Tutorial 2: Use Smith Chart to solve problems where ever

necessary
1. On a line the maximum and minimum voltages measured are 25 V and 15 V respectively. The
distance between adjacent maximum and minimum is 20 cm. If the voltage minimum occurs
at a distance of 25 cm from the load, find the load admittance. The characteristic impedance
of the line is 100 Ω

2. A 30-m long lossless transmission line with 𝑍𝑜 = 50 Ω operating at 2 MHz is terminated with
a load 𝑍𝐿 = 60 + 40 Ω. If u=0.6c on the line, find analytically and using Smith chart

a. The reflection coefficient Γ𝐿

b. The standing wave ratio
c. The input impedance

3. Antenna with impedance 40 + 𝑗30 Ω is to be matched to a 100-Ohm lossless line with a

shorted stub. Determine
a. The required stub admittance
b. The distance between the stub and the antenna
c. The stub length
d. The standing wave ration

4. A transmission line of 50 Ω characteristic impedance is terminated in a load impedance of

80-j30Ω. At a distance of 0.3λ a short circuited stub made of 75 Ω line is connected in
parallel to the main line such that the impedance is real at the junction. What is the length
of the stub? What will be the VSWR on the main line beyond the junction towards the
generator?

5. A λ/2 section of line has 0.05 dB loss. If the line is open circuited at one end, find the
impedance at the other end of the line. The characteristic impedance of the line is 50 Ω.
What will be the quality factor of the section?

6. A short circuited section of a line is to be used as a parallel resonant circuit at 2.4 GHz. Find
the length of the section. If the line has 3dB/m loss, what is the 3-dB bandwidth of the
resonant circuit?

7. A coaxial transmission line of characteristic impedance 50 ohm is to deliver 10 KW of power

at a frequency of 10 MHz over a distance of several hundred feet to a load. The rms value of
current in the line conductor must not exceed 25 Amp at any point. What is the highest
value of VSWR that can be tolerated on the line?

8. The observed standing wave ratio on a 100-Ohm lossless line is 8. If the first maximum
voltage occurs at 0.3𝜆 from the load, calculate the load impedance and the voltage
reflection coefficient at the load.

9. Two semi-infinitely long cables of 100 ohm and 400 ohm characteristic impedances are
connected through a quarter wavelength transformer at 1 GHz. Find the bandwidth around
2 EE 301

1GHz over which more than 95% power transfer efficiency from one cable to another is
achieved.

10. A 75 Ω lossless coaxial cable is connected to an antenna of impedance 75 + j25 Ω at one end
and to a generator at the other end. The internal impedance of the generator is 50 Ω. What
should be the length of the cable so that maximum power is delivered to the antenna?
