LANDING GEAR SYSTEM - DESCRIPTION AND OPERATION

1. Description (See Figure 1.)

A. The landing gear system consists of two (2) main gear shock struts, a nose gear shock strut, a landing
gear extension and retraction system, wheels and brakes, a nose wheel steering system, and a land-
ing gear position and warning system.

B. The main gear shock struts are attached to the wing and provide the majority of the load carrying capa-
bilities of the aircraft when the aircraft is on the ground. The main gear shock struts absorb the impact
of landing and are capable of being retracted into wheel wells located in the center wing area. Refer to
32-10-00 for more information on the main gear shock struts.

C. The nose gear shock strut is attached to the forward end of the fuselage to provide steering capability
to the aircraft when the aircraft is on the ground. The nose gear shock strut absorbs the impact of land-
ing and is capable of being retracted into a wheel well located in the nose of the aircraft. Refer to 32-
20-00 for more information on the nose gear shock strut.

D. The landing gear extension and retraction system provides the ability to extend and retract the landing
gear, and open and close the landing gear doors. An emergency extension system is also provided to
extend the nose and main gear should the normal extension and retraction system fail. Refer to 32-30-
00 for more information on the landing gear extension and retraction system common to both the main
and nose gear. Refer to 32-31-00 for more information on the main gear extension and retraction sys-
tem. Refer to 32-32-00 for more information on the nose gear extension and retraction system. Refer
to 32-33-00 for more information on the landing gear emergency extension and retraction system.

E. Wheels and brakes are provided to roll and stop the aircraft when on the ground. A single wheel is
mounted to the axle of the nose landing gear strut. Dual wheels are mounted to the axle of each main
landing gear strut. Each wheel on the main landing gear struts include a hydraulically operated brake
which is used to stop the aircraft. An anti-skid system is provided to be used in conjunction with the
brake system to prevent skidding main gear tires during braking. An emergency/parking brake system
is available for use if the normal brake system fails and to hold the aircraft in position after the aircraft
is stopped. Refer to 32-40-00 for more information on the wheels and brakes. Refer to 32-41-00 for
more information on the brake system. Refer to 32-42-00 for more information on the emergency/park-
ing brake system.

F. The nose wheel steering system provides steering capability to the crew when the aircraft is on the
ground. The crew uses the rudder pedals to input steering commands. The electronic steering system
converts rudder pedal position to nose strut and wheel position. Refer to 32-50-00 for more information
on the nose wheel steering system.

G. The landing gear position and warning system provides an indication to the crew identifying nose and
main gear position. The position and warning system also includes gear door position and squat switch
actuation. Refer to 32-60-00 for more information on the landing gear position and warning system.
