2023 PROGRAM
Mu s i c
ALL MUSIC
tuesday 29th August - wednesday 6th SEPTEMBER
$10.00
Welcome to the 2023 Eisteddfod.
Performing on stage is one of the most exciting and challenging things anyone can do. It is very
different from rehearsing at home in front of the mirror or performing for the family. It takes great
courage to stand on the stage and perform. I congratulate all performers for stepping up and
sharing their talents with us during this special event.
The Bathurst Eisteddfod has built a strong reputation over the years for being a must see, must
participate event that brings pride to our local community. It’s a significant event on the
community’s calendar attracting thousands of performers from around the region every year.
For students of singing, dancing, playing an instrument or reading poetry, the Eisteddfod
provides the ideal opportunity to test skills and to learn to conquer nerves. Very often it brings
out the very best in performance, particularly for groups who are excited and challenged by the
competition. For schools, the Eisteddfod is the stimulus for choirs and to work together and
experience the joy of creating music.
The Bathurst Eisteddfod brings our community together, connecting schools, students,
businesses, community organisations and government to produce a sensational cultural event.
Good luck to everyone who is performing.

MEET THE 2023
ADJUDICATORS
Benjamin Oxley
After studying at the Tasmanian Conservatorium, Benjamin joined Opera
Queensland, and subsequently Opera Australia, performing a variety of
small roles. His further vocal study took him to England, initially on contract
with English National Opera (ENO), with whom he toured Russia. Since
leaving ENO, Benjamin has pursued operatic and concert work, and has
appeared with Netherlands Opera in Lohengrin, Opera de Vlaamse in Billy
Budd, and with Nationale Reisopera in Fliegende Holländer, Parsifal,
Manon Lescaut, Fidelio and Le Grande Macabre (Ligeti) in the presence of
the composer. Conductors Benjamin has worked with include Harry Bicket,
Richard Bonynge, Stuart Challender, Paul Daniel, Sir Mark Elder, Valery
Gergiev, Elgar Howarth, Sir Charles Mackerras, Edo de Waart and Jaap
van Zweden.
His oratorio appearances include Messiah Handel, Requiem Mozart with English Arts Chorale and the West
Barnes Singers; St John’s Passion Bach with John Ruskin Singers, St Matthew's Passion Bach with Crouch End
Festival Chorus; St Nicolas Britten and Magnificat Hovhaness with Melbourne University Choral Society;
Alexander’s Feast Handel for Tasmanian University Musical Society; Creation Haydn for Launceston Philharmonic
Choir; Elijah Mendelssohn for the Tasmanian Conservatorium Chorale; Messa di Gloria Puccini and Dvorak Mass
in D with East Grinstead Choral Society, and Petite Messe Solenelle Rossini with the West Barnes Singers and
Sydney University Graduate Choir, and the Misa Luba with Basildon Choral Society.
With over 20 years of teaching experience, I have helped many students achieve vocal freedom. My own teachers
include Eduardo Asquez, Andrew Field and Vernon Mackie, a pupil of Edgar Herbert-Caesari, the author of many
books on singing. My students have achieved numerous exam, scholarship and competition successes, including
recording contracts, entry into Sydney Conservatorium of Music, professional work with Opera Australia, musical
theatre and film credits.
I taught at The Italia Conti Academy of Theatre Arts in London, and also had a private studio in London. After
overseeing The Australian Singing Competition, I wrote the ebook Sing To Win https://www.amazon.com.au/Sing-
WIN-How-Singing-Competitions-ebook/dp/B00JDAR6CI that outlines all the aspects of winning a singing
competition. Repertoire choice, preparation and the winning mindset are what separates a singer for success.
Previously I have adjudicated for the Wollongong and Northern Beaches Eisteddfodau. In 2023 as well as Bathurst
Eisteddfod, I am adjudicating the Ryde Eisteddfod Classical and Contemporary Vocal sections, and also at the
Northern Beaches Eisteddfod Contemporary sections.

Cheryl Oxley
BMus, AMus, LMus, FTCL, MAM
Singing, Brass, Piano, Adjudicator, Accompanist, Conductor, Coach
Coming home to Australia after 13+ years, I was conducting 6 bands; training teachers and choirs;
adjudicating Eisteddfods, accompanying and coaching everywhere - for Festivals at the Opera House
and Town Hall, at National Band Competitions, Recitals and Exams; running Showcase Events - and
the Music Studio.
Sounds crazy, but music was and still is - my exciting, happy place. After 30+ years of teaching and
performing internationally, I wanted to find a way to give people of all ages and backgrounds the
opportunity to experience the life-changing power of music, and to enrich music and the Arts in
Australia. In search of answers I dived into some further high-powered education and completed a
Masters in Arts Management, and so was birthed GoBravo Music [our original instrumental arm] and
now StandOut Music Studio. My reward is the magic that happens in the Studio and on the Stage,
where sparks of creativity and talent fuse with each person’s unique expressive qualities to bring us
all wonderful performances, happiness and lifetime friendships.
