 CHAPTER I

A. Background research

Language is a communication tool that functions to convey messages, ideas, to others in

spoken form. In the interpreting process itself there are several fields that require
interpreter services, one of which is the court, a mental health consultant, and people who
work in a business company. Sometimes an interpreter works in a courtroom, so the
quality of the translation delivered must be precise and accurate so as not to cause
misunderstandings between officers at the trial, witnesses, judges and suspects which can
lead to conflict. Of course, in this case the court must hire an interpreter who already has
international certification. The purpose of including an interpreter was due to difficulties
in communication. Like when a crime or case occurs in England and the people involved
do not speak English, an interpreter is needed to interpret between the police, lawyers,
clients. During the process, an interpreter may not side with anyone, adding translation
results and suggestions for judges. Therefore, a good translator is a translator who has
been legally sworn in. The type of translation that is appropriate to the legal situation is
consecutive interpreting where the translator will translate after the speakers have
finished speaking.

Another area that requires the services of an interpreter is mental health. During the
interaction process between practitioners and patients, it is important to pay attention to
each stage which aims to open communication to build trust so that the therapy process
can run well. One of the important problems that occur between practitioners and patients
is the difference in language, so the role of the interpreter is very important for the
effectiveness of communication during the therapeutic process. There are several things
that must be considered by translators for mental health cases which are written in the
AUSIT guidelines specifically for mental health. The mental translator himself must learn
a number of things such as mental interpretation keywords, as well as some information
regarding the importance of maintaining patient and practitioner confidentiality. Business
also cannot be separated from interpreter services. The task of an interpreter in business is
to translate negotiations with the right interpretation so that the message can be conveyed
according to the context. There are also two types of translation styles used, namely
consecutive and wishpering. The tools needed for business translation also sometimes
require special technology to assist during the meeting process. With sequential
interpretation, the speaker stops speaking after a few minutes so that the interpreter can
continue interpreting what he is saying. This is what is often called the style of
interpretation back and forth. This is a good choice at smaller business meetings.
Business interpreters must maintain concentration at all times for accurate interpretation.

In this simple research, the researcher tries to analyze the process of interpretation in
each field and also examines the difficulties during the simulation.

THEORETICAL REVIEW

A. Definition of Interpreting

Interpreting is an activity of translating from the source language into the target
language orally, where there is someone who is the client, then the translator, and also
someone who is the target language of the client (Brislin 1976). The person who does this
interpreting is called the interpreter, while he is called the interpreter. Interpreting is
something that plays an important role in anything related to foreign languages such as in
the world of work. In interpreting there are also several types of translation, namely
consecutive interpreting, simultaneous interpreting, sight interpreting, and whispered
interpreting. Each of the several types of interpreting certainly has its own role and way
of working. The use of the interpreting can be used according to the context and the
situation itself.

The workings of each interpreter are different, and depending on the situation, which
type of interpreting you want to use. For example, consecutive interpreters are usually
used for seminars, meetings, conferences and training. Consecutive interpreters work by
listening first and then conveying the results of the translation to the audience after the
speaker has finished. In contrast to the simultaneous, where interpreters translate directly
without any pauses like consecutive interpreters. So when the source language of the
speaker is speaking, the translator also translates directly into the target language for the
audience.

In interpreting there are also special translators for special people, such as the deaf. In
that case, the type of interpreting sight interpreting can be used. Sight interpreting is a
translation that translates in the form of written text, or in the sense that it can also
translate while reading. So, in translating language we can write it down on paper.
Because someone who is deaf usually uses his own body language, therefore an
interpreter who also understands his body language is needed to respond and
communicate with each other. Apart from that, sight interpreting is also used for other
health-related matters.

Meanwhile, whispered interpreting is a translation that is done in a whisper. Usually

used only for small meeting activities with a short duration. This type of interpreting has
limitations, because only one participant can receive a translation at a time. Translators
are only allowed to speak in a whisper, and they can also translate directly without
pausing (simultaneously) or by pausing first (consecutively).

B. Legal Setting to Interpreter

Law is a rule consisting of norms and sanctions. The purpose of the existence of law
is to maintain security and order in a country, and also uphold justice in its place or
portion. Law is coercive because there are rules and prohibitions which must be obeyed
by the community, these rules and prohibitions are a guide or guideline for life in society
(Untrecht 1996:13). According to Lawrence M. Friedman Culture/Legal Culture is a
human attitude towards law and the legal system of beliefs, values, thoughts, and
expectations.

In a legal situation, whether independence or not, it is certain that there will be people
who are hostile to it. Of course, these violations have consequences, each violation has a
different punishment, it all depends on the size of the violation that was committed and
what happened. In big cases, usually in the law there will be a defense in order to restore
lighter legal provisions. In this case, the role of a lawyer is absolutely necessary, of
course, to help people caught in the law. Apart from being a lawyer, the role of an
interpreter can also help, especially if there is a foreign language that is not understood at
the time the trial occurs. In court, legal interpreters assist both the prosecution and the
accused to ensure a fair and just outcome. Legal interpreting is a specialised type of
interpreting that allows people who speak different languages to communicate in a legal
or paralegal setting.

According to law, an interpreter can use different types of interpreter simultaneously

or can use them sequentially. In the work of the interpreter only as a translator only.
Considering that dealing with law is tough, of course being an interpreter must be trusted
apart from having more knowledge, also being able to keep secrets about what happened
to his client. In addition, an interpreter certificate is also required. The certificate is used
for self-identification, the quality of an interpreter, as well as concrete written proof that a
qualified interpreter is indeed.

C. Business Setting to Interpreter

Business is an activity that produces both relationships, goods and services, as well as
experiences that involve many people and companies. But in essence a business is
something that produces everything and the output it produces is money. In selling goods
or services, of course there are producers and consumers in the business. From the results
of George W. England's research on 1,072 company leaders in the United States, a more
diverse income was obtained regarding company goals, namely:

1. Profitability (generate profits).

2. Productivity (producing products with a certain quality or quantity).
3. Growth (grow and develop).
4. Employee (satisfying employees).
5. Community interest (meeting community needs).

 Business in the form of goods, such as selling clothing, food, boards. And for
services, such as editors, interpreters, and so on. In this case, doing business is an
opportunity for someone to fill this opportunity. We can also be an interpreter in business,
this for a conference interpreter can help you communicate effectively with companies
and organizations and discuss ideas without misunderstandings.

The existence of language differences is a barrier to carrying out daily life, just like in
business. And when this language barrier gets in the way of business communication, an
interpreter service is the only way to fix the problem. Interpreting is a translator from the
source language to the target language in a professional manner. Interpreting in business
apart from being related to companies or meetings with clients in the global partnership
business era, also plays a role in bargaining when shopping. For example, for example, an
Indonesian citizen who is on vacation in London, then goes shopping at the market and
wants to bargain, but the limitation of a foreign language is an obstacle, so here the role
of an interpreter to assist in bargaining therapy is urgently needed.

In business settings for interpreting, a translator can use the type of interpreter
simultaneously or successively. Depends on your agreement with the interpreter. In the
business setting for interpreting, a translator can use either a simultaneous or a
consecutive type of interpreter. Depends on your agreement with the translator. As an
interpreter, you must provide the best for the client, for the sake of client trust and
satisfaction. Always expand your insight and knowledge as widely as possible, and also
include a certificate to guarantee the identity of quality as a good interpreter.

D. Mental Health to Interpreter

Mental health is everything related to a person's mental, emotional and psychological

condition. Impactful life events can impact a person's mental health. Every person's
mental health condition is of course different, because based on life experience what
happens is not the same. There are several factors that cause mental health disorders,
namely head injuries, genetic factors or a history of mental health disorders in the family,
domestic violence or other forms of abuse, a history of childhood abuse, having brain
chemical disorders or disorders. on the brain, experiencing discrimination and stigma,
loss or death of someone very close, experiencing social losses, such as poverty or debt
problems, and experiencing significant trauma, such as military combat, serious
accidents, or other criminal acts.

Some of these causal factors can pose a risk for mental health disorders, such as
women at high risk of suffering from depression and anxiety, while men have a risk of
developing substance dependence and antisocial behavior, having childhood problems or
lifestyle problems, having a stressful profession, such as doctors and businessmen, have a
history of family members or families with mental illness, have a history of birth with
abnormalities in the brain, have a previous history of mental illness, experience failure in
life, such as school or work life, and abuse alcohol or illegal drugs. Therefore, the need

for comfort and peace in life must really be maintained, then if you already feel that your
mental health is disturbed, hurry up to see a psychiatrist.

A psychiatrist or psychiatrist will begin diagnosing mental health disorders with

medical and psychiatric interviews. The doctor will ask the patient according to what he
feels and experiences. Then, the doctor will carry out a physical examination to eliminate
the possibility of other diseases. And the next action is giving directions, or treatment
with certain conditions. However, treatment is better than prevention, in ways such as
getting used to positive thinking, maintaining good relationships with others, ensuring the
body gets enough rest, and also doing positive activities.

Mental health interpretation is a special subset of medical interpretation. Interpreters

are very helpful in dealing with mental health, such as helping patients understand their
treatments. Interpreters enable patients to understand the risks and benefits of a given
treatment plan. That way, they can make an informed decision. Mental health
interpretation improves patient safety and compliance, mental illness causes a decrease in
quality of life, so patient must have that protection. Because mental health interpreting is
a specialized subset of medical interpreting, the need to select a very detailed interpreter
to understand the patient so that no party is harmed. The type of interpreter used in this
condition can use a simultaneous interpreter, counsel, and also a sight interpreter.

 CHAPTER III

A. Process of analyzing and simulating

In making interpreting simulations it is necessary to analyze interpreting videos in various

settings. The analysis process is carried out by collecting data in the form of video content
that has been observed starting from understanding from various interpreting, what is
discussed and done by the subject in the video, as well as examples of the dialogues that
are demonstrated. After that create scripts that will be used in making video simulations
interpreting in business settings, mental health settings, and legal settings. The video was
made according to various interpretations.

Based on the results analysis of the videos and the simulation process of making
videos that discuss interpreting in business setting, mentalhealth setting, and legal setting
it is found that there are difficulties experienced by our group. The difficulties process of
analysis and simulation are as follows:

1) Business Setting
a. Difficulty finding the right video about international business meetings
b. Business selection for dialogue creation
c. Make the number of roles to match the number of group members
2) Mentalhealt Setting
a. The language is difficult to understand, because there are language differences
from several countries such as Russian, Hebrew in the dialogue.
b. Pronounciation is not clear in some dialogues.
c. It's hard to find videos about mental health that fit on YouTube.
3) Legal interpreting
a. Difficulty finding examples of dialogue related to the video
b. Difficulties when there are unfamiliar court terms
c. Difficulty understanding the position between witnesses, officers, etc
d. The interpreter must be swift because they have to translate a lot from several
people such as judges, prosecutors, etc.
e. It's a little difficult to edit the video

JPU: When and where did you find out that your motorcycle was missing?

Interpreter: Kapan dan dimana saudara mengetahui sepeda motor saudara telah hilang?

Saksi Korban: Setelah saya selesai dari warnet saya hendak pulang lihatsepeda motor honda
vario milik saya yang di parkir didepan warnet ada yang membawanya,saya keluar kejar, tapi
mereka tidak terkejar.

Interpreter: After I finished from the internet cafe, I was about to go home. I saw my Honda
Vario motorbike parked in front of the internet cafe, someone took it, I went out to chase
them, but they were not caught up.

JPU : According to your knowledge, how many people brought your motorcycle?

Interpreter: Menurut sepengetahuan saudara ada berapa orang yang membawa motor
saudara?

Saksi Korban: Saya hanya melihat 1 orang

Interpreter: I only saw 1 person

JPU: Did you see/know the characteristics of those who brought your motorcycle?

Interpreter: Apakah saudara saksi melihat/mengetahui ciri-ciri dari yangmembawa motor

saudara?

Saksi Korban: Saya melihat yang membawa motor menggunakan helm fullface dan di
lengan sebelah kanannya terdapat tato dan wajah terlihat samar.

Interpreter: I saw the one on the motorbike wearing a full face helmet and on his right arm
there was a tattoo and his face was barely visible.

JPU : When you noticed the loss of the motorcycle, were there other items that were missing
or damaged?

Interpreter: Saat saudara mengetahui hilangnya sepeda motor apakah ada benda lain yang
hilang ataupun rusak?

Saksi Korban : Ada majelis hakim, kamera cctv yang ada di parkiran warnet rusak.

Interpreter: There is a panel of judges, the CCTV camera in the parking lot of the internet

Hakim: Was the motorbike locked when left?

Interpreter: Apakah motor sudah dalam keadaan terkunci saat ditinggalkan?

Saksi Korban: Ya, ketika saya sedang memarkirkan sepeda motor tersebut sudah saya kunci.

Interpreter: Yes, when I was parking the motorbike, I locked it.

PH : Are you sure about the features?

Interpreter: Apakah anda yakin dengan ciri-cirinya?

Saksi Korban: Saya mengetahui betul terdapat tato dilengan kanannya.

Interpreter: I know very well there is a tattoo on his right arm.

PH : But there are many people who have tattoos on their right arm, why are you sure that
they are the ones who stole the motorbike?
Interpreter: Tetapi orang yang mempunyai tato dilengan kanan banyak,kenapa saudara bias
yakin yang mencuri motor tersebut adalah mereka?

Saksi Korban: Saya meyakini bahwa ukuran tato tersebut hamper satu jengkal tangan, dan
warnanya hitam.

Interpreter: I believe that the size of the tattoo is almost an inch of the hand, and the color is
black.

PH : Enough, your honor

Hakim Ketua : Both the testimony of the witness is considered sufficient, and we thank you,

Interpreter: Baik keterangan dari saksi dianggap cukup, dan kami ucapkan terima kasih, dan
