1. INTRODUCTION
PT Amman Mineral Nusa Tenggara (AMNT) plans to build additional combine cycle power generation plant
for their expansion projects including smelter and other new facilities. To provide gas for those facilities
AMNT engaged PT Medco Sumbawa Gas (MSG) to develop and operate a new LNG Terminal and Regas
Facility within AMNT operation area in Benete Bay of Sumbawa Island, West Nusa Tenggara, Indonesia.
The project includes facilities of onshore LNG storage tank with capacity of 50,000 m3 and 160,000 m3,
regasification unit to produces up to 77 mmscfd gas, an LNG-Carrier jetty with trestle, utilities, buildings
and gas sendout pipelines to the power plant and smelter.

2. SCOPE
This document covers the requirement of painting and coating of materials, surface preparation and
application of painting system inspection and test, safety and corrosive protection for piping, pipelines,
valves, buried pipes, equipment and steel structure to be used in the Sumbawa LNG Regasification
Terminal project.

5. GENERAL REQUIREMENTS
Insulated or uninsulated equipment, piping and pipelines above ground shall be prepared and coated in
accordance with requirements of this specification and its appendices.
According to ISO12944, the corrosivity of environments of this project can be classified as C5, which is the
basis of painting system design and determination of the paint film thickness. The paint Supplier of the
epoxy painting for the internal surface of potable water tank shall furnish a certificate confirming the
suitability of the system to meet applicable local authority and meets international health standards.
Fixings and fastenings shall be hot-dip galvanized complying with BS EN ISO 1461 with a minimum
average coating weight of 610g/m2.
Small steel components, such as hand railing, etc, shall be galvanized. Safety features shall be finished in
yellow.

5.1. Steel Substrate Rust Grade


The surface preparation of steel structural members and pipes shall comply with ISO 8501.

5.2. Stainless Steel


If the atmosphere of plant or process unit (such as in the environment of LNG jetty, trestle & terminal)
involves the presence of chloride, stainless steel piping and equipment shall be painted, even under
insulation, shall be painted to avoid corrosion of Stress Corrosion Cracking (SCC). For Stainless
Steel there will are different cases:
▪ Insulated pipelines SS 304 or 316 will be protected by only primer coat.
▪ Unisulated pipelines in SS 304 and SS 316, will be protected by two layer epoxy and
polyurethane.
▪ Either insulated or uninsulated SS 316 L will not need any primer protection.
During the transportation of stainless steel equipment and piping to deck cargo, the surfaces shall
be protected with a rust inhibitive compound, or a temporary removable coating to be field removed
by solvent, or any other protection system approved by the COMPANY.
Paints and markings used for stainless steel are required to be free of chloride and shall not contain
metallic zinc either

5.3. Equipment Surface Not to be Painted


The following surfaces shall not be painted unless otherwise specified:
▪ Cement wall cladding
▪ The area local to weld edges shall be applied masking tape, to prevent them being coated.
▪ Bright finished steel operating mechanisms on machinery (these shall be protected against
corrosion during transport, storage and erection).
▪ Teflon, rubber, glass, tile, etc.
▪ Galvanized grating, bolt nut and washer.

▪ Carbon steel anchoring items partially embedded in concrete or block work shall be hot dip
galvanized and protected at the junction by a strip of approved alkali resistant mastic filler.
▪ Instrument tubing and it’s accessories.
▪ Electrical and instrument cables and it’s accessories such as Junction Box.
▪ Hose and Hose coupling.
▪ Precautions shall be taken to prevent paint from being applied to equipment nameplates,
instrument glasses and gauge dials, couplings, shafts, valve stems, bearings, and other
machined surfaces (flanges, raised gasket faces except with faces not touched by gasket and
bolt holes).

6. REQUIREMENTS FOR SURFACE PREPARATION


6.1. General
Surface preparation by blast cleaning is the minimum acceptable standard for all paintworks unless
other methods, such as mechanical cleaning or acid pickling are specifically approved

6.2. Blast Cleaning of New Steelwork


▪ The equipment used for blast cleaning shall be submitted to COMPANY approval.
Compressed air shall be free from oil and water. It should do inspection in accordance with
ASTM D4285
▪ The type and size of abrasives shall comply with requirements of ISO 8501 et sequent, 11.124
and 11.126 standards.
▪ Metallic abrasive (steel shot/ steel grit) or non-metallic abrasive (copper ore) may be used.
▪ Abrasives used more than once shall be filtered using a dust removal system with sieves to
remove fine and contaminated materials, and the grading shall be checked at regular intervals
and fresh abrasives shall be added to ensure that the correct grading is maintained.
▪ Before blast cleaning commences, oil and grease shall be removed from the surfaces, and
defects shall be chipped or ground.
▪ Blast cleaned surfaces shall comply with the requirement of ISO 8501 et sequent standards
and in conformity with the painting systems listed here-under.
▪ Sa 2-½ blast cleaning of steel structures may be performed on the steel sections before
welding works, by using automatic blast cleaning and priming equipment. After welding, the
weld itself and the damaged zones shall be prepared to Sa 2-½ for painting either by blasting
or power tool cleaning.

6.3. Wet Abrasive Cleaning of Steelwork


▪ Wet abrasive cleaning shall only be used under site conditions with the approval of
COMPANY, to avoid any narrow equipment deterioration.
▪ Further to the requirements defined in above paragraph, the cleaned surface shall be rinsed
with fresh water. The use of corrosion inhibitor is not allowed. The surface tolerant primer shall
be applied on the same day, if required.
▪ Any inhibitive system used shall be compatible with the subsequent painting system.

6.4. Power Tool Cleaning of Steelwork


▪ This cleaning procedure shall apply only where blast cleaning is not possible when stated in
the specifications or when approved by the COMPANY (e.g.: before touch-up of erected
equipment).
▪ All surfaces contaminated by oil or grease shall be cleaned by scraping, wiping, washing with
approved detergent, and rinsing with fresh water until the surface passes a water break test,
i.e. clean fresh water spreads freely over the surface with a low contact angle.
▪ The surface shall be prepared to remove all mill scale and rust, until grade St 3 of ISO 8501 is
obtained, with an acceptable surface profile.
▪ Where soluble salt (e.g. sea salt) are present, the surfaces shall be washed with fresh water,
prior to mechanical cleaning.

6.5. Cleaning of Sound, Previously Painted Steelwork


▪ Areas which are contaminated with oil or grease shall be cleaned as detailed here above.
▪ All sound, strongly adherent paint shall be thoroughly cleaned. If required, a 1 % aqueous
solution of detergent shall be used, followed by rinsing.
▪ Previous paint remaining too glossy smooth shall be lightly abraded with 240 grade abrasive
paper.

6.6. Preparation of HOT DIP GALVANIZED Steelwork for Painting


▪ All galvanized steelwork shall be cleaned and degreased before painting.
▪ All dirt, grease, oil and zinc oxides shall be removed by cleaning with water-soluble degreaser,
followed by application of mordant solution (phosphoric acid solution) or cautious surface
treatment by blasting (sweeping) to increase the roughness (only for workshop) prior to
applying the painting.

7. PAINT SYSTEM
7.1. General
▪ All paint applications shall be recorded in accordance with the inspection requirements.
▪ For tanks, painting shall be applied after hydrotest unless otherwise specified.
▪ Shop-applied primer surfaces shall be cleaned by proven method if they have been severely
contaminated with chlorides, such as due to being immersed in or splashed by seawater during
transportation and storage.
▪ To prevent zinc embrittlement cracking, paint containing a zinc pigment shall not be applied to
stainless steel and high alloy steel surfaces.
▪ “Wet Paint” warning signs shall be posted prominently at locations where painting work in
progress, until the paint has completely dried.

7.2. Supplier’s Standard Paint


▪ Purchased standard equipment items, such as compressor, pump, motor, driver, electrical
material, instrumentation such as gauge, transmitter, actuator and Outdoor Local Panel, and
other shelf stock items may be purchased and shipped to the jobsite complying with the
painting specification of this Project. The equipment which is listed above, unless otherwise
specified can use Supplier’s standard, the Supplier should submit to COMPANY for approval.

After installation, these items shall be touched up and finish coated to match the color scheme
of the plant, if required. Before starting the touch-up, the CONTRACTOR on site shall submit
his proposed system in accordance with the existing paint system of the particular item.
▪ Major electrical equipment such as control panels, electrical cabinets may be completely shop
painted. For outdoor panels, the final coat shall be in accordance with the color scheme of the
plant. If necessary, the Supplier will include cans of adequate paints in the shipment, for on-
site touch up purposes.
▪ In any case, the CONTRACTOR remains fully responsible for the quality of these paints and
shall warrant the painted surfaces for the compatibility of the final coats applied on site with
the shop paints.

7.3. Recommended Paint Manufacturer


Painting manufacturer mentioned bellow are recommended to use in this project.

7.4. Painting Systems


Each system shall be perfectly suitable for the specific conditions of application as bellows:
▪ Site location: if marine atmosphere – class C5-according to ISO 12944
▪ Type of surface (material and possible existing coatings)
▪ Temperature range
▪ Exposure conditions (indoor, outdoor, subjected to chemical, seawater, abrasion, etc.)
▪ Whether blast cleaning is possible
▪ Whether surface is to be insulated
▪ Whether the equipment is shop or site fabricated
▪ Transport, storage and erection conditions
For each system, CONTRACTOR shall provide COMPANY with the following information:
▪ Intended purpose of the system with reference to the above defined criteria
▪ Detailed description of the painting procedure such as surface preparation and roughness,
shop coats, touch up procedure, site coats, thicknesses, etc.
▪ Supplier’ name, brand and type of each paint to be used.
▪ Full data sheets for each paint including color/code of Supplier, recommended surface
preparation and roughness, practical spreading rate, dry film thickness, wet film thickness,
surface drying time, hard drying time, re-coat able time minimum and maximum,
recommended methods of application, recommended thinners, pot life, maximum shelf life,
etc.

The painting Supplier or CONTRACTOR shall ensure that:
▪ The proposed systems meet the contractual specifications and warranties in all respects.
▪ The proposed shop paints provide a sufficient protection against corrosion during transport,
storage and erection, by taking into account e.g.: type of packing (bulk or weatherproof
package), transport conditions (deck cargo or not) expected duration between shop and site
painting.
▪ The proposed shop paints are suitable for handling and erection conditions: slinging, site
welding work, and so on.

7.5. Packing, Shipment and Storage of Paints


▪ Each paint container shall be fitted with a hermetically sealed lid. Each container shall carry
the following information:
✓ Manufacture’s name
✓ Manufacturing date and batch number
✓ Type name
✓ Shelf Life
✓ Net weight/ net volume
▪ Paint and thinner containers shall be clearly marked in accordance with the code used in the
painting procedures.
▪ For all paints comprising solvents such as benzene, acetone, etc., containers shall be
delivered carrying labels complying with safety and environmental regulations.
▪ Materials shall be stored in an enclosed, protected storage area with provisions for maintaining
the temperature between 15°C and 30°C or more restrictive temperatures as required by the
Supplier. For safety reason, the paint storage area location and condition shall be subjected
to CONTRACTOR's approval.
▪ Storage facilities shall be ready for use before first delivery of paint on site. Paint storage areas
shall be arranged to avoid any risk of soil pollution clearly marked as fire dangerous and duly
ventilated. No paint shall be used in the works if stored longer than the Supplier’s specified
shelf life.
▪ All empty or disposed paint containers shall be removed from the site by CONTRACTOR.

7.6. Execution of Works


▪ All works shall be executed in a neat and workmanlike manner and in strict accordance with
these specifications referenced in this document and the paint Supplier’s recommendations.
▪ Sandblasting and other surface preparation works will take place in an area duly devoted to
and physically independent from the painting area and in accordance to all safety regulations.

▪ No changes or deviations shall be made from the specifications without written approval from
COMPANY. In the event of discrepancies in the specifications, the CONTRACTOR will
determine the procedure to be applied.
▪ CONTRACTOR shall ensure that all Sub-contractors and Suppliers strictly comply with the
painting specifications.
▪ Unless otherwise specified in the manufacturer's recommendations, or approved by
COMPANY, no blast cleaning or painting work may be performed when any of the following
conditions occurs, or is expected to occur during painting, or drying time:
✓ air temperature drops below 5 °C.
✓ surface temperature is less than 3 C above dew point, or rises above 45°C
✓ relative humidity exceeds 80 %, or specified humidity for each paint system
✓ in general, when weather conditions (rain, sand storm, …) would spoil surface preparation
and/or paint quality.
▪ CONTRACTOR shall provide all required protections to prevent surrounding equipment from
being spoiled during cleaning, blasting and painting works. Should any damage occur due to
the works, the responsible painting Supplier/Sub-contractor shall perform all necessary
cleaning or repair works, and replace the damaged item if it proves to be impossible to restore
it to its original condition.

7.7. Handling and Storage of Painted Equipment


CONTRACTOR shall take all necessary steps in order to prevent damages to paints:
▪ Storage of equipment on wooden sleepers
▪ Placing of wooden spacers between parts of a bundle
▪ Protection of slinging points or placing of lifting lugs on equipment
▪ Use of nylon slings whenever possible
▪ Protection of painted surfaces during welding works

▪ Color scheme to be applied for the plant, as well as the color identification system for pipelines
(color for whole pipe or color bands) is given here under.
▪ Color code are only applied to painting system with Polyurethane as their final color coding
▪ Painting under insulation and high temperature painting above 100 deg C do not required color
coding.

9.2. Purpose
The purpose of this specification is to detail the lettering and other markings that indicate equipment
numbers, process fluid names and fluid directions.

▪ Before any application of paint or coating, compliance of the surface preparation with the
specification shall be checked as well as absence of dust, salt, grease, dirtiness, humidity, and
so on.
▪ Particular care shall be taken to prevent rusting and/or contamination of cleaned or primed

detrimental corrosion or recontamination occurs.
▪ Blast cleaned steel shall be primed immediately after cleaning.
▪ Containers shall be opened only when about to be used. Paints shall be homogenized in
containers by thorough mixing by mechanical mixer.
▪ The paints supplied shall have sufficient fluidity to allow for normal application. Addition of
solvent or of thinner shall be forbidden unless it is specified by the paint Supplier.
▪ Times for curing or drying times specified in relation to the ambient conditions before the
application of the coatings shall be strictly observed. The same shall apply to drying or
polymerization of finishing coat before commissioning of equipment.
▪ Surfaces that will not be accessible after erection shall be painted and inspected before
assembly. Where high resistance bolts are used, specific requirements shall apply for the
joints, according to standard practice. The joints can be painted by inorganic Zinc rich primer
to decrease anti-slip coefficient.
▪ The paint systems shall be applied in accordance with the paint Supplier requirements.
Particular attention shall be paid to thinning, mixing and curing times between subsequent
coats. The solvent rub test shall be used to verify the curing of inorganic zinc silicate primer
prior to overcoating. Test shall be performed according to ASTM D 4752, and Level 5 is
required.
▪ Any brushing shall be carried out such that a smooth and uniformly thick coat is obtained.
Deep paint or detrimental brush marks are not acceptable. Paint shall be worked into all
crevices and corners. Runs or sags shall be brushed out before drying.
▪ All areas such as external corners and edges, welds, bolts, nuts and interstices (excluding
galvanized surfaces) shall receive a "stripe" coat prior to application of the specified coat
(excluding with inorganic zinc silicate primer) to ensure that these areas have at least the
minimum specified film thickness and to ensure continuity of the coating.
▪ All areas that will be subject to welding after painting shall be masked after blast cleaning.
Masking shall be made with suitable adhesive tape and shall extend at least 50 mm on all
sides of the intended weld area. All masking shall be removed a prior to start welding.
▪ The contact place of steel structure’s joints by bolts shall not be painted. It should be protected
with adhesive tapes after blasted
▪ Coating shall not be conducted:
- When the surfaces temperatures are less than 3°C above the air dew point.
- When the relative humidity of the air is above 85% for epoxy coatings and 90% for zinc
silicate coating (subjected to Supplier’s recommendation compliance) or when there is a
likelihood of a change in weather conditions within two hours after application which would
result in temperatures below those specified (between +10°C and +49°C and/or Supplier’s
recommendations) or deposition of moisture in the form of rain or condensation upon the
surface.
▪ Nameplates shall be suitably masked before blast cleaning to protect them from blasting
abrasive and paint.
▪ The cured coatings shall be visually free of pinholes, voids, bubbles, mud cracking, and other
"holidays".

▪ Any inaccessible surfaces for proper coating application and/or inspection shall be coated prior
to final assembly. Specifically, flange and bolt holes shall be coated prior to final installation.
▪ Prior to apply a succeeding coat, all coatings shall be allowed to dry at site ambient conditions
for at least the minimum time specified by the coating Supplier and no longer than the
maximum time for site ambient conditions before overcoating. No coating shall be applied over
a previous coating that is not thoroughly dry, except when a wet on wet coating is
recommended.
▪ Damaged areas of primed surfaces with inorganic zinc shall be painted, after cleaning, with
one coat of zinc rich epoxy primer and the initial system achieved in accordance with
specifications.
▪ Outdoor surface preparation and coating shall be conducted during day light hours (not
applicable to enclosed shop).
▪ Surfaces that are not to be coated shall be properly protected from abrasives blasting and
coating. Any paint deposited on the surfaces shall be removed carefully.
▪ Determination of thickness as per the method in SSPC-PA2, Double 90% control, i.e. the dry
film thickness of more than 90% inspection lot points is not less than the specific film thickness,
and the dry film thickness of other lot points is not less than 90% of specific film thickness.

10.2. Welding Primer


▪ Welding primer, if used, shall be limited to a 20μm DFT coat, and must be fully compatible with
the welding procedure.
▪ For structures subjected to important dynamic loads, welding primer is not allowed; in such
case, the surface within 50 mm (2”) of the joint to be welded shall not be painted.
▪ Painting Equipment
▪ It should be by means of airless spraying. Use of brushes is not allowed, unless approved by
COMPANY for particular cases, such as the place where can’t apply spraying. It should apply
pre-construction primer before painting.
▪ Spray equipment specifications shall be submitted to COMPANY's approval. The primer coat
shall not be applied by rollers.

10.3. Painting Equipment


▪ It should be by means of airless spraying. Use of brushes is not allowed, unless approved by
COMPANY for particular cases, such as the place where can’t apply spraying. It should apply

10.4. Galvanized Steel Structure


For hot dip galvanized steel, wash it with appropriate conditioned water to remove all salts and dirt.
Hot-dip galvanizing shall be carried out in accordance with ISO 1461 standard excepted for piping
where hot-dip galvanizing shall be carried out in accordance with ASTM A123/ASTM 153. Thickness
will not be less than 85 μm and not over 200 μm.
Carbon steel anchoring items partially embedded in concrete or blockwork shall be hot dip
galvanized and protected at the junction by a strip of approved alkali resistant mastic filler.
For structural steel: If bolts and nuts are hot dip galvanized, they can be painted like the structure.
If they are Sendsimir galvanized, or sherardized, they must be treated like carbon steel.

10.5. Silicone Heat Resisting Paints


Silicone heat resisting paints are to be of self-curing type; in the contrary, the temperature of the
first coat shall be brought to a minimum temperature of 200 °C before applying the second coat or
the first coat shall be allowed to air dry for 24 hours, following paint Supplier technical specifications.

10.6. Zinc Rich Primer


The Zinc content of Zinc rich primer should be more than 80%; if it is Zinc rich epoxy primer, the
Zinc content should be more than 75%.

11. REPAIR
11.1. General Repair
▪ Wherever possible, coating defects or damages shall be repaired such that the finished coating
complies with this specification.
▪ Any repair procedure not in compliance with this specification shall be submitted for approval,
in writing to COMPANY prior to commencement of the work.
▪ The procedure shall take into consideration all surfaces preparation requirements to ensure
that full substrate and inter-coat adhesion is achieved.

12. SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS


12.1. Special Requirements For Substrate Design
▪ The Supplier of the material has to prepare edges and welds before painting so they are
without any sharpness in compliance with ISO8501-1-supplement part 3. Moreover, edges
and welds shall receive an extra strip coat of primer so as to obtain the uniform DFT all over
the equipment surfaces.
▪ Brackets, clips, nozzles, man ways and other attachments which protrude, like through the
insulation or insulated equipment, shall be painted as the insulated equipment to obtain
uniform DFT all over the equipment surface.
▪ Water stagnation area, crevices, space between steel sheets are not tolerated; they are to be
avoided by design or seal welded.

12.2. Special Requirements For Paints And Paintng Systems


▪ Unless otherwise approved by COMPANY, all the different paints forming part of a painting
system shall be supplied by the same Vendor.
▪ CONTRACTOR shall not change the source of supply of any paint, or its composition, without
first obtaining the approval of Company.
▪ Colors or shades of the successive coats of one painting system shall differ sufficiently to allow
clear identification of the successive coats.
▪ Color shall be factory prepared.

13. INSPECTION AND TESTS


13.1. General
▪ CONTRACTOR shall perform all necessary controls, inspections and tests in order to ensure
that the painting works carried out in Vendor’s shops and on site, including those executed by
Sub-contractors and equipment Vendors, comply with the specifications.
▪ CONTRACTOR shall complete the data sheet form ISO 12944-7 for each equipment. Quality
control shall fill another data sheet after each step of the paint system, and data sheet shall
remain attached to the equipment all along its elaboration.

13.2. Paint Quality Control


▪ CONTRACTOR shall implement their own Quality System and shall comply with ISO 12944,
if it is applicable.
▪ Documentation to verify above must be available from the CONTRACTOR.
▪ Analytical "fingerprint data" shall be provided to enable checking of material supplied on site
against the original Paint Supplier reference.
This shall consist of:
✓ Specific Gravity (S.G.)
✓ Mass Solid
✓ Ash Content
✓ IR Trace on Binder
▪ Furthermore, for each paint, CONTRACTOR shall keep for warranty period a set of control
samples (at least 1 liter of each paint) at Company's disposal.
▪ Both at shop and on-site, Company shall be free to perform analyses of samples taken from
the complete supply or possibly from each batch, as well as from raw materials used.
▪ COMPANY may reject the batch considered, stop the works, and/or have the rejected paint
removed from already coated surfaces, if analyses reveal data does not comply with the
specifications.
▪ Inspection and controls done by COMPANY does not modify or reduce the responsibility of
the Contractor, which remains entire.

13.3. Inspection Of Paint Application


▪ Shop Paints for Shop Fabrication Items
✓ Shop paints will be subjected to spot inspections by COMPANY. The inspections will
include control of visual aspect, surface preparation, thickness and adhesion of paint, as
well as sampling of paints for analyses.
✓ CONTRACTOR shall perform the necessary touch-up to the paints after tests (e.g. after
cross-cut tests).
✓ Should the inspections prove that the paints on the procured equipment and/or materials
do not comply with the specification; the Sub-Contractor / Vendors shall carry out, before
shipment, the required corrective works in accordance with a repair procedure approved
by COMPANY. If necessary, the surfaces shall be completely blast cleaned and repainted.
✓ Shop paints shall further be inspected on site before commencement of painting works.
This inspection should reveal that the paints do not comply with the specifications, or
damage to shop paints or corrosion exceeds standard of good practice, COMPANY may

reject the paints and require repair works or complete blast cleaning and repainting of the
equipment, as deemed necessary.
▪ Painting Sample for Shop Fabrication Items
A painting sample shall be prepared by Supplier in accordance with the following, prior to start
painting work:
✓ Sample Plate
Dimensions : 75 mm x 150 mm x 2 to 3 mm thick
Material : Hot or cold rolled steel plate
✓ Preparation of Painting Sample

Painting sample shall be made for each painting system, using the same methods and color as
for the actual painting.
Site Painting Works :
✓ An inspection procedure will be agreed upon between CONTRACTOR and COMPANY for
the painting works to be carried out on site.
✓ The inspections shall include, but not limited to:
- Inspection of the painting equipment, blast cleaning and paint material
- Inspection of surface preparation and roughness before each coat
- Inspection of touch up paint before next coat
- Inspection of each coat before application of the next one (visual aspect, thickness)
- Final inspection and acceptance of the painting works (thickness, visual aspect and
adhesion tests)
✓ Further to theses inspections, the performed works shall be daily inspected for quality of
workmanship and compliance with specifications. Painting daily report format states in
Attachment A.
✓ CONTRACTOR may propose any inspection procedure minimizing the disturbance in his
works provided the following conditions are fulfilled:

- COMPANY is to be kept informed, on a daily basis, of the works which will be performed.
No work may be started without prior notification to COMPANY.
- CONTRACTOR takes immediate corrective action when a remark is notified by
COMPANY.
✓ Contractor issues, and submits to COMPANY inspection reports and daily sheets recording
weather conditions, works carried out, inspection results and possible remarks as per
Attachment A.

13.4. Testing Methods And Acceptance Criteria


The tests shall be executed in accordance with the ISO Standards taking into account the following
specifications:
▪ Surface preparation
The surface - degree of cleanliness and roughness - shall be inspected immediately before paint
is applied; pictorial standards of ISO 8501 all parts shall be used as reference for acceptance.
Absence of dust, grease, shall also be checked.
▪ Film thickness
✓ DFT on steel surfaces shall be measured by magnetic or electromagnetic dry film gauge
(Mikrotest, Elcometre or approved equivalent) in conformity with ISO 2808 standard.
Thickness foils for calibration of the DFT gauge shall be certified.
✓ Wedge-cut measuring equipment may be used for other materials or in case of dispute.
✓ Wet film measurement shall be carried out on routing basis by the painter's foreman by
means of comb or wheel gauges.
✓ Dry film thickness gauges must be calibrated on a surface representative of the surface
profile to be painted and not on smooth steel.
✓ The average of the measurements must be comprised between 100 and 120% of the
specified value, with less than 5% of the readings outside these limits. No reading shall be
less than 80% or more than 150% of the specified value, or if otherwise stated in the specific
paint system (Attachment B).
✓ For paint system SS-ILT, no reading below 120μm DFT shall be accepted.
▪ Adhesion
✓ Cross-cut tests shall be performed in order to assess adhesion of the paint.
✓ Tests shall be carried out in accordance with ASTM D3359 Test A. No result worse than 4 A
will be accepted.
✓ After adhesion test, Contractor shall perform the necessary touch-up to the paints.
▪ Paint Composition
Paint shall be accepted provided:
✓ Each constituent complies with data sheet specifications.
✓ The percentage content of each constituent does not differ by more than 3% from specified
value as per Supplier approved data sheet.
▪ Other tests
In case of doubt concerning the paint quality and/or the painting system, or if no satisfactory
testing certificate has been obtained from CONTRACTOR, the COMPANY shall be entitled to
require any test, as deemed necessary by taking into account the exposure conditions of the

painted equipment (resistance to heat, chemicals, seawater spray). These tests shall be
performed at CONTRACTOR’S costs in an approved laboratory.

14. WRAPPING
• All surface preparation and wrapping operations shall be performed by and under the supervision of
personnel skilled in the application of wrapping materials specified. CONTRACTOR shall provide all
the skilled personnel required for execution of this work
• All tape and primer materials shall be kept out of direct sunlight during transportation and storage.
Tape and primer materials shall be stored in a clean, cool, and dry warehouse until required.
• The Wrapping System shall consist of primer applied to bare steel, one or more layers of inner wrap
tape and one layer of outer wrap coating.

15. WARRANTIES
The warranty period shall be of at least 5 years. This period starts for each item at the date of the
Mechanical Completion of Project.

16. SAFETY
16.1. General
▪ All safety rules and regulations of applicable Indonesian national and local laws and insurance
underwriter regulations shall be adhered to in the storing, handling, use and application of
paints, thinners, solvents, etc.
▪ The coating Supplier’s health and safety instructions on the use of their products provided on
data-sheets and warning labels shall be fully understood and complied with before any work is
undertaken. Paint safety data sheets will have to be available on the painting site.

16.2. Fire Hazards


▪ Smoking, open fires, or sparks will not be permitted in confined areas that are being painted or
have recently been painted and are emitting flammable solvents.

16.3. Ventilation
▪ Ventilation in an amount to provide safe working conditions shall be supplied to the workmen
at all times.
▪ Confined areas that previously contained flammable or volatile materials shall be purged and
ventilated until the vapors will be less than the maximum allowable concentrations.

16.4. Protective Clothing


Workers shall wear suitable protective clothing and gloves to prevent toxic substances contacting
the skin and also wear footwear, which will not damage painted surfaces (as a rubber-soled shoes)

16.5. Blasting
During blasting and air-spray-painting work, workers shall wear safety goggles, suitable protective
clothing, a face mask and gloves to protect against abrasives, dust and spray moist.

Note-3: To remove rust, dirt, dust, chloride contamination and other detrimental foreign matter from austenitic stainless steel surface.
Note-4: Shop weld portions which require painting shall be painted with the following painting systems depend on the substrate individually.
1) Carbon Steel : To be primed only after surface preparation in accordance with SSPC-SP 10.
2) Galvanized Steel: To be primed only after surface preparation in accordance with SSP-SP 11.
3) Austenitic Stainless Steel (type 304//316): To be painted up to intermediate coat only after surface preparation in accordance with SSPC-SP 7.
