Time’s up! How well did you do? Did you

get all the correct answers?

Well done!
Teacher on cam In the previous lesson we talked about the
different types of earthquakes. We
discussed ways to reduce earthquake risk,
and we learned how to recognize signs of an
impending tsunami.

GFX pop up objectives For today’s lesson we will interpret different

earthquake hazard maps
1. Know the different types of earthquake.
2. Understand ways to reduce earthquake risk.
3. Interpret earthquake hazard map.
4. Recognize signs of an impending tsunami.

Teacher on cam What do you think is the importance of

understanding hazard maps?

As Senior high school students, I am sure

you have seen hazard maps posted in
noticeable areas around your school.

Have you taken time to read it?

Well, you should. We never know when

disaster will strike and nothing beats being
alert and prepared for it.
GFX pop up image
Hazard maps provide important information
that could help us mitigate or lessen the
impacts of disaster.

Map interpretation is the process of looking

at the map in order to be guided to a
direction or place of safety.

Hazard maps are practical tools to promote

Note: sample only risk awareness. It can also be use for
designing evacuation procedures, and for
deciding the locations of evacuation facilities
and shelters.

Hazard maps should be easy to understand

and easy to use for purposes of panic-free
evacuation.

Posting hazards maps in the community and

encouraging people to read and understand
it will go a long way in reducing negative
impacts during disasters.

Teacher on cam An easy to understand map should include

distance, to show and guide you how far or
GFX pop up image near the safe place is.

**Note: this is only a sample image

It must also have direction.

GFX pop up image
This is a compass rose and this shows
principal directions printed on a map.

Most maps contain an arrow marked with the

letter ‘N’ at the upper right hand corner. This
arrow shows the northern direction. It is called
the north line.

When you know the north, you can find out

other directions, for example east, west and
south.

GFX pop up text “cardinal points” when There are four major directions, North, South,
mentioned East and West. They are called cardinal points.

GFX pop up graphics And a map should also have symbols.

It is not possible to draw on a map the actual

shape and size of buildings, houses, roads,
bridges, trees, or other important land features
of a community so they are shown using
symbols.

Maps have a universal language that can be

understood by all.

There is an international agreement regarding

the use of these symbols.
*Note: sample only
These are called conventional symbols.

Teacher on cam Now look at your screen. Here you will see
a map from PHIVOLCS.

GFX pop up image Learn to interpret the map by giving

attention to the color codes and the scalar
systems applied.

Scalar means then quantities that are fully

described by a magnitude or numerical
value alone.

This is the earthquake hazard map in an

event of an earthquake in the Caraga region.

**Note: this is only a sample hazard map

Teacher on cam Are you taking notes? Did you understand

all that explanation?

Teacher on cam
This is an example of a community hazard
GFX pop up image map in case of a strong earthquake.

Have you ever seen one like this around

your locality?

Have you taken time out to read and

understand it?
It is also very important to familiarize
yourselves with your community hazard
map.

Being aware of what to do and where to go

helps in reducing disaster impacts.

**Note: this is only a sample map

Teacher on cam Here, let us listen to an expert explain the

community hazard map.
