Chapter 5: Migration and
Urbanization
Migration is a geographic movement of
people across a specified boundary for
the purpose of establishing a new
permanent or semi-permanent
residence (refugees are not considered
as migrants!).
Migrant is a person who comes from one
place to another, especially in order to
find work or better living conditions.
Synonyms: Immigrant, emigrant,
incomer, newcomer, asylum seeker,
settler, expatriate, expat, vagrant,
itinerant, gypsy, traveler, vagrant and the
like.
Circular Migration is a regular pattern of
short-term migration.
International Migration refers to the
movement between countries.
Immigrant is an international migrant
who enters the area from a place outside
the country* A person who comes to live
permanently in a foreign country.
Emigrant is an international migrant
departing to another country by
crossing the international boundary. A
person who leaves their own country in
order to settle permanently in another.
