Art Presentation: The Seeds of the Area by Paul Gauguin 1892

The Seeds of Areoi is an Art that has been exhibited in the public gallery of the National

Gallery of Art located in Washington D.C. This artwork is a painting, and Paul Gauguin created

it in 1892. The style adopted by the Seeds of the Areoi was the post-impression style. The

physical dimensions of this art painting are w731 x h921 mm. The original title of the Seeds of

the Areoi was Tea a no areas. In addition, the medium that Paul used in this painting was oil on

burlap. The provenance of the Seeds of Areoi was the William S. Paley Collection.

The seed of the Areoi is a reflection of the painter's connection to the Tahiti. This artwork

was inspired by the duration of time he had spent in Tahiti after his relocation from France.

Gauguin has used the Seeds of the Areoi painting to demonstrate the beginnings of the

primitivism movement (The Art Story). The primitivism was a movement of art that occurred

during the 19th century where the majority of the Western painters had used various aesthetics

elements involving the non-Western communities (The Art Story). In this painting, Gauguin used

several bright and unrealistic colors to cover a pure subject that was close to nature and which

would be of significant influence to the rest of the European artists.

The seed of the Areoi had portrayed Gauguin’s miss, who was acting as the goddess

Vairaumati. The goddess sat on a blue and white cloth (National Gallery of Art). Gauguin also

infused several non- European sources, such as the ancient Egyptians in a hieratic pose and the

Japanese in the arms position (Google Arts & Culture). Besides, some West elements are visible

in the pose, which was derived from the works of a certain French Painter. The colors that

Gaugin employed are too eclectic. Gaugin, however, claims that he found the palette from the

Tahitian landscape (Identify This Art). The elegant diatonic chords that are present in the Seeds

of Areoi are more of the compositional eyes of Gaugin than the island's visible realities

(Singulart Magazine). The bright colors that Gaugin has used in the Seeds of the Areoi reflect the

yellow flowers in the trees, and they have been set up against the purple color of the mountain

coupled with natural modes, which have been scattered in the entire painting.

Gaugin has depicted Vairaumati sitting while she is naked as a sign of fertility. It has

been explained that the depiction of his girlfriend as Vairaumati by Gaugin wanted to imply the

continuity of the past of the island and his stay on the island. Gaugin also visualizes occupying

Oro’s place as the god of war, by also portraying his mistress as the Vairaumati who, according

to the original myth of the Areoi people, Vairaumati was expected to find a new race when the

male sun god had mated with most of the beautiful women. The following facts can support the

analysis of Gaugin's painting. The subsequent use of the color paintings has provided credence

and support to the claim that Gauguin had in mind Idealized and stylized form of the island

because he used some of the colors that were unique in nature. Secondly, Gaugin's anachronistic

vision of the island provided him with a model for his painting. From the Gaugin’s work, I did

not only observe but also learned the following. First, I learnt that most of the artworks and

exhibitions in museums have a great connection to the ancient history. For example the Seeds of

Areoi had connections with the primitivism era. Secondly, I also learned that the art exhibited in

the museums also portrays and represents the feelings, emotions and visions of the people.
