Tutorial 5: Studies Based on 2 Samples

1. The deflection temperature under load for two different formulations of ABS plastic pipe is
being studied. Two samples of 12 observations each are prepared using each formulation, and
the deflection temperatures (in °F) are reported below:

(a) Construct normal probability plots for both samples. Do these plots support assumptions
of normality?
(b) Do the data support the claim that the mean deflection temperature under load for
formulation 1 exceeds that of formulation 2? Use α = 0.05.
(c) What is the P-value for the test in part (b)?

2. Two machines are used for filling plastic bottles with a net volume of 16.0 ounces. The filling
processes can be assumed to be normal, with standard deviation of σ1 = 0.015 and σ2 = 0.018.
The quality engineering department suspects that both machines fill to the same net volume,
whether this volume is 16.0 ounces. An experiment is performed by taking a random sample
from the output of each machine.

(a) State the hypotheses that should be tested in this experiment.

(b) Test these hypotheses using α = 0.05. What are your conclusions?
(c) What is the P-value for the test?

3. Tyre consumption for two trucks are recorded (in thousands of miles) as shown in the table
below. The table shows the number of thousands of miles that the truck will drive before tyre
exchange is required.

Tyre Consumption
Chevrolet Mercedes
35.5 52.5
35.2 49.5
39.2 38.5
37.6 42.5
34.5 45.5
33.5 42.5
41.5 44.9

(a) Is there sufficient evidence to conclude that the variance of consumption is different
between the two truck models? Use the test of hypothesis procedure with a level of
significance of 0.05.
(b) Find the P-value for the test in (a).

4. The length of metal shafts manufactured by two different dies is under statistical study. Two
random samples are withdrawn from the outputs of the 2 dies (Die A and Die B). The
information from the two samples is shown in the table below.

Data on the Output from the Two Dies

Die A Die B
Sample Size 12 14
Sample Mean 9.96 inch 10.07 inch
Sample Standard Deviation 0.35 inch 0.32 inch

(a) Assuming σ1  σ2, construct a 99% confidence interval on the difference between the
output of the two dies.
(b) Based on the result of (a), are the outputs of the two dies significantly different?
