Executive Summary

The main focus of the interview was to know how an organization follows the conflict

handling style and stress in the organization and what plan they implement to solve

issues related to this problem. For that, I have conducted an interview with one of the

workers who is working in Mandarin restaurant as a server from last six year. His

name is Doug Edward.

Further, this report describes the discussion that I had with Doug and what problem they

face while working in a restaurant and how they tackle that problem. What type of

conflict handling style they follow or what they do make atmosphere good which

releases the stress in the organization whether it is working good or not? If some

conflict arises what they do to solve that conflict and gives motivation to other staff to

work stress free in the workplace.

On interview that, I had with Doug there are some problems that occur in the workplace

that, I get to know and there are some recommendation that, I had given to solve the

conflict are built the relationship, effective atmosphere, take a positive approach and

negotiation are some ways to solve the issue and for stress in the organization limited

work hours and flexible work arrangement are some ways to resolve the problem.

The report starts with the interview followed by some recommendation that can be

implemented by an organization and appendices and their references at last is the part

of this report.

Honestly speaking, I am working in Mandarin restaurant from last six months and I am

totally aware of the problem that occur in the workplace. For that, I have requested one

of my employees who works as a server in this restaurant from last six year and has

more experience than me and faced many situations related to conflict and stress in the

workplace. Firstly, I start with basic question that comes in my mind was how long he is

working and then conversation begin and I asked number of questions related to conflict

handling style and stress in the workplace. But in some situation there are lack of proper

method was not followed due to that conflict happens and they cannot resolve by proper

method and also they do not have any proper plan regarding the conflict happen in

future in which they have to work on and do not have some specific technique due to

that stress can be released in the workplace.

Moreover, I ask him more question and answer are recorded in a video conversation

which is attached in this report later.

Organization- Mandarin Restaurant

As I have told you about the restaurant earlier in which this interview was conducted

and this restaurant is located at 4220 King St E, Kitchener.

There are 29 location across Canada where this restaurant is located. This is basically a

Chinese restaurant in which Chinese and mixed cousin are served to the customers.

Each branch of the restaurant follows their own strategies and techniques on which they

implement their plans (Mandarin restaurant,2020).

The two topics “Conflict handling style” and “Stress in organization” are very basic and

important factors in an organization. My interview was on this topic and these are the

methods can be followed by an organization.

Conflict handling style: It basically depends on the situation that occur we need to

understand and develop the capacity to use each style and because they reflect your

strong need for achievement and to control your environment (Canadian Organizational

Behaviour,10th Edition, 2020, p.316). The conflict handling style are:

 Problem solving

 Forcing’

 Avoiding

 Yielding

 Compromising

In the interview they sometime avoid the conflict but they do not try to solve the problem

and just it goes but it always not works if you need to find a solution for long time you

need to solve the problem.

Stress in Organization: Sometimes employees and employers deny the existence of the

stress in the workplace because of failure but then this cycle continues and an

ultimately become stressor which can be solved by performing various techniques

(Canadian Organizational Behaviour,10 th Edition, 2020, p.117).

Problem or issues

The problem that I saw in the interview and what I feel in restaurant are:

1. Lack of motivation: employees and employers do not motivate other staff

member if someone is not performing well in the organization which

sometimes demotivate the people and they cannot perform up to their

capabilities.

2. Proper plans: If some conflict happen, they don’t follow the proper plan and

sometime try to ignore the problem which is not a proper solution to a conflict.

3. Work overload: In situation where workload is too high like on holidays in

restaurant customer came in large number then proper plan is to be followed

so that no one gets stress and work efficiently.

Recommendations

Conflict is an inevitable and healthy part of life. At work each employee has different

opinion to solve the problem. Some times in conflict people do not try to find the solution

in which a solution is satisfactory to all (The BC Cook Articulation Committee. (2015).

1. Build the relationship: While working in any organization whether it is a restaurant

or company employees has to build a relationship with each it means the trust,

they had to trust each other while working at same place.

2. Effective Atmosphere: It means that any conflict that happen cannot be solved in

the heat of the moment. You need to solve it properly by arranging a proper

meeting and start conversation with a positive attitude. If any conflict happens

between two employees never try to solve that in front of customers which made

a negative impact.

Stress at workplace is very common but it can be reduced by taking effective steps that

can be followed as:

1. Limited work hours: In an organization or restaurant it is a manager responsibility

to give employees limited number of work hours so they cannot be in a stress

working. If they are not well or something happens, they were allowed to take

leave.

2. Check with in your Coworkers: As a manager his responsibility is to observe if

some worker feel stress while working during busy hours then he move the other

worker around him feels like the same way which reduce the stress of the worker

is a better way to release stress while working (E. Holly, November 5,2018).

Implementation

The implementation that, I suggested for mandarin restaurant is can be implemented in

short and long term as follows:

 Build the relationship: For short term: Every team member should trust

each other and help everyone while working in a workplace.

Long term: Each and every employee in restaurant should respect

each other which is a long-term strategy maintain peace in a work

environment.

 Effective Atmosphere: For short term: Environment in a workplace is

an important factor and always positive environment should be

maintaining.

Long term: Manager and every team has to take responsibility from

front that they will help every member if someone is facing problem

every time.

 Limited work hours: For short term: Manager should give equal number

of hours to everyone.

Long term: If work load is to high manager should hire more people

according to the work so that pressure of the work is equally divided.

 Check with your Coworkers: Short Term: Sometimes work load is too

high and someone is feeling more pressure while working manager

can help them by providing the same worker who will feel exact

pressure so that it will reduce some stress.

Long term: Every time this strategy does not work and when pressure

of the work is too high there are enough number of people that can

maintain the pressure equally and work load is equally divided

between each other.

The report based on two topics “Conflict handling style” and “Stress in organization” on

which, I conducted an interview with one of the workers working in a Mandarin

restaurant. Through this interview, I get to know that the environment in the workplace is

good and healthy. But there are some areas on which they have to work and follow the

proper methods to solve the conflict and stress related issues. To solve these conflicts

and stress related problem, I have given some recommendation that the organization

can follow and implement them with proper strategy for long and short term basis which

will be beneficial for them and help in the business to grow further and for that, I have

given some reference and attach a video conversation at last in the report.
