1
EXPECTATION

This module is created for grade 6 learners. It is expected that each learners shall:

1. Identify the values of notes and rests used in a particular song

2. Give the meaning of each meter or time signature

3. Identify the time signature of the given group of notes/rest

4. Create a rhythmic pattern in a simple and compound meter.

BRIEF
INTRODUCTION

Notes and the rest have different values according to the given time signatures.

Beats in Beats in
Name Note Rest 2, 3, 4 6
4 4 4 8

When these notes and rests are combined, a rhythmic pattern is created.

Time Signature and its meaning

2 2 means there are 2 beats in each measure, 4 means a quarter note/rest will
4
receive 1 beat.

3 3 means there are 3 beats in each measure, 4 means a quarter note/rest will
4 receive 1 beat.

4 4 means there are 4 beats in each measure, 4 means a quarter note/rest will
4 receive 1 beat.

6 6 means there are 6 beats in each measure, 8 means an eighth note/rest will

8 receive 1 beat

REMEMBER

A time signature tells you how the music is to be counted. The

time signature is written at the beginning of the staff after the clef and
key signature.
Time signatures consist of two numbers written like a fraction.

The top number of the time signature tells you how many beats
to count. This could be any number. Most often the number of beats
will fall between 2 and 12.
The bottom number tells you what kind of note to count. That is,
whether to count the beats as quarter notes, eighth notes, or sixteenth
notes. So the only numbers you will see as the bottom number (the
denominator) will correspond to note values:
