Note: Basic allowable stresses as quoted in ASME B31.1 / B31.3, or derived from the lower of 1/3 UTS & 2/3 yield strength
BASIS OF CALCULATION

Calculations are generally in accordance with ASME B31.1 / B31.3

Calculations assume tube OD at max toleranced limit and wall thickness (t) at min toleranced limit.
Tubes are assumed to be thin wall where (nom. OD / nom t) >20
Tubes are assumed to be thick wall where (nom. OD / nom t) =<20
Design pressure for thin wall tubes is calculated from the equation, stress = PD / 2t
Design pressure for thick wall tubes is calculated from the equation, stress = P x (OD 2 + ID2) / (OD2 - ID2)
Max working pressure = design pressure / 1.1
Test pressure = design pressure x 1.5
Basic allowable stress values are as quoted in ASME B31.1 / B31.3
Where a basic allowable stress value is not quoted it may be assumed to be the lower of 1/3 UTS or 2/3 yield strength of the material
Where a corrosion allowance (%) is included, the wall thickness is assumed to be reduced by a reduction of the OD

USE OF CHARTS

Data is required to be entered in all green boxes

Answers are displayed in orange boxes
Nominal wall thickness and nominal tube OD should be entered in first two boxes
OD tolerance (to give the maximum OD) should be entered as the OD tolerance
Wall tolerance (to give the minimum wall thickness) should be entered as the wall tolerance
Basic allowable stresses as listed in ASME B31.1 or B31.3 should be entered unless otherwise calculated by note 10
An additional safety factor may be added if required, but should normally be set to 1
A corrosion allowance in terms of percentage may be entered if required, i.e. a corrosion allowance of 50% means
% of the tube wall thickness is lost.
