ABOUT THE STUDENT GUIDE


This assessment booklet and tool has been designed for students undertaking face to face mode
of study to provide information before students take assessments and contains assessment tools
to assess the skills and knowledge required from students to be deemed competent in this unit.
This booklet might not be suitable for students taking other modes of study e.g. online or work
based.
Please read all the information given to you when you receive this assessment booklet. If you do
not understand any part of this booklet, please inform your assessor/trainer.

PART 1: Assessments information: This part contains information on assessments for this unit of
competency and how assessment will be conducted throughout the unit to achieve the
competency. It includes:

 Conditions, context, required resources and location of the assessment.

Purpose of the Assessment


The purpose of the assessment is to determine competency in the unit CPCCPD2012 - Use
painting and decorating tools and equipment.

Context and Conditions for Assessment


To comply with the assessment conditions of this unit:
 You must demonstrate adequate skills and knowledge evidence by providing a satisfactory
outcome for each assessment task. You will be marked against the recommended model
answers in this trainer and assessor guide.
 You will have access to suitable facilities, equipment and resources, including template
documentation e.g. Work Plan Template, etc.
 EIC College will conduct the practical demonstration for this unit in its workshops- the ‘EIC
College Painting workshop’.
 Access to a range of documents and equipment found in the workshop (Please refer to
Appendix 1 at the end of this assessment tool for a detailed list of assessment resources).
 Knowledge assessment for this unit will be conducted at the EIC College classroom at the
location identified in the timetable.

Resources Required
In addition to the resources specified below, you will be required to have access to task resource
requirements specified before each task:
 Computers with access to the internet and printers
 Learner guide for the unit CPCCPD2012.

Performance Evidence
To demonstrate competency, a candidate must meet the performance criteria of this unit by
using, maintaining and storing all the tools and equipment listed below over the course of three
separate painting and decorating tasks, with each task involving an area of at least six square
metres:
 Brushware and accessories
 Buckets
 Covers and drop sheets
 Duster brushes
 Filling knives and blades
 Hammers and nail punches
 Hand sanders
 Heat guns
 Mechanical sanders, including:
- Belt
- Disc
- Orbital
- Random orbital
 Paint pots

Overview
This Practical includes a series of tasks to be completed by you in the EIC painting workshop to
demonstrate performance evidence requirements.
This practical demonstration will be completed in 12 hours.
To simulate workplace conditions effectively, a workplace scenario has been provided which
requires you to perform the role of a painting and decorating apprentice working for Edinburg
Painting Company Pty trading as EIC Painting Workshop and in the role of the painting and
decorating apprentice, the student is provided with a series of tasks in the form of “Work Order”
by the assessor (The Supervisor).
Please refer to the “Work Order” template provided for the task.
To complete the tasks defined in the “Work order “you will perform four (4) major parts in a
logical sequence:
Part 1: Understand and plan for the work: You will read the scenario, work order tasks and plan
for work including review instructions, plan for safe workups and apply risk management. You will
complete and submit a “Work Plan” template at end of step 1.

Part 2: Site, Material, Tools and Equipment Preparation: After understating and completing the
“Work plan’ in step 1, now it is time for you to put this plan into practice. You will prepare the
work area and material for the work and using Selection and Preparation Template identify the
functions, limitations and safe methods of operation of the selected tools and equipment.

Part 3: Complete the work order: In this step you are required to complete the task by selecting,
using, storing and maintaining a range of commonly used painting and decorating tools and
equipment and completing the task provided as a work order.

Part 4: Clean up: After completing the task you are required to clean up the tools and equipment
and ensure they are all stored properly and waste and material are disposed of in an
environmentally sustainable manner.

PART 1: UNDERSTAND AND PLAN FOR THE WORK


Part 1 Overview
For this part, you are required to read the scenario provided below, complete work order tasks
and plan for work including review instructions, plan for safe workups and apply risk
management. You will complete and submit a “Work Plan” template at end of Part 1.
Scenario
As a newly hired painting and decorating apprentice at EIC Painting Pty Ltd, you have been given
an exciting opportunity to refurbish Sharon’s guesthouse. Your supervisor has provided you with a
list of tools and equipment below that you will have the chance to use at least once during the
provided tasks under the guidance of a senior painter and decorator.

As part of the refurbishment project, you will be responsible for preparing the surfaces of the
walls for painting and painting three separate walls. These walls vary in size and texture,
presenting you with unique challenges and opportunities to hone your skills.
Specifically, you are tasked with:
 Task 1: Prepare the surface of the 6 sq.m wall for painting.
 Task 2: Paint a wall of 7 sq.m
 Task 3: Paint a textured wall of 8 sq.m

As part of your job role, you will have the following responsibilities:
Examine the work instructions for painting and decorating materials and equipment.
 Work Health and Safety (WHS), Commonwealth and state or territory regulations,
environmental plans and obligations, manufacturer’s standards, and workplace requirements
should all be considered while planning any project.
 Choose the right tools and equipment for the job, including personal protective equipment
(PPE), and understand their functions, limitations, and safe methods of use.
 Personal protection equipment (PPE) should be worn as needed for each task.
 Check the serviceability of tools, equipment, and hoses, tag leads, and correct and report

issues.
 Power tool and equipment guards, retaining bolts, couplings, gauges, and controls must all be
checked and maintained.
 Perform pre-operational checks in accordance with the manufacturer's guidelines.
 Follow the start-up and shut-down procedures outlined in the workplace.
 Use tools and equipment in a safe and effective manner.
 When tools and equipment are not in immediate use, store them carefully.
 After completing a work, clean, inspect, maintain, and store tools and equipment.

Part 1: Instructions
For this task, you are required to:
1. Read the scenario and work order provided above and review the work requirement and
instructions.
2. Complete the Work Plan Template which requires you to identify and plan for the work health
safety requirements, environmental plan, and personal protective equipment (PPE) as required
for each task, potential hazards and apply adequate control measures.

 After identifying the personal protective equipment (PPE), you will be required to demonstrate the use of personal protective equipment (PPE) to
your Supervisor at EIC Painting Workshop (Assessor) before completing the rest of the Work plan.
 In the following part of this plan, you are required to inspect the worksite (EIC workshop) to identify the hazards and apply the risk controls to the
hazards, therefore you will not be able to enter the site (EIC workshop) without personal protective equipment (PPE).

unit is assessed
