Reading literacy

Reading literacy is the ability to independently read, understand, analyze and think critically
about a range of different print and digital text types. Reading literacy is required for various
purposes such as for personal enjoyment, to learn about the world, and to be involved in the
community.
Reading literacy is the ability to understand and use those written language forms required by
society and/or valued by the individual. Readers can construct meaning from texts in a variety
of forms. They read to learn, to participate in communities of readers in school and everyday
life, and for enjoyment.
Literacy generally refers to reading and writing effectively in a variety of contexts. In the 21st
century, the definition of literacy has increasingly reflected the ability to use technology for
gathering and communicating information.
Instilling a love of reading early gives a child a head start on expanding their vocabulary and
building independence and self-confidence. It helps children learn to make sense not only of the
world around them but also people, building social-emotional skills and of course, imagination.
