IV. PROCEDURES
A. Preparation Review of lesson in parallel circuit and rules for
resistances connected in parallel.

B. Mind setting Show to the class illustration of two bulbs connected in

series and parallel.
A. Series Circuit B. Parallel Circuit

Ask the students of the following questions:

Which of the two bulb connections will give bright light?
Answer: Parallel circuit, because the resistance offered
by the bulbs is low.
Which of the circuits give dim light?
Answer: Series circuit, because the resistance offered by
the bulbs is high.

C. Activity See the attachment

D. Analysis *What is the total resistance of the bulbs connected in
series?
Prepared by: ARNOLD D. ACADEMIA
Answer: 6 ohms
How did you solve the total resistance of the bulbs
connected in series?
Answer: Add the resistance of bulbs.
What is the total resistance of the bulbs connected in
parallel?
Answer: 1.33 ohms
How did you solve the total resistance of the bulbs?
Answer: Add the sum of the reciprocals of the individual
resistance.

E. Abstraction Explain the following:

*The resistance in series is higher compared to
resistance in parallel.
*High resistance of the bulbs connected in series make
little current flow, therefore bulbs cannot emit bright light.
*When one of the bulbs in series is removed, the rest of
the bulbs are affected because the current supply is cut-
off.
There is no other path for current to flow in series circuit.
*When one of the bulbs connected in parallel is removed
the rest of the bulb will continue to emit light because
current is not cut-off. There is still other path for current
flow.
*Bulbs connected in parallel emit brighter light because
the resistance in this circuit is very small so more
current can flow.

F. Application Ask this question:

A student has 15 used batteries at home. The batteries
are weak and he need 6 volts to power the radio to listen
his favorite disc jockey. What should the student do to
the batteries to get a voltage closer or higher than 6
volts?
Answer: Connect the batteries in series. The positive
terminal should be connected to the negative terminal of
the other battery and so on.
G. Practical Applications of Ask this question:
Concepts and Skills in Parallel connection of the appliances at home increases
Daily Living current consumption. What would you do to reduce the
energy consumption?
Answer: Limit the time in using the appliances.

H. Generalization Let the students enumerate the advantage and

disadvantage of connecting bulbs in series or parallel:
*In series circuit, the total resistance is high so current

flowing in this circuit is low.
*The current is cut-off when one of the resistors or bulbs
connected in series is remove because there is only path
available for the current to flow.
*In parallel circuit, the resistance is very low so current
flow is high and bulbs can emit bright light.
*Removal of one of the bulbs or resistors will not affect
the rest because there are other paths available for
electric current to flow.
*The only disadvantage of parallel circuit is the electrical
energy consumption of the bulbs or resistors which high.
