The detection, monitoring and management of waste is one of the primary problems of the present era.
2. Traditional ways of monitoring waste in waste bins is an inefficient process and utilizes more human
resources and fuel than necessary.
3. Smart Waste Management System essentially tackles this issue with its Smart Dust-Bin which can keep
track of garbage level as well as moisture level to help make waste management easy and convenient.
Description:
1) The smart waste management system gives a real time indicator of garbage level in the bin and assists
segregation of dry and wet waste at the time of deposition of garbage
2) In case wet waste is deposited in a bin of dry waste the user is alerted by a buzzer of error for putting the
garbage in the wet bin
3) The capacity of garbage at any given time is monitored and a notification is sent to the authorities that
the capacity is full, to take next action.
4) Notification is done by integrating an online application and sending the message “Garbage level Full”
through the same
The processor board will use humidity sensors like DTH11 to sense the moisture of the waste. The readings will
enable to alert the user via buzzer in case of incorrect usage of bin.

Ultrasonic sensors will be used to measure the distance of garbage top level from the edge of the bin. This will
help in determining the level of garbage in the bin
For alerts, the program will be integrated with online applications, that have feature to send SMS to desired
numbers
Using this data, the authorities can optimize waste collection routes and ultimately reduce fuel consumption.

The project is in line with our Prime Minister’s mission of Swachh Bharat.
