Drug Abuse: Shisha

- Definition, Usage, Side Effects:

Definition:
Shisha, also known as hookah, water pipe, or narghile, is a type of smoking device
used to inhale flavored tobacco smoke. It originated in the Middle East and has
gained popularity in various parts of the world, especially among young adults.
Shisha smoking involves heating tobacco, often mixed with sweeteners, flavorings,
and other additives, and passing the smoke through water before it is inhaled
through a hose or tube.

Usage:
Shisha smoking is typically a social activity where individuals gather around a
shisha pipe and take turns inhaling the flavored smoke. The tobacco mixture used
in shisha pipes comes in various flavors, such as fruit, mint, chocolate, and more.
The smoke is drawn through water in the base of the pipe, which is believed to
cool and filter the smoke before it is inhaled.

Side Effects:
Health Risks: Contrary to popular belief, shisha smoking is not a safe alternative to
cigarette smoking. The smoke from shisha contains harmful substances, including
nicotine, tar, carbon monoxide, and heavy metals. Prolonged shisha smoking can
lead to serious health problems, such as lung diseases, heart disease, and cancer.

Nicotine Addiction: Shisha tobacco contains nicotine, an addictive substance.

Regular shisha smokers can become addicted to nicotine, leading to cravings and
withdrawal symptoms when they try to quit.
Respiratory Issues: Shisha smoke contains fine particles and toxins that can irritate
the lungs and lead to respiratory problems, such as chronic obstructive pulmonary
disease (COPD) and bronchitis.

Carbon Monoxide Poisoning: Shisha smoke produces carbon monoxide, a

colorless and odorless gas that can replace oxygen in the bloodstream, leading to
oxygen deprivation and potential poisoning.

Oral Health Problems: The act of inhaling shisha smoke can expose the mouth and
teeth to harmful chemicals, increasing the risk of oral health issues like gum
disease, tooth decay, and bad breath.

Secondhand Smoke: People around shisha smokers are also exposed to secondhand
smoke, which poses health risks like those associated with cigarette smoke.

Hookah Lung: "Hookah lung" is a term used to describe a collection of respiratory

symptoms caused by long-term shisha smoking. It can include coughing,
wheezing, and shortness of breath.

Spread of Infections: Sharing a shisha pipe can increase the risk of spreading
infections like tuberculosis and oral herpes.

Additives and Flavorings: The flavored tobacco used in shisha may contain
additives and flavorings that can be harmful when inhaled, and the long smoking
sessions associated with shisha use can increase exposure to these chemicals.

It's important to note that many people underestimate the health risks of shisha
smoking due to its pleasant aroma and social nature. However, shisha smoking
carries similar health risks to cigarette smoking and should be approached with
caution or avoided altogether to protect one's health. If you or someone you know
is struggling with shisha or tobacco use, seeking support from healthcare
professionals or cessation programs is recommended.
