ACKNOWLEDGEMENT

They say that writing a book is like birthing a child. That has certainly been true for me,
and I have to thank several people who helped me through the birth pains I order to give
life to this book.
I would like to thank my husband, Arnell, for always believing in me and loving me.
Thank you for cheering me on, even when I believed that it was not possible to go on
any longer. You are a bright and enduring light that guides me in the darkness.
I would like to thank my two teenage sons, Daniel and Noah, first, for illustrating this
textbook, and second, for supporting me every step of the way. I hope that you get top
use this book eventually, and appreciate the stories I have in store for you. Many times,
I have written this book’s activities and insights with you in mind. Thank you for inspiring
me, and for taking care of your baby brother, Gabriel, a continuous joy and inspiration,
and the best reward for a tired teacher and writer to come home to.
This book would not have been possible without my mentors in the academe. At one
time or another, I was their student, and I learned so much from them. My deep
gratitude goes to my professors from the University of the Philippines, most especially
to Dr. Preachy Legasto; and to my mentors from the Ateneo de Manila University, Ada
Loredo, April Fernandez, and Nanette Fernandez. I learned so much from you when I
taught in the Ateneo English Department, the Ateneo Center for English Language
Teaching, and the Ateneo Language Learning Center.
To Dr. Lily Rose Tope and Rex Book Store, Inc. thank you for the amazing opportunity
of having this book published. Thank you all the editors and copywriters from Rex Book
Store, Inc. who pored over and vastly improved this textbook. Thank you for taking care
of all the endless little details that I missed, forgot, or simply did not know about. Special
thanks goes to Ms. Ivy Riototar for being insightful and supportive during the whole
grueling process.
Thank you to all my friends who supported me while I wrote this. Thank you Lorie,
Anna, Mike, Gabby, Reez, and Grace.
