Quarter II, Week 2

Lesson 2: Problems Involving Polynomial Functions

MOST ESSENTIAL LEARNING COMPETENCY

M10AL-IIb-2: The learner solves problems involving polynomial functions.

In this set of activities, you should solve problems involving polynomial functions.

WHAT YOU NEED TO REMEMBER?

Hello Math-linian! By this time, you already know how to determine and interpret the graph of a
polynomial function.
In our previous lesson, we defined Polynomial Function as a
function of the form P(x) = a n xn + an-1 xn-1 + … + a1 x + a0
where an are real numbers called coefficients and n is a positive integer,
and anxn is the leading term, an is the leading coefficient, a0 is the
constant term and an ≠ 0.
In this lesson, we are going to apply our knowledge about polynomial functions in solving real-
life word problems.
So, what are we waiting for? Let’s begin!

Example 1: Suppose a windmill generates power based on the speed of the wind. This is represented by the polynomial
function 𝑃(𝑠) = 𝑠4 , where s represents the speed of the wind in kilometers per
1000 hour. If the wind speed is 15 kilometers
per hour, how many units of power, P(s), can the windmill generate?

Solution:

Step 1 s4 Rewrite the given.

P(s) = , s=15 kph
1000
Step 2 Find P(15) Identify what is asked on the problem.
We have P (15)
since it is asking on how many units of
power can the
a windmill generates if the wind speed
is 15 kph.
Step 3 15
4 Replace all the variable s with 15,
P(15) = since s = 15 based on
1000
the given.
Step 4 50625 Simplify the equation. Remember that
P(15)= (15)4 = (15((15)(15)(15) = 50625.
1000
Step 5 P(15) = 50.625 By dividing 50625 by 1000, we arrive
at the result 50.625.
Answer: The windmill can generate 50.625 units of power if the wind speed is 15 kilometers per hour.

Example 2: The number of citizens (N) of Barangay San Isidro in t years is predicted to increase and can be modeled by the
function N(t) = 7t4 – 4t3 + 150t + 17500. After 3 years, how many citizens will be residing at Barangay San Isidro?
Procedure:

N(t) = 7t4 – 4t3 + 150t + 17500,

Step 1 Rewrite the given.
t = 3 years
Identify what is asked on the
problem. We have N(3) since it is
Step 2 Find N(3)
asking how many citizens will be
residing at Barangay San Isidro
after 3 years.
Replace all the variables with
Step 3 N(3) = 7(3)4 – 4(3)3 + 150(3) +
3, since t = 3 based on the
17500
given.
Simplify the equation. Remember
Step 4 N(3) = 7(81) – 4(27) + 150(3) + that (3)4 = (3)(3)(3)(3) = 81 and (3)3
17500 = (3)(3)(3) = 27.
This is to make multiplication
easier.
Simplify each term. This is by
Step 5 N(3) = 567 – 108 + 450 + 17500 multiplying 7 by 81 which is
equal to 567, 4(27) = 108, and
150(3) = 450.
Add all values to get the final
Step 6 N(3) = 18, 409
result. Thus, 567 – 108 + 450 +
17 500 is equal to 18 409.

Answer: There will be 18, 409 citizens residing at Barangay San Isidro after 3 years.
Example 3: The number of tablets sold by a shop in SM Cabanatuan can be modeled by the expression N(t) = 7t + 25 and
price per tablet is modeled by an expression P(t) = 3t 2 +3t +36, where t is the number of months in a year. If we use this
model, what is the total amount of revenue generated by the shop at the end of the year?
Procedure:

Answer: The total revenue of the shop for a year is Php 54, 936.
