The passing of
the torch is a symbol
of passing the
leadership from one to
another.

In Sikaran, it
symbolizes the
passing of the
leadership from
Supremo Meliton C.
Geronimo to Pantas
Meliton S. Geronimo,
Jr.
This ceremonial
passing of the torch
took place on March 7,
2015, in front of the
Municipal Hall of
Baras, Rizal. Baras,
3
Rizal is considered the birthplace and home of Sikaran and there can be no better venue for such
an important and meaningful event

.
On March 10, 1927, Meliton C. Geronimo was born destined to take over the Geronimo
lineage of Sikaran from Cipriano Geronimo, the current commanding authority or influence of
Sikaran. Cipriano Geronimo was the acknowledged last Sikaran Hari (champion) of Baras.

In 1958, Meliton C. Geronimo, established the Sikaran Brotherhood of the Philippines. In

1966, the Asian Karate Association recognized Sikaran as a distinct Filipino Martial Art and
promoted Meliton C. Geronimo to the 10th Degree Red Belt with the title of Grandmaster of
Sikaran, the Filipino style of Karate. On the same event, the Sikaran elders of Baras, composed
of Cipriano Geronimo, Melencio Bigasin, Manuel Ocampo, Aurelio Cabacob, Angeles Pilapil,
and Servillano Javier, bestowed on Meliton C. Geronimo the title Sikaran Supremo (Sikaran
Leader). This started the 57-year long and illustrious leadership career of Meliton C. Geronimo.
A series of bouts with stroke, which started in 2007, incapacitated Supremo Meliton C.
Geronimo, preventing him from physically exercising his duties as President of the World
Sikaran Brotherhood. This left him no choice but to eventually give up his position of President
of the World Sikaran Brotherhood of the Philippines in favor of his son Pantas Meliton S.
Geronimo, Jr. This event is what is now known as the PASSING OF THE TORCH.
Contrary to popular expectations, it was not a "hands-down-victory" for Meliton S.
Geronimo, Jr. There were dissenters to Supremo Meliton C. Geronimo's selection of his son
Meliton S. Geronimo, Jr. as his replacement as President and Leader of the World Sikaran
4
Brotherhood of the Philippines. The selection turned into a fierce "family feud." The selection of
Meliton S. Geronimo, Jr. represented the popular end. The dissenting group was represented by
Jaime C. Geronimo, and some members who took his side.
In September 2014, Meliton S. Geronimo, Jr., took a short trip to the Philippines to lay
the groundwork of his bid for President of the World Sikaran of the Philippines. To gauge the
feelings of the members, Meliton, Jr. called a meeting, with him and Jaime Geronimo presenting
their platform. During the meeting, it was obvious that there were members who were out of
touch of reality. Majority of those present during the meeting showed their support for Pantas
Meliton S. Geronimo, Jr. However, just winning the election is not Pantas Meliton S. Geronimo,
Jr.'s intention. Several members became inactive due to dissatisfaction with Jaime Geronimo's
brand of leadership. Some even changed loyalty. Pantas Meliton S. Geronimo, Jr. considered it
his duty to bring back the "lost sheep" to the fold. He knows that his father Supremo Meliton C.
Geronimo will neither permit nor accept any member to leave and not do something about it.

In September 2014, Meliton S. Geronimo, Jr. (standing in red shirt) called a meeting with
Jaime Geronimo and other senior officers to present their platform for election of President.

In the short time that he was in the Philippines, Pantas Meliton S. Geronimo, Jr. visited several
regional branches to find out what their grievances were and correct them. Before returning to
the United States, Meliton, Jr. was able to bring back to the fold the lost and wayward sheep.
Only a handful took a "wait and let us look and see if there will be any improvement" attitude.
Pantas Meliton S. Geronimo, Jr. gave them his word while invoking the legacy and record of his
father Supremo Meliton C. Geronimo. When the members learned of Pantas Meliton, Junior's
5
programs and plans, they were convinced of his sincerity in continuing the legacy of Supremo
Meliton C. Geronimo. They believe that Pantas Meliton S. Geronimo, Jr. is the way to progress.
To prove some members' discontent, a senior officer slammed his fist on the table during
a meeting and asked Jaime Geronimo what he has done since the time he acted as president. The
question was also asked why the Philippines was not able to send a contingent to the 4th World
Sikaran Championships in Canada in 2014. The question that really shook Jaime Geronimo was
when he was asked why the coffers of the World Sikaran Brotherhood of the Philippines is
empty despite the dues paid for membership and promotion. There was also no explanation to
what happened to the funds the Municipality of Baras gave for the Philippine Contingent to the
4th World Sikaran Championships in Canada, which the Philippines did not attend.

However, in the manner consistent with Supremo Meliton C. Geronimo's leadership

style, Pantas Meliton S. Geronimo, Jr. in a firm and sincere voice said:
"All these problems are in the past. Now it is time for all of us to stand behind the dreams
and plans for a bigger, better, World Sikaran Brotherhood of the Philippines. Let us all work
together and continue the legacy Supremo Meliton C. Geronimo built for all of us. I pledge that I
will not deviate from the goal of my father. I will be the President that the World Sikaran
Brotherhood of the Philippines all the members deserve."
Therefore, the World Sikaran Brotherhood of the Philippines celebrated the "Passing of
the Torch" on March 7, 2015 to coincide with the 88th birthday of Supremo Meliton C.
Geronimo.

In a moment withdrawn from company or

observation, Mantas Marangal Emmanuel

C. Geronimo, as he has always done since
1958.

Meliton C. Geronimo, Mantas Marangal

support for the leadership of Pantas
Meliton S. Geronimo, Jr.

The overwhelming Sikaran members who came from as far north as Ilocos Norte and as far south
as General Santos in Mindanao created a problem in accommodation. Several members opened
their homes to the visiting members, including the home of Pantas Meliton S. Geronimo, Jr.
However, these homes were not enough. Anticipating this problem, Janeth Geronimo made
representations with resorts in Baras for board, lodging and services. Majority of the foreign
guests were billeted at Funta de Fabian and Villa Lorenza Resorts.
The next problem was finances. The coffers of the World Sikaran Brotherhood of the
Philippines has a ZERO BALANCE. It was completely empty. As President of the World
Sikaran Brotherhood of the Philippines, it is the responsibility of Pantas Meliton S. Geronimo, Jr.
to make sure the members are properly billeted.

16
Pantas Meliton S. Geronimo, Jr. did what must be done. He used his own funds and
turned to his family and friends to help out. His sisters Janeth and Judy, and even his mother
Ruth helped not only physically but also financially. This proved the commitment of the
Geronimo's to Sikaran and the World Sikaran Brotherhood of the Philippines.

needs a much-needed rest.

The commitment of the Geronimo family in the cause of Sikaran, cannot be more obvious
than the picture above shows. Supremo Meliton C. Geronimo, suffering the ill effects of
several bouts with stroke tried his best to be part of the event. Mrs. Ruth Spaulding

On March 7, 2015, the most meaningful Sikaran event of the second decade of of the second
millennia of the common era took place in front of the Municipal Hall of Baras, Rizal. Witnessed
by almost 3,000 participants, the success of the Passing of the Torch surpassed the expectations
of everybody concerned, especially the Preparation Committee, headed by Ms. Janeth Geronimo.

19
Norberto San Juan, spokesman of Supremo Meliton s. Geronimo when he was Mayor of
Baras, Rizal was the Master of Ceremonies. Prior to the start of the ceremonies, copies of the
Souvenir Program were distributed for everybody to be aware of the celebrities who may not
have been present physically but were there in spirit and thought. Among these celebrities is His
Excellency Benigno Aquino III, President of the Republic of the Philippines. He initially hinted
his intention to attend (being a member of the World Sikaran Brotherhood of the Philippines) but
the following email explains it all.

OFFICE OF THE GOVERNOR

M E S S A G E

It is with great pleasure to extend my warmest greetings and

congratulations to all the officers and members of the World Sikaran
Brotherhood (WSB)/World Sikaran Brotherhood of the Philippines (WSBP),
as you hold a turnover of leadership, dubbed as “The Passing of Sikaran Torch”
on Saturday, March 7, 2015.
This ingenious form of martial art, which teaches self-discipline and
control, and simple and healthy life style should be promoted for the holistic
development of the Filipino individual. In addition, declaring Sikaran as
provincial sport under Ordinance No. 002-2010, is our humble way of
recognizing our men and women in the province, particularly those from the
Municipality of Baras, who fill our hearts with pride through their exploits in
this almost forgotten form of self-defense. I hope that the passing of the torch
to a younger generation will fuel our people’s interest in the enhancement and
further development of Sikaran, not only in our province but in the whole
country as well.
Let us all join hands in keeping the flame of Sikaran burning within
ourselves.
Mabuhay kayong lahat!

MESSAGE
My warm heartfelt greetings to the World Sikaran Brotherhood (WSB)/World
Sikaran Brotherhood of the Philippines (WSBP) on its Turn-Over Ceremony affair on
March 7, 2015 at the historical town of Baras, Province of Rizal. Likewise, I
congratulate the incoming Grandmaster/Supremo, Pantas Meliton S. Geronimo Jr.
who is from the lineage of the founder of “Sikaran Sports,” the outgoing
Grandmaster/Supremo Meliton C. Geronimo the famous “Mayor Latigo” of Baras,
Rizal.

As your Provincial Librarian, I am deeply honored to be invited in this

momentous event of your organization. As a Rizaleño, I am proud that this
WSB/WSBP has put us not only in the map of the Philippines but also in the world as
well in the field of sports (self-defense). Indeed, this feat could never be put in the
historical record without the dedication and contribution of the Geronimo's
particularly the founding father of the organization, Sir Meliton C. Geronimo. It is now
written in the pages of history, which our children can now be read in our libraries.
Thus, it is something that we should be proud of.

Again, congratulations and God bless!

WORLD SIKARAN BROTHERHOOD OF THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA

MESSAGE
Friends and Relatives in this, our Brotherhood of Sikaran!

First, I must thank our leaders and the team who planned this
event for their work and for asking me to speak here today.
I am humbled and honored. We have come together to
accomplish an event which is important to our history, our
culture and to our Martial Arts. As you know, Sikaran is the Art of Warrior Farmers. Our
grandparents developed this art as a means to protect our families from our enemies. Today this
exclusively Filipino Martial Art stands strong next to the other martial arts of East and Southeast
Asia. Sikaran has grown in popularity throughout the world. Therefore, we have this World
Sikaran Brotherhood. We have many reasons to feel proud.

Today we have come together to honor our leaders and to witness the ”Passing of the Sikaran
Torch” of leadership from one generation to the next. This is a proud moment, a proud day for
the Geronimo Family and for the World Sikaran Brotherhood!

With the induction of our new leader, we all need to come together as the true Brotherhood that
we are. I propose that we set aside any negative and competitive thinking. Our Grandmaster
will need our constructive ideas and the unity, enabling us to move forward…to develop and
grow…to advance Sikaran as our tradition art in modern times.

Our retiring Grandmaster/Supremo can still kick our butts if we don’t behave. Let us develop
the World Sikaran Brotherhood into a truly worldwide organization. He deserves our respect,
honor and affection, as does his son in his new responsibilities. Meliton Geronimo, Jr. is taking
on the leadership role as the new President/Pantas. Let us welcome and embrace him in this new
role. He is experienced and well prepared. Let us come together in the true spirit of
Brotherhood to develop and grow together.

“Salamat po!” to our retiring Grandmaster/Supremo and warm welcome to our new leader.

Pugay to all sikaranistas!

First and foremost, I would like to thank Grandmaster/Supremo Meliton C. Geronimo, for all his

the roof of the World Sikaran Brotherhood. Let’s continue the extreme degree of camaraderie as
we pursue our goal to spread our own martial art style and discipline known as Sikaran. Let us
help the new president succeed and continue the vision his father set when he established the

Mabuhay po tayong lahat!!!

PERSPECTIVE OF THE WORLD
SIKARAN BROTHERHOOD
ELPIDIO SELETARIA JR, 8TH DBB (#1487)
International Coordinator, WSB/WSBP

After the welcome address of the Honorable Mayor Kathrine B. Robles. the MC called Mantas
Dalubhasa Elpidio Seletaria, Jr., the World Sikaran Brotherhood International Coordinator, who
came all the way from California, USA. He was accompanied by his petite wife MJ Presas-
Seletaria.
In his familiar juridical manner, Mantas Dalubhasa Elpidio Seletaria, Jr. delivered his
speech entitled "Perspective of World Sikaran Brotherhood:

Honorable Mayor KC Robles, Honorable Rebecca A. Ynares, Governor of Rizal, ang

kagalang-galang na Grandmaster/Supremo ng World Sikaran, si Ret. Colonel at Ex-Mayor
Meliton C. Geronimo, Mantas Marangal Emmanuel Querubin, Pantas Meliton S. Geronimo Jr,
Likewise, I would like to acknowledge the presence of Steven Dowd and company from
Phoenix, Arizona, Darren Lea and company from Australia, and of course Mantas Marangal
Jesse Diestro and company from Australia, and Mantas Marangal Andy Sanano and company
Sikaran Brotherhood of the Philippines (WSBP) o ang Pandaigdigang Kapatirang Sikaran ng

32
trabaho, ako bilang full-time law enforcement officer as Senior Deputy Sheriff sa San Francisco
Per
authority of Grandmaster/Supremo Geronimo, si Emmy Querubin ay nagsulat at
nakapagpalimbag ng dalawang libro. Una, ang “SIKARAN, The Fighting Art of the Filipino
Store at on-line.
and directed the “WSBP Sikaran Instructional Video, Volume I” na naipamahagi na sa maraming
Chief, Meliton Geronimo Jr., bilang Editor-at-Large, at ako bilang Managing Editor.
Sikaran Brotherhood (WSB) or Pandaigdigang Kapatirang Sikaran (PKS) na may punong-
Salomon ng Kingdom of Saudi Arabia.
sa Hong Kong, India, Brunei, at Kingdom of Saudi Arabia.
Maraming salamat sainyong lahat.

By: Mantas-Marangal Emmanuel Querubin
9th Degree Red and White Belt (#87)
Presidential Assistant for Research and Standards

Zambales.
States of America at ang State Director ng Florida. Kasama niya ang kanyang pamangking si
Mike Balabat.
Kasama niya sina Renie David, Nelson Millare at Rogel
Orpina. Sa Region V (Bicol Region) narito ang Regional Director na si Romeo Paje. Kasama
niya si Stephn Oli, Rafael Arimado, Rolando Azul, Leopoldo Bolofer, Ramilo Cadag, Joseph
Gabriel, Rodrigo Granadillos, Hans Lleva, Benny Mendoza, Alfredo Nierva, Xavier Paje,
Wlfredo Rantael, Dexter Rebua, Agnes Reynolds, Resty Siapno, Leonardo Villa, Odmingo
Espenida, at Rene Valeriano
Sa Region VI (Aklan) kasama ng Regional Director na si Freddie Jizmundo, Jr. sina
Zandro Fred Jizmundo, Jr. at si Carlito Pantalla.
34
Mula naman sa Region X (Cagayan de Oro City) dumating sina Cris Cabingas at
Eduardo Solijon.
Ang Region III (Bulacan) ay pinangauahan nina Glen Nabarty, Jesus Nabarty Ryan
Nabarty, John Maglunob and Ben Thomas, Jr.
Marangal Roberto Pamilar, ang Presidential Assistant for Operations and Logistics; Mantas
Marangal Ernesto Millanes, ang Presidential Assistant for Regional Coordination; Binibining
Janeth Geronimo, Presidential Assistant for Events and Programs; si Ginoong Giner Migo
Burabod, Presidential Assistant for Junior Black Belts Council; si Mantas Emily Samillano, ang
Presidential Assistant for Administration and Liaison; sina Mantas Dalubhasa Ramon Valdenor,
ang Presidential Assistant for Liaison with the Philippine Senate and Sgt. Santiago Moya (PA
Retired), ang Presidential Assistant for Liaison with Malacanang Palace.
katulad ng Arnis Philippines, Philippine Amateur Judo Federation; Karate-do Federation of the
Philippines, at iba pa.

THE TORCH".

PRESIDENT'S PAGE
Presidential Notifications,

In the last few issues of SIKARAN TALIBA we have announced the celebration of the
Golden Jubilee of the World Sikaran Brotherhood of the Philippines and the First Sikaran Hall of
Fame scheduled for November 6, 2016.
It is with regret and a heavy heart that I am informing you now of the cancellation of
these events.
When I was named President of the World Sikaran Brotherhood of the Philippines by
Supremo Meliton C. Geronimo on March 7, 2015, during the Passing of the Sikaran Torch, the
coffers of the WSBP, was completely empty.
I have to dig deep in my family's and friends' resources to finance the Passing of the
Torch. Thanks God we were able to successfully go through this event. However, due to the
expenditure beyond our expectations, we have no choice but to re-evaluate our financial
priorities.
We have decided to reserve our stopgap means for something more expedient as the
construction of the Sikaran National Training Center at Bilog Lalim.
I promised to propagate, and promote Sikaran and these I will do. Pugay sa ating lahat na
mgaSikaranista.
