Lecture Learning Outcomes (LLOs): After completion of this lecture, you should be able to…
LLO1On topic 1 Calculate the moment of force which cause a body to rotate about a point
LLO2On topic 2 Determine the moment using equilibrium equations

CDT9 – Lecture Summary – Key Takeaways

MOMNETOF FORCE
Introduction
• We have been discussing the effects of forces, acting on a body, through their lines of
action or at the point of their intersection. But in this chapter, we shall discuss the effects
of these forces, at some other point, away from the
point of intersection or their lines of action.
MOMENT OF A FORCE
The moment of a force: is the ability of the force to
produce turning or twisting about an axis or point
or line.

CDT8 LECTURE SUMMARY

Broadly speaking, the moments are of the following two types:

1. Clockwise moments. 2. Anticlockwise moments.

It is the moment of a force, whose effect is to turn or rotate the body, about the point in
the same direction in which hands of a clock move as shown in Fig. (a) is clockwise
moments.
It is the moment of a force, whose effect is to turn or rotate the body, about the point in
the opposite direction in which the hands of a clock move as shown in Fig. (b) is anti
clockwise moments.
CDT9 - LECTURE LEVEL PRACTICE PROBLEMS (LLPs) to test the LLOs
To test whether you achieved the learning outcomes of this lecture, you should be able to solve the following
LLPs, in the class itself, after completion of the lecture. Minimum one question/problem (LLP) is designed to
test each expected LLO.
LLP1 (on LLO1): Determine the moment of the force 225 N about the Points A , B , and C and
determine the nature of the moments.

LLP2 (on LLO1):A force of 15 N is applied perpendicular to the edge of a door 0.8 m wide as
shown in Fig. (a). Find the moment of the force about the hinge.

Additional LLPs: Practice problems for homework
