MANNERS AND ETIQUETTE

Good manners and well established standards of decent conduct in social life.
They include words, gestures, movement, and way of speaking, being respectful,
politeness and sympathy. Manners reflect one’s personality. They are the real
ornaments of a gentleman.

Since man has to live in society he has to be careful in dealing with others. He
should not irritate others. He should behave in a way that pleases others. Good
manners and etiquette are the best recommendations of a man. Facial beauty can
attract only eyes. But manners and etiquette win the heart.

Manners and etiquette can be learnt, acquired and cultivated. Home is the best
school for learning them. Secondly friends, society and environment play a great part
in teaching manners and etiquette.

Our words should be sweet. They play an important role in our organisation.
Therefore one has to choose proper words and proper tone to utter them.

Our gestures should be courteous. We should be very careful in our behaviour


at social gathering. We should not speak while others are speaking. We should
disagree with others politely. We should not use harsh or insulting language or harsh
tone.

Even in a discussion we should wait for our turn. It is a bad habit to interrupt
others. Even when we criticise we should not lose temper.

People observe us whether we are in the school, in the street, at our house, in a
bus or in the company of friends. Therefore we must be careful about our behaviour.
We should not be indisciplined in schools. We should not shout or whistle while
walking in the street. We shouldn’t discuss things loudly.We should welcome any
visitorpleasantly. We should not jump the queue while waiting for bus.

Manners and Etiquette add charm to one’s conduct and behaviour. They win
the hearts of others. They are the most precious gifts of civilization. The success or
failure in the life of a man depends largely upon his manners and etiquette.
