brush to penetrate thick hair and for detangling hair. Boar bristles are
usually softer than nylon.

Microcellular
Synthetic microcellular paintbrush bristles are produced having a
synthetic bristles
generally consistent cross-sectional shape along their length and a
rough and irregular surface. The bristles comprise 15 to 40% cells on
a volume basis, the cells being predominantly closed in the interior of
the bristle and being open along the wall to provide the rough and
irregular surface.

There is often limited scope for redesigning access to the workplace or within the workplace. In
such cases you should not redesign systems of work and processes to reduce the risks associated
with the storage and handling of dangerous goods, because it will be too expensive.

Delivery of materials will be planned according to the work progress to minimize storage on site,
where there are hither possibilities of damages and deterioration of materials.

Stored materials will be segregated to prevent cross contamination and limit losses should a
delivery be rejected.

The superintendent surveys stored materials during daily jobsite reviews and identifies any material
that have incurred damage or otherwise become defective and therefore unfit for use

Assessment task must be conducted and deemed satisfactory to achieve competency in this
task.
• All Workplace Practical/Simulation Tasks are tasks which will align to the duties performed in
this capacity on site in the workplace.
• Any machinery/equipment used during the process of the assessment tasks must be safe for
use and tagged if appropriate. All safety conditions performed under instruction by your Trainer
must be followed in line with your workplace policies and procedures; should the Trainer feel
the conditions of safety are not met for your assessment task, it may be re scheduled to a
different site or day until the safety issue is rectified. Your site supervisor may be contacted in
this event.
• If your Trainer feels the tasks has been not sufficiently covered, they may direct you to a similar
task, in line with a secondary Workplace Practical/Simulation Task which will be clearly advised
at the time of assessment.
• Multiple assessment of the same tasks may be necessary to ensure a satisfactory standard.
• An observation checklist will be conducted during the completion of this task, your Trainer will
notify you on the tasks they will be observing for this assessment.

Refer to the Learner Activity Workbook to help you answer the questions in this
task.

In this task, there are a total of 1 workplace practical/simulation tasks. You must satisfactorily
complete all workplace practical/simulation tasks.

Part 3: Volatile Organic Compounds

Typically covering 80 per cent of a building’s surfaces, paints are made up of a

variety of ingredients, some which are more benign than others. Possibly the most
harmful chemical found in paints are Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs), which are
carbon-containing solvents that vaporise into the air readily as paint dries.

These VOCs help make paint easier to spread as well as more durable, but often
have negative effects on the health of building occupants. Some exposure to such
products can cause headaches, dizziness and nausea, while higher exposure levels
can have more serious consequences, such as kidney damage and even cancer.

However, these problems can be avoided or at least minimised by specifying low or

zero VOC paints. These paints usually emit less odours, and offer faster drying times
and non-yellowing properties.

• Describe the characteristics of 8 Low or Zero VOC products available in Australia

Part 4: Waste

Solid waste encompasses many waste types produced in all areas of society. The
term 'solid waste' is simply a broad descriptor for waste that is solid in form.
Relevant legislation, including Environmental Protection Authority (EPA) and local
Council regulations apply to solid waste and paint sludge disposal techniques.

Part 4 Complete the following:

Prepare an information data sheet for the correct disposal of paint. Include water-based paint,
solvent-based paint and paint thinners.

Information Data Sheet

Disposal of Paint… the Right Way!
One of the many activities that the householder can undertake to achieve this goal, is the safe and
environmentally
considerate disposal of paint, solvents and related products.
The following checklist is provided courtesy of the Australian Paint Manufacturer’ Federation Inc., to assist
in the
goal of protecting the environment. It is intended to be “cut-out” and retained as a reference so it can
provide future
advice as to the right way to dispose of paints and related products.

CHECKLIST
BEST WAYS TO DISPOSE OF WATER AND SOLVENT-BASED PAINT PRODUCTS.
WHEN PURCHASING PAINT, remember to estimate the exact amount required for the job. Buy only what
you need.
Ask your retailer for assistance.
ALWAYS be sure to read the label which contains important information regarding the product.
THE BEST AND EASIEST WAY to dispose of left of paint is to use it all up. Apply a second coat or touch
up as needed.
LEFTOVER PAINT can be given to someone else who has need for the product. Make sure that any
product you
“donate” is in its original container and has its label intact.
WATER-BASED PAINTS can be left to dry by removing the lid and allowing the left-over paint to dry. This
should be done in an
area which is well away from children and animals. Allow the paint to dry completely. Most local councils
will allow the
container to be disposed of in the weekly household trash. However, it is advisable to check first.
Remember to
leave the lid off so that the refuse remover can see that the paint has hardened.
Properly sealed solvents and thinners have an almost unlimited shelf life. Keep and use.
SOLVENT-BASED PAINTS require special disposal practices. They are also ignitable and present other
hazards.
These products must never be poured down storm drains, the household sink (especially if you have a
septic tank), or on the
ground.
SOLVENT-BASED PAINTS (also referred to as alkyd or oil-based) should be disposed of as a household
hazardous
waste. Hold for a "Household Hazardous Waste Collection Day." If your local community does not
undertake such programs,
contact either your local or state government Environmental Protection Agency, for disposal guidance.
PAINT THINNERS, turpentine, mineral spirits and solvents should never be poured down a drain or the
storm
sewer. With the following simple steps, you can reuse these types of products. Let used turpentine or brush
cleaners sit in a
closed container until the paint particles settle out. Then pour off the clear liquid which can be reused. Add
an
absorbent (e.g. cat litter) to the remaining residue until it becomes completely dry.
Finally, contact your household refuse collection centre, local council or EPA for guidance on disposal. Or
go to
www.resoucesmart.vic.gov.au for more details.
