PROBLEM SET NO. 1

PRELIM PERIOD
INSTRUCTIONS:
1. DO NOT WRITE anything in this questionnaire.
2. Show your COMPLETE SOLUTION to each problem.
3. Round off the final answers to 2 DECIMAL PLACES.
4. ONLY the front side of the paper will be checked.

PART I. DIFFERENTIAL CALCULUS (5 points each)

3𝑥 2 +𝑥
1. You are given the function 𝑓(𝑥) = . Find the value of f’(x).
3𝑥 2 −𝑥
2. Find the slope of the curve 𝑥 2 + 𝑦 2 − 6𝑥 + 10𝑦 + 5 = 0 at (1, 0).

3. The motion of a particle is described by the equation 𝐷 = 20𝑡 + , where D is in meters an t in seconds. At what
𝑡+1
speed is it moving after 4 seconds?
4. The number of newspaper copies produced from 1995 to 2002 is given by
𝐶 = 50𝑡 2 − 200𝑡 + 10000
where t is the number of years after 1995. Find the minimum copies of newspapers produced.
5. A closed cylindrical tank has a capacity of 85 𝑚3 . Find the minimum total surface area of the tank.
6. Find the curvature of the curve 𝑦 2 − 4𝑥 = 0 at (4,4).
7. The motion of a body moving vertically upward is expressed as ℎ = 100𝑡 − 16.1𝑡 2 , where h is the height in feet
and t is the time in seconds. What is the velocity of the body after 2 seconds?
8. Water is running into a hemispherical bowl having a radius of 10 cm at a constant rate of 3 𝑐𝑚3 /𝑚𝑖𝑛. When the
water is h cm deep, the water level is rising at the rate of 0.0149 cm/min. What is the value of h?
9. A Ferris wheel with a radius of 10 m has its center 12 m above the ground. When a passenger is 17 m above the
ground, he is moving at a vertical rate of 1.81 m/s. Find the angular velocity of the Ferris wheel.
10. Find the shortest distance from the point (6,0) to the curve 𝑥 2 − 𝑦 2 = 4.

PART II. INTEGRAL CALCULUS (5 points each)

1. Evaluate ∫1 ∫0 (𝑥 2 + 𝑦 2 )𝑑𝑥 𝑑𝑦
2. The acceleration of a particle is given by 𝑎 = 2 + 12𝑡, where t is in minutes and a in m/min². The velocity of the
particle is 11 m/min after 1 minute. Find its velocity after 2 minutes.
3. What is the area bounded by the curve 𝑥 2 = −9𝑦 and the line 𝑦 + 1 = 0?
4. Find the area enclosed by the curve 𝑥 2 + 8𝑦 + 16 = 0, the x-axis, the y-axis, and the line 𝑥 − 4 = 0.
