There are both endless opportunities and
countless challenges in the information age. As
an all- encompassing element in social
relations, politics, economy, and education,
media and information presents opportunities
and challenges in all sectors of society. Its
power, however, lies not in the impossible

The Economics of Media: Ratings
and Revenues

This can be explained in the simple


equation:
RATINGS = REVENUE
• RATING- is a colloquial term for audience
measurement that influences timing, placements,
and markets for media content and advertising. It
determines the number of people who watches,
listens to or reads a particular media content.
• REVENUES- is the amount of money brought by
advertisers to the media industry.
The Opportunity
• The Philippine media is a great asset in the country’s economy.
• In fact, the Philippine Star reported that in the year 2010 alone,
the creative or copyright- based industries(industries engaged in
creation, production and manufacturing, performance, broadcast,
communication and exhibition, or distribution of sales of works
and other protected subject matter) contributed P661.23 billion
(14.05 billion USD) to the Philippine economy.
• This makes up an estimated 7.34% in the country’s gross
domestic product (GDP), creating hundreds of thousands jobs for
Filipinos.

dictionary, it is the knowledge, skill, and
understanding that you get from attending a
school, college or university.

becoming a trend.
• Vast network of information and contributors.
• Convenience, abundance and interconnections.

The impact of the media on an element in


politics:
Best illustrated during election period in democratic political setups.
• - Media features candidate profiles, host political debates, gives updates on the
fluctuation of polls and reports pertinent news on electoral campaigns and issues

affecting the results of the election itself.

- The government has given little support to efforts that will help
strengthen the media industry.
- Weak enforcement of certain laws to protect the media exposes them
to threats that could have a damaging repercussions on the industry.
