o2 Arguments in favor of Democracy.

o3 Democracy in Broader sense.

Arguments against democracy

 In democracy, frequent changes in leadership leads to

instability and may also affect the governments efficiency
 Democracy is all about political competition and power
play. There is no place for morality.
 Involvement of many people delays the decision making.
 Sometimes elected leaders do not know the best interest of
the people which leads to bad decisions.
 Being based on electoral competition, democracy leads to
corruption.
 Ordinary people do not know what is good for them. They
can make mistakes in decision making.
Democracy: Only a form of government.

 Democracy is not a magical solution for all the problems.

 It is a form of government only and ensures that people take
their own decisions.
 It is not a guarantee that their decisions will be good. People
can make mistakes.
Is democracy better than other forms of government?

 Responding to the needs of the people i.e. more accountable

form of government.
 Example of china’s famine of 1958-61 china’s government
was not so accountable to the people. They did not respond
to the needs of the people.
 Democracy improves the quality of decision making –
Democracy based on consultations and discussions
which reduces the chances of rash or irresponsible
decisions.
 Democracy provides a method to deal with differences and
conflicts resulted from various diversities different religions,
different languages, different regions, different castes, foods,
dress, culture etc.
 In democracy, no one is permanent winner and no one is a
permanent loser. Therefore, people can live together in a
country like India.
What democracy does to the citizens?

 Enhances the dignity of citizens.

 Democracy is based on the principle of political equality.
 People are not subjects of a ruler, they are the ruler
themselves.
 Poorest and the least educated has the same status as the
rich and the educated people.
 Allows us to correct its own mistakes.
 Either the rulers have to change their decisions, or the ruler
themselves can be changed.
Broader meaning of democracy

 Representative democracy – It is practically impossible

for the people to sit together and take a collective
decision.
 No time, no desire, no skill to take part in all the
decisions.
