Questions:
1. How are the lighted bulbs connected together?

Case 1: series
Case 2: series
Case 3: series-parallel combination

2. State the mathematical relationship between the voltage source and the individual voltage
of the lighted bulbs. Use symbols Vo, V1, V2 , V3 and V4.
Case 1: 𝑉! = V1 + V2 + V4
Case 2: 𝑉! = V3 + V4
Case 3: 𝑉! = [V3 = (V1 + V2)] + V4
3. State the mathematical relationship among the currents I1, I2, and I3.
Case 1: I1 = I2 = I3
Case 2: I1 = I3
Case 3: I1 = (I2 + I3)
4. Rank the brightness of the identical light bulbs in the circuit, from dimmest (rank 1) to the
brightest (?). Mark 0 the bulb/s that is/are not lighted.

5. Compare the brightness of the lighted bulbs in the same case with different amount of
voltage source.
Case 1 (Vo = 90 V vs. Vo = 180 V):

Bulb 90 V 180 V
Bulb 1 Dim Bright
Bulb 2 Dim Bright
Bulb 3 Unlit Unlit
Bulb 4 Dim Bright

Bulb 2 Unlit Dim
Bulb 3 Dim Bright
Bulb 4 Dim Very Bright

6. A household wiring consists of a voltage source connected across many loads (resistances).
Draw a circuit diagram showing the voltage source and three loads (light bulb, a washing
machine, and a TV set). Explain your circuit choice.

This is a parallel circuit with a fuse. Since every device is in constant contact with the main
circuit, if there’s a single problem in one pathway the other devices’ source of electricity
remains unaffected. There’s also a fuse in case there’s a device that causes too much electric
current flow within the circuit.

7. Rank the brightness of the identical light bulbs in the circuit below, from dimmest (1) to the
brightest (?).

6 Bulb A
5Bulb B
4Bulb C
3Bulb D
1Bulb E
3Bulb F

8. Describe what you noticed about the brightness of the bulbs when connected
a) in series
Since the voltage is equally distributed, the brightness is relatively lower than bulbs in a
parallel circuit.

b) in parallel
Since the voltage for each bulb is the same as the voltage in the circuit, the light
bulbs have higher brightness than bulbs in a series circuit.

9. Explain why some bulbs are brighter than others even if the bulbs are identical.

It’s because of the amount of voltage, level of

current, and resistance along the circuit which the
light bulb receives its source of electricity. The higher
the current running through the light bulb, there
brighter it is.
