Football is more than just a sport. It is an invaluable teacher. In teaching young
man to cooperate with his fellows in the practice field and in scheduled games, it also
shows him the necessity of teamwork in society. It prepares him to be a better citizen and
person.
The novice player first learns that football is not a one- man game that he is but one
member of an eleven- man team, and that in every play, either offensive or defensive, he
has a particular job to do. If his task is to block the opposing right end, that job must be
done. And he must do it alone, for every other man on the team has his own assignment
in the play. The ends, tacklers, guards, backfield men, and goalie must do their individual
tasks if the play is to succeed.
Whenever football is played, the players learn the invaluable lesson that only by
cooperation of each man can the team win. It is a lesson they do not forget on the field.

Tabitha opened the newspaper and spread it across the length of the kitchen table in what
had become a morning routine. Job searching was not necessarily pleasant, but it was
almost mandatory at this point. Despite the bleak unemployment rate in her city, Tabitha
was determined to get a jump on finding a part-time summer job, so she spent each
morning reading through columns of classified ads. All of her friends did their job
searching online, so Tabitha hoped that by going the old-fashioned route, she might find
hidden opportunities.
As she read through ads and considered the responsibilities, paycheck and hours that
went with each potential job, she could not help but think about the advice her Aunt Sarah
had given her last week.
"Stop perusing those newspaper ads," she had recommended, "and just go into business
for yourself. You are an incredible musician and you could make a decent amount by
spending your summer teaching other kids how to play the piano or the guitar."
Tabitha had to admit the idea of self-employment had its appeal. She spent a lot of time
weighing the pros and cons of having her own business opposed to working for someone
else. If she spent the summer teaching music lessons, she could largely determine her
daily schedule, charge the rates she deemed appropriate, wear regular clothes instead of
a uniform, and take on as many -Â or as few- students as she wanted. On the other hand,
having a regular job meant a regular paycheck, rather than one that might vary
significantly depending on the number of students she might - or might not -get. Making
the choice between the two options was challenging, but Tabitha had to admit that not
looking through the ads every morning would be a definite pro!

DIRECTIONS:

For various reasons, I believe that morning recess needs to be extended because it does
not allow students enough time to take care of their basic needs. Some people may
disagree because they feel that this will decrease instructional and learning time. However,
I believe that a longer recess will allow students time to drink water and go to the
bathroom. Also, students will have time to play team sports. Finally, the most important
reason is students will have enough time to eat their healthy snacks. Consequently, I will
argue that an extended recess benefits students’ learning.
First, students need more time to leave to the bathroom and drink water. In fact, with a
short recess, students interrupt the teacher and other students when they leave during
recess time. Also, when they do leave during class, they miss the lessons and the teacher’s
instructions. For example, a student on my project team left to the bathroom when the
teacher was explaining how to do an activity; when he came back, I had to explain
everything again to him and we did not have enough time to finish our project. Therefore,
if students have a longer recess, they will have adequate time to drink water and go to the
bathroom, and not miss the teacher’s instructions.
Second, with a longer recess period, students are able to play team sports. In fact, students
will build and develop team skills by playing team sports. In addition, students can relieve
stress and energize themselves. For instance, after a long period of work, students get
bored and sleepy and they have a difficult time listening and following directions. However,
after they have had time to unwind during recess, they are more alert and readier to learn
in class. So, to improve student attention in the classroom and build team skills, students
need a longer recess to play team sports.
Third, students need more time to eat their nutritious snacks. Actually, when students
are hungry, they pay less attention to the teacher’s instructions because they are thinking
of food instead. Furthermore, when students get hungry, they begin to fidget and disrupt
others. For example, when I am not able to eat my snack during recess and it is time to
go to class, the last thing I am thinking about is learning. Therefore, students need more
time to eat their snacks during recess so that they can focus more on the class instruction
instead of their grumbling stomachs.
Consequently, I believe that a longer recess will benefit students and will improve their
learning because they will be able to drink water, go to the bathroom, play sports and eat
their snacks. In order to solve this solution, I suggest taking five minutes from lunch and
adding them to the morning recess, allowing instructional minutes to remain unchanged.
The effect of my solution would be that students would not have the need to leave the
room during instructional time and they would be better prepared mentally and physically
during class time. For these reasons, I conclude that longer recess will improve student
learning.

THE KEYS TO PHYSICAL FITNESS.

Many people who want to be physically fit try the faddy diets they see in infomercial
exercise programs and depend on miracle fat-burning supplements without much
success. This is because all of these are unrealistic about what it really takes to become
physically fit. These are the real steps to fitness. The first step is strength training.
Strength training builds muscle, which helps increase energy levels and improve posture.
In addition to building muscle strength through strength training, regular cardiovascular
exercise such as running, walking, or cycling is essential. Cardiovascular training burns
fat and strengthens the heart. But regular exercise will only be effective if people pay
attention to diet and nutrition. A diet that avoids sugars, junk foods, and high-fat meats
and is high in fruits, grains, and low-fat meats will provide the body with the energy it
needs without weight gain. As much as we might wish it, the “secret” of physical fitness
can’t be found in a bottle. Being physically fit is a matter of regular exercise and good
eating habits.
