IV. PROCEDURES
A. Preparation Review the lesson about current and voltage.
Ask the following questions:
What is electric current?
What is the unit in measuring current? What is the formula of
finding electric current? What is the unit in measuring current?
What is voltage and what formula of measuring voltage?
B. Mind setting Show the students a picture of a bird perching on a high- tension
electrical wire.
Ask the following questions:
Why birds perching on a high voltage wire does not get
electrocuted?
Answer: Bird claws are highly insulated. It has high resistance to
electric current flow so current cannot flow through their bodies.
Why incandescent bulb generates much heat compared to LED
bulb?
Answer: Incandescent bulb has high resistance to current flow
while LED bulb offers little resistance to current flow. Electrical
device that offers high resistance to current flow generates more
heat.
C. Activity Refer to the attachment.
D. Analysis In the activity that you answered, what material has the highest
resistance to current flow?
Answer: silicon
When a material has high resistance to current flow, is it a good
conductor or poor conductor of electricity?
Answer: poor conductor of electricity
How can it be classified? An insulator or a conductor?
Answer: an insulator
When a material has low resistance to current flow, is it a good
conductor or poor conductor of electricity?
Answer: good conductor of electricity
What materials in the activity are classified as good conductors of
electricity?
Answer: aluminum, copper, lead, silver, tungsten and gold
E. Abstraction *Explain to the class the meaning of resistance.
Resistance is the opposition a material offers to current. It has the
symbol R and a measuring unit called Ohms that has a symbol Ω.
Every material offers resistance to current but the amount of
resistance differs from each other. More energy is required to move
electrons through high-resistance materials.
*Explain to the class:
It is difficult for water to flow in a narrow tube just as it is harder for
charge or electrons to flow in the wire that has a small diameter
because of the resistance of the wire.
*Let the students participate in the discussion of the factors that
affect the resistance of electrical wires:
1. length of the conducting
The longer the length of the wire, the higher is the resistance.
2. Cross-sectional area
The bigger is the diameter, the smaller is the resistance offered
by wire.
3. Type material
Materials with low resistance are better than with high
resistance materials. Copper wire is better than aluminum wire.
4. Temperature
The higher the temperature of the wire, the higher is the
resistance.
*Present the formula of calculating electrical resistance in a circuit.
To find resistance in a circuit, the formula is:
R=V where V is voltage and I is the current
I
*Give a sample problem:
A portable radio is connected to a 9-volt battery and draws a
current of 0.25 Ampere. What is the resistance of the radio?
Given: V = 9 volts I = 0.25 Ampere
Find: resistance
Solution: R = V = 9 volts
I 0.25 ohms
= 36 ohms
F. Application Why is it not advisable to use wire with a very small diameter as an
extension wire?
Answer: The resistance will increase making the temperature of the
wire to increase too and as a result, it will melt the wire.
Water heater, electric stove and flat iron are made to produce high
heat energy output by increasing their resistance to generate this
heat.
What energy saving tips can you give to reduce electrical energy
consumption of this appliances?
Answer: Do not prolong their usage.
Use only when badly needed.

G. Practical Applications How would you reduce the resistance of your extension wire when
of Concepts and in used?
Skills in Daily Living Answer: By plugging only one or two electrical devices on its outlet.
H. Generalization Let the read the definition and the formula in finding electrical
resistance.
Let the students remember the factors that affect electrical
resistance in wire.

ATTACHMENT TO ACTIVITY

Activity 1. Identifying electrical resistance of common materials.

Objectives
1. Classify whether the material has high or low resistance to electric current flow.
2. Solve for resistance of electrical devices connected to a power source.

Procedure:
Resistance is the opposition a material offers to electric current. It is measured using the unit
Ohm and has the symbol Ω. Every material has its own resistance to current flow.
Classify the materials in the table whether they have high or low resistance to electric current
flow. The lesser is the number of zeros, the higher is the resistance.
