How can I identify poetic devices and how does that me like or not like the poem?

Students will be able to demonstrate an understanding of word choice and identify poetic devices in classic
poetry
Assessment
Daily Grammar
Journal
Lesson Procedure
Wait for students to complete daily grammar, then have one complete the focus on the board (5)
Have the students read the poem “Grape Sherbet” silently and then listen to it on tape (5)
Explain the background information – Dad gave sherbet to the kids so they associated the graveyard trip
with good memories (2)
I will then re-read the poem (3-5)
The students will then journal: Did you like it? Why or why not? Was it the metaphors, similes,
personification? Rhythm or rhyme? (5)
Have the students read the poem “Song of Open Road” silently and then listen to it on tape (5)
Have students write down the confusing words – discuss as a class (5)
Pose the question: What kind of person is the speaker? Journal about it, then discuss as a class (5)
The students will then journal: Did you like it? Why or why not? Was it the metaphors, similes,
personification? Rhythm or rhyme? (5)
