I. CONTEXT AND RATIONALE

In Valladolid National High School, specifically in the Senior High school department, the

students and the teachers play an important role in the process of assembling meaning

about works of art, offering their personal reflections, experiences, opinions and

interpretations. One of the foundations of 21st Century Contemporary Art’s Philosophy is to

allow learners to present their work in their own words and to encourage their fellow

students to consider, react, and respond to visual art (AN del Mundo- Angeles 2022 ).

However, not all students can easily adapt to the demand of the curriculum. For Grade 12

SMAW students, they find this subject difficult and unnecessary. Based on the first quarter

results, only 6 out of 36 students or 16.67 % passed their performance tasks. It was found

out based on FGD (Focus Group Discussion) that they lack such talents to perform these

activities and that they are ashamed in performing in front of their classmates. This

scenario motivates the researchers to focus on the problem.

In comparison to other traditional methods of activities and trainings such as lectures and

workshops, simulation- based activity has proven to be more effective in engaging learners

and helping them retain information for better learning. Simulation – based learning

significantly improved student’s self- efficacy regarding skills learning and the skills

performance ( HH Lin 2015 ). Moreover, learning becomes more interesting and interactive

when it is projected on screen especially in form of videos as it engage learners through

multiple senses, which not only creates a more stipulating experience but also improves

memory retention ( Hemmer, 2021 ). With these , the researchers came up with this

strategy to make the participants enjoy while learning.

II. ACTION RESEARCH QUESTIONS

This action research aims to implement video-based activity simulation as in

intervention to improve the level of evaluative skills of 12 students of Valladolid National

High School.

1. What is the level of evaluative skills of Grade 12 SMAW students before, during, and

after the video-based activity simulation intervention?

2. How can the video-based activity simulation intervention be used to improve the level of

evaluative skills of Grade 12 SMAW students?

3. What are the remarkable experiences of Grade 12 SMAW students after the

implementation of video-based activity simulation intervention to improve the level of

evaluative skills?

4. What the remarkable experiences of teacher-practitioners after the implementation of

video-based activity simulation intervention to improve the level of evaluative skills of 12

SMAW students?

5. What action plan can be crafted out of the findings of the study?
III. PROPOSED INNOVATION, INTERVENTION AND STRATEGY

This proposed innovation is a video- based simulated activities. This intervention will help

the identified Smaw students to see first the correct procedures on how they are going to

create their output as part of evaluation process. Thus, the combination of videos and

simulations in digital learning environments is a promising educational technology tool for

teacher education (Kramer et al, 2020 ).

In order for the identified SMAW students to get high scores in their performance task, they

will be given the following suggested activities that one way or another will assess their

level of evaluative skills in Contemporary Arts.

A. Music- (make a steel musical instrument)

B. Dance- (Perform Dance accompanied by improvised metal instrument)

C. Theatre - (Create a theatrical production designs using materials made of metal)

D. Painting - (Apply different designs on metal)

E. Industrial Arts - (Construct metal plant stand of your own design)

IV. ACTION RESEARCH METHODS

a. Participants/ or sources of data or information

The participants in this study are Grade 12 SMAW students of Valladolid National High

School, 28 males and 2 females with age range of 16- 18, residents of Valladolid Negros

Occidental. They were identified as LOW in the performance task results during the First

Quarter in which the researchers used the Purposive Sampling technique.

The researchers of this study were from Valladolid Negros Occidental teaching both in

Secondary and two of which are BSED PEHM and one is BPED both teaching MAPEH

related subjects for more over 5- 20 years in service.

b. Data Gathering Method

The data for research problem number 1 will be collected based on the records on the level

of performance of identified Smaw students; PERFORMANCE ASSESSMENT tool in

determining evaluative skills (poor, average, high). Meanwhile, research problem numbers

2, 3 and 4 will be collected through focused group discussion.

c. Ethical Issues

All participants will be given informed consent for inclusion before they participate in the

study. The study will be conducted in accordance with the DM 08 s. 2022 “ADOPTING

TOOLS TO IMPROVE QUALITY MANAGEMENT OF COMPLETED RESEARCH AT THE

DEPARTMENT OF EDUCATION “.

d. Data Analysis Plan

The following statistical measures were employed in analyzing and interpreting the data

collected from the study:

a) mean and mean difference and;

b) thematic analysis

V. ACTION RESEARCH WORK PLAN AND TIMELINES

The study will be conducted on the First Quarter of the First Semester of next school year

starting August to November.

Intervention will be conducted first week of December

After the measurement and questionnaires were collected, the researcher has the

consolidation, tabulation, and analyzation of the data for two days using the Statistical

formula. Making conclusion/s based on the result of the study

The result of the study will be presented during the in- service –training for teachers on

August 5-9, 2024

The completed research will be presented on or before May 2024

The findings will also be presented to all school research coordinators during the quarterly

district research conference, so that they will be able to find action open the research

issues that may arise. Research will also be included as priority target of teachers in

drafting their RPMS. This material will also be submitted to the District of Valladolid for

consolidation and pre- evaluation.
