HOW ECO-GUILTY
ARE YOU?
I committed a crime last Tuesday, which just happened to be Earth Day, a day that invites people to think about their eco-sins. I turned
on the shower, intending to get straight in even though the water takes a while to warm up. But then I decided to brush my teeth, and
suddenly the water had been running for over two minutes. By the time I got in, I was drowning in eco-guilt! I had wasted water…
Should you feel eco-guilty, too? Take the test.

GRAMMAR
Future tenses

Future continuous

We can use the future continuous (will/won't be + -ing form) to talk about future actions that:
• Will be in progress at a specific time in the future:
e.g.
When you come out of school tomorrow, I'll be boarding a plane.
Try to call before 8 o'clock. After that, we'll be watching the match.
• We see as new, different or temporary:
e.g. Today we're taking the bus but next week we'll be taking the train.
Will you be starting work earlier with your new job?

Future perfect

• We use the future perfect simple (will/won't have + past participle) to talk about something that will be completed before a
specific time in the future.
e.g.
The guests are coming at 8 p.m. I'll have finished cooking by then.
On 9 October we'll have been married for 50 years.

• We can use phrases like by or by the time (meaning 'at some point before') and in or in a day's time/in two months' time/etc.
(meaning 'at the end of this period') to give the time period in which the action will be completed.
e.g.
I won't have written all the reports by next week.
By the time we arrive, the kids will have gone to bed.

Future perfect continuous

Future perfect continuous

The future perfect continuous is a verb tense that describes actions that will continue up until a point in the future. The future
perfect continuous consists of will + have + been + the verb’s present participle (verb root + -ing).

When we describe an action in the future perfect continuous tense, we are projecting ourselves forward in time and looking
back at the duration of that activity.
The activity will have begun sometime in the past, present, or in the future, and is expected to continue in the future.

In November, I will have been working at my company for three years.
