In this set of activities, you should solve problems involving polynomial functions.
Hello Math-linian! By this time, you already know how to determine and interpret the graph of a
polynomial function.
In our previous lesson, we defined Polynomial Function as a
function of the form P(x) = a n xn + an-1 xn-1 + … + a1 x + a0
where an are real numbers called coefficients and n is a positive integer,
and anxn is the leading term, an is the leading coefficient, a0 is the
constant term and an ≠ 0.
In this lesson, we are going to apply our knowledge about polynomial functions in solving real-
life word problems.
So, what are we waiting for? Let’s begin!
Example 1: Suppose a windmill generates power based on the speed of the wind. This is represented by the polynomial
function 𝑃(𝑠) = 𝑠4 , where s represents the speed of the wind in kilometers per
1000 hour. If the wind speed is 15 kilometers
per hour, how many units of power, P(s), can the windmill generate?
Solution:
Example 2: The number of citizens (N) of Barangay San Isidro in t years is predicted to increase and can be modeled by the
function N(t) = 7t4 – 4t3 + 150t + 17500. After 3 years, how many citizens will be residing at Barangay San Isidro?
Procedure:
Answer: There will be 18, 409 citizens residing at Barangay San Isidro after 3 years.
Example 3: The number of tablets sold by a shop in SM Cabanatuan can be modeled by the expression N(t) = 7t + 25 and
price per tablet is modeled by an expression P(t) = 3t 2 +3t +36, where t is the number of months in a year. If we use this
model, what is the total amount of revenue generated by the shop at the end of the year?
Procedure:
Answer: The total revenue of the shop for a year is Php 54, 936.
YOUR TASKS!
Enrichment Activity 1: Read the problem and choose the letter of the correct answer.
The volume, V (in cubic feet), of a rectangular ice block is modeled by the polynomial function V(w) =
3 2
4w + 13w – 5w where w is the width (in feet) of the ice block.
1. Based on the problem, w represents the of the rectangular ice block.
A. volume B. length C. width D. height
2. The polynomial function represents the of the rectangular ice block.
A. volume B. length C. width D. height
3. What is V(w) if w = 4?
A. 256ft3 B. 323ft3 C. 434ft3 D. 516ft3
4. What is the volume of a 2 feet wide ice block?
A. 62 ft3 B. 66 ft3 C. 70ft3 D. 74ft3
5. The polynomial function of the rectangular block represents what equation?
4 2 1 2 1 2
A. πr B. . s h C. πr h D. V = lwh
3 3 3
Performance Task #2: Solve the following problems and show your complete solutions. (5 points each)
1. The estimated number of motorcycles, V (in thousands), in the Philippines can be modeled by the
polynomial function: V(y) = 24y 3 – 15y2 + 15y – 440 where y represents the number of years after the year 2000. What is
the estimated number of motorcycles at the end of 2006?
2. The profit, P (in millions of pesos), for a laptop manufacturer can be modeled by P = 3n 3 + 64n where n
(in millions) is the number of laptops produced. What would be the profit of the manufacturer if it produced 3 million
laptops?
