Essay Unit 1

It is a common fact that over the years humanity has improved to a significant extent. Our
generation has achieved things that we wouldn’t even dream of accomplishing a few years
ago, and we continue to aspire for more. One of the things that has caught the eye of a vast
majority of the population is the concept of exploring space, and more specifically the
possibility of alien life on a different planet. However, such ideas don’t come without
criticism. There are quite a few opposing views, considering space exploration a complete
waste of time and deem the resources and effort dedicated to the matter unworthy. Which
point of view should we support, though? Let’s take some time to analyze the information at
hand.

We will begin with going over the numerous advantages of space exploration. One
indisputable fact is that, with the knowledge provided by researchers on the matter, we can
uncover many more truths behind the universe and its origin. The matter of how everything
was created, the space-time continuum… These are all human constructed theories, created
exclusively by analyzing facts and information, and reaching a logical conclusion. Without
space exploration, such theories wouldn’t exist, and we wouldn’t have the ability to hold
scientific debates over the creation of literally everything we know. The second fact conveys
not with what we already know, but what we may uncover. Due to the continuous
improvements and innovative ideas associated with technology, we have the ability of
constantly exploring and documenting new findings in space. There have been numerous
organizations created that dedicate themselves to this cause and are even able to disprove
some of the most controversial debates in history. It is still unknown what the universe may
hold, but whatever that is, shouldn’t we put our minds into uncovering the truth and
bringing it to our knowledge?

However, even something so well thought of has its disadvantages, Firstly, the amount of
money required to make feats such as space travel possible, and used to create machines
and devices which are able to withstand the excruciatingly different climate there is
immeasurable. If we could spend that money on things that would improve our society, such
as medical researches or even creations of new buildings, we would have evolved as people
and improved much more. Furthermore, in order to explore the entirety of space, we need
copious amounts of time. In this time, how can we be sure that things won’t change? If we’re
giving money now only for discoveries to be made thousands of years later, then would it
just be a waste of resources?

The topic of space exploration is certainly a double edged sword, with both benefits and
drawbacks. It is in our hands to know as much as possible about where we live at, however it
is in the eye of the beholder whether or not something like this is beneficial or a waste.
