Starter: Spot the Odd One Out

• Choose a row, column or diagonal of 3 pictures

• Choose one of the 3 pictures and decide which is the
odd one out, and give a reason for your choice.

Help: Stretch:
Discuss ideas with your How many rows, columns
partner. can you complete
(selecting an odd one out
and giving a reason) ?

Learning Objectives : Chemical
Reactions
Name things that indicate a Today’s Question:
chemical reaction has
happened. What happens when we fry
an egg and why?

Record observations of
Chemical and Physical
reactions.

Compare and contrast

chemical and physical
reactions.
Discuss : What is a chemical
reaction?
• Can you give any examples of
chemical reactions?
• Do you think you have
encountered any in your day so
far?
Help: Stretch:
Key words…chemical reaction, How does a physical change differ ?
reversible, atoms, catalyst, Can you give any examples?
temperature, sound, physical
change
Evidence for a Chemical
Reaction
Some chemical reactions are obvious
Like explosions and fires
Some are not quite so easy to spot
How can we tell if a reaction has
taken place?
Evidence for a Chemical Reaction
A colour change is one of the most obvious signs of a
chemical reaction
e.g. Your toast turns black when you burn it
Below is a picture of the colour change an alkali
produces in a titration (see later in the course)
Evidence for a Chemical Reaction
An energy change
The reaction heats up
Or
Cools down
A flame gives off light
So does a light stick
A bang is sound energy
Evidence for a Chemical
Reaction
A gas given off

Some reactions make a gas as a

product
If it started in a liquid you will see
bubbles
Evidence for a Chemical
Reaction
A solid appears or disappears in a solution

When magnesium reacts with acid hydrogen gas is given off

(bubbles)
The magnesium seems to disappear
Actually it becomes dissolved in the solution
Review: Chemical or physical?
Observations: How do we
know we have a chemical
reaction ?
1. Colour Change
2. Bubbles made
3. Change in temperature
4. Smell
5. Sound made

Help: Stretch:
Think of your five senses, How would your observations differ
for a physical reaction?
See, hear, smell, taste, touch

Summary Questions:
Chemical or Physical
Reaction?
Answer in full sentences …
1. Describe what a chemical reaction is.
2. Describe what a physical reaction is.
3. State some examples of chemical reactions.
4. State some examples of physical reactions.
 If you add two substances together sometimes
you get a chemical reaction. This is when a new
substance is made.
 It is very difficult to reverse the reaction and
get the original substances back.
 Signs that a chemical reaction has taken place
include a change in colour, heat being given off or
bubbles of gas being made.
Plenary : Identify all the physical and
chemical changes in the picture.

Stretch:
Justify why you made that decision (chemical/physical)?
